Fever in cancer patients is often due to the following causes: evil qi and toxity stagnancy, disorders of qi and blood, deficiencies of zang and fu organs, and the disorder of yin and yang. The treatments given to cancer patients with a fever are according to five: (a) Excessive inner heat and toxicants: remove heat and the toxicant, induce purgation. We use Cheng-Qi-Tang plus Qing-Wen-Bai-Du-Yin. (b) Tangle of damp and heat, and qi stagnancy: remove damp and heat, smooth the qi channel. We use Gan-Lu-Xiao-Du-Dan or San-Ren-Tang. (c) Obvious blood and heat stagnancy: remove heat and blood stasis. We use Xue-Fu-Zhu-Yu-Tang. (d) Deficiency of spleen qi, inner heat caused by a yin deficiency: nourish spleen qi and yin to remove the inner heat. We use Bu-Zhong-Yi-Qi-Tang or Xiao-Jian-Zhong-Tang. (e) Prominent yin deficiency and hectic fever: replenish yin and remove inner heat. We use Qing-Hao-Bie-Jia-Tang or Chai-Qian-Mei-Lian-San. The pathogenesis of fever in cancer patients is complicated. We can see both deficiency and excess in one differentiation. Therefore, we must make sure of it, then we can get the most effective treatment.

Shoot branching (tillering) primarily determinesplant shoot architecture and has been studied in many plants. Shoot branching is an important trait in non-heading Chinesecabbage (Brassica rapa ssp. chinensis Makino). The B. rapassp. chinensis var. multiceps exhibits unique and multipleshoot branching characteristics. Here, we analyzed the variationin shoot branching between ‘Maertou,’ with multiple shootbranching, and ‘Suzhouqing,’ a common variety. The levelsof endogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), zeatin ribosideand active gibberellins in the shoot meristem tissues of thetwo cultivars were quantified by enzyme-linked immunosorbentassay during the vegetative growth stage. High levels of IAAmaintained axillary bud dormancy and repressed axillary budoutgrowth allowing shoot branching to form in the vegetativestage in ‘Suzhouqing.’ In contrast, low levels of IAA did notinhibit axillary buds in ‘Maertou,’ while a high level of cytokininpromoted axillary bud growth and branch shoot development. Exogenous hormone (rac-GR24 and 6-benzylaminopurine)treatment showed that ‘Maertou’ was relatively sensitive tocytokinin, because the fold changes of cytokinin-responsivegenes in ‘Maertou’ were significantly more frequent than thosein ‘Suzhouqing’. Cytokinin was the direct regulator for axillarybud growth of ‘Maertou’. Compared with ‘Suzhouqing’,‘Maertou’ was sensitive to cytokinin and this weakened thestrigolactone–cytokinin branching pathway.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase/extracellular signal-regulated kinase kinase kinase 3 (MEKK3) is an important protein kinase and a member of the MAPK family, which regulates cellular responses to environmental stress and serves as key integration points along the signal transduction cascade that not only link diverse extracellular stimuli to subsequent signaling molecules but also amplify the initiating signals to ultimately activate effector molecules and induce cell proliferation, differentiation and survival. To explore the relationship between MEKK3 and cell apoptosis, clinicopathology and prognosis, we characterize the expression of MEKK3 and survivin in cervical cancer. MEKK3 and survivin expression was measured by RT-PCR and Western blotting of fresh surgical resections from 30 cases of cervical cancer and 25 cases of chronic cervicitis. Protein expression was detected by tissue microarray and immunochemistry (En Vision) in 107 cases of cervical cancer, 86 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), and 35 cases of chronic cervicitis. Expression patterns were analyzed for their association with clinicopathological factors and prognosis in cervical cancer. Expression of MEKK3 and survivin mRNA was significantly higher in cervical cancer than in the controls (p<0.05). MEKK3 and survivin expression differed significantly between cervical carcinoma, CIN, and cervicitis (p<0.05) and correlated with clinical stage, infiltration depth, and lymph node metastasis (p<0.05). MEKK3 expression was positively correlated with survivin (p<0.05). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis showed that MEKK3 and survivin expression, lymph node metastasis, depth of invasion, and FIGO stage reduce cumulative survival. Cox multivariate regression analysis showed that MEKK3, survivin, and clinical staging are independent prognostic factors in cervical cancer (p<0.05). Expression of MEKK3 and survivin are significantly increased in cervical cancer, their overexpression participating in the occurrence and development of cervical cancer, with protein expression and clinical staging acting as independent prognostic factors for patients with cervical cancer.
Solubilities of Calcium and Zinc Lactate in Water and Water - Ethanol Mixture

