Although many imaging modalities can play some roles in the diagnosis of vertebral artery dissection (VAD), digital subtraction angiography (DSA) remains the gold standard method, with the highest detection rate and ability to assist in planning for endovascular treatment. However, this tool is often avoided in children because its invasive nature and it exposes them to radiation. High resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) have been suggested to be a reliable and non-invasive alternative, but it has never been discussed in children in whom vertebral artery dissection is a rare condition. In this report, we evaluate a case of a 2-year-old child who initially presented with cerebellar symptoms, and was early diagnosed with vertebral artery dissection using HR- MRI and was successfully treated.
Fabry disease: characterisation of the plasma proteome pre- and post-enzyme replacement therapy

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Fabry disease is characterised by the progressive accumulation of globotriaosylceramide (Gb3) and related glycosphingolipids in vascular endothelial cells. Enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) clears this accumulation. We analysed plasma proteome profiles before and after ERT to characterise its molecular pathology.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Two-dimensional electrophoresis and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight tandem mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) were done using plasma samples before and after ERT in eight patients with classical Fabry disease</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>After short-term ERT (4–12 months), the levels of 15 plasma proteins involved in inflammation, oxidative and ischaemic injury, or complement activation were reduced significantly. Among them, β-actin (ACTB), inactivated complement C3b (iC3b), and C4B were elevated significantly in pre-ERT Fabry disease plasma compared with control plasma. After longer-term ERT (46–96 months), iC3b levels gradually decreased, whereas the levels of other proteins varied. The gradual reduction of iC3b was comparable to that of Gb3 levels. In addition, iC3b increased significantly in pre-ERT Fabry disease mouse plasma, and C3 deposits were notable in renal tissues of pre-enzyme replacement therapy patients.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>These results indicated that C3-mediated complement activation might be altered in Fabry disease and ERT might promote its stabilisation.</P>

The occurrence of polytype domains in the central region decreases the yield of wafers, when large diameter 6H-, 4H-silicon carbide(SiC) single crystals are grown by a sublimation method. Accordingly, the suppression of polytype domains is very important. Previous studies revealed that polytype domains occur in SiC crystals during the growth process and the domains were based on the root of micropipes and macro-defects. However, in spite of many studies and much development, the suppression of polytype domains has not been perfectly solved. In this study, we verified the systematic experimental results that the relationship between ΔTB-U (vertical temperature gradient) and ΔTF-I (the temperature difference between initial temperature and final temperature at bottom of crucible) has an important effect on the occurrence of polytype domains. It was found that the optimization of ΔTF-I was more important than that of ΔTB-U in order to reduce the macro-defects and polytype domains. The facilitated transport of CO₂ through a hydrophilic polymeric membrane immobilized with K₂CO₃/KHCO₃, buffer solution has been investigated. The reactions of dissolved CO₂ in electrolyzed alkaline solution must consider hydration of CO₂ with water, chemical reaction of CO₂ with OH and dissociation of HCO₃ into CO₃. It is necessary to simplify these reactions as a simple model, which is used to analyze the transport system. From experiments in the liquid membrane with alkaline buffer solution, it is shown that the flux of CO₂into K₂CO₃/KHCO₃aqueous solution can be enhanced by the presence of CO₃². A diffusion model with an overall reaction based on the film theory is proposed that predicts the experimentally observed facilitation factor with reasonable accuracy. The present model is compared with the rigorous diffusion model involving the complicated conventional chemical reactions