The solubility of lactate salts, L(+) and DL( ±) forms of calcium and zinc lactate in water at temperature between 5 and 80℃, was measured and empirical equations were obtained by regression of solubility-temperature data. The equations can be used to calculate the solubility of calcium and zinc lactate at a given temperature. The change in solubility of L(+) and DL( ±) calcium and zinc lactate in water-ethanol mixture at 20℃ was also investigated. The solubilities of calcium and zinc lactate were lowered by the addition of ethanol to the solution.

The charge recombination caused by surface defects limits photovoltaic properties of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs), which can be suppressed by modifying organic or inorganic molecules and atomic ligands. In this paper, octa-aminopropyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (OA-POSS) connected and modified near-infrared absorption CdSeTe quantum dots (QDs) through coupling agent (1-ethyl-3-3-dimethylaminopropyl carbodiimide hydrochloride). The results suggest that OA-POSS reduces the surface defects of CdSeTe QDs and suppresses charge recombination. Therefore, the power conversion efficiency improves nearly 41%, which increases from 2.00% to 2.82%.
DNMT3a rs1550117 Polymorphism Association with Increased Risk of Helicobacter pylori Infection

Background: DNA methyltransferase-3a (DNMT3a) plays significant roles in embryogenesis and the generation of aberrant methylation in carcinogenesis. This study aimed to investigate associations between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the DNMT3a gene and risk of Helicobacter pylori infection, gastric atrophy and gastric cancer. Methods: The subjects comprised 447 patients with gastric cancer; 111 individuals with gastric atrophy and 961 healthy controls. Two SNPs (rs1550117 and rs13420827) of the DNMT3a gene were genotyped by Taqman assay. DNMT3a expression was analyzed in cancer tissues from 89 patients by tissue microarray technique. Odds ratio (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated by multivariate logistic regression. Results: Among healthy controls, risk of H.pylori infection was significantly higher in subjects with the rs1550117 AA genotype, compared to those with GG/AG genotypes of DNMT3a [OR=2.08, (95%CI: 1.02-4.32)]. However, no significant correlation was found between the two SNPs and risk of developing gastric atrophy or gastric cancer. In addition, no increase in DNMT3a expression was observed in the gastric cancer with H.pylori infection. Conclusions: This study revealed that DNMT3a rs1550117 polymorphism is significantly associated with an increased risk of H. pylori infection, but did not support any evidence for contributions of DNMT3a rs1550117 and rs13420827 to either gastric atrophy or gastric cancer. The biological roles of DNMT3a polymorphisms require further investigation.

A novel process for urokinase purification was studied using p-aminobenzamidine as the ligand and sepharose 4B as the matrix. The adsorption, washing, and elution conditions were optimized by an unusual method. An adsorption buffer containing 2.5 M NaCl and 1% Tween 80 facilitated the adsorption of urokinase on the affinity media and prevented contaminants from binding to the p-aminobenzamidine affinity gel. It was found that 5% Tween 80 removed most of the contaminants from the affinity column. A 0.2 M glycine elution buffer containing 0.5 M NaCl (pH 3.0) was found to have a strong elution ability with a high recovery and purity of urokinase. A crude urokinase material of 231 IU/mg protein from human urine was purified to 124,300 IU/mg protein with a purification factor of 538 and yield of 86.7%. As a result, a high purity urokinase was obtained with only a single affinity chromatography step. The purification process was successfully scaled-up to a 2-1 chromatography column. The resulting urokinase eluate could be directly lyophilized, thereby complying with Chinese pharmacopoeia (1995 version) standards.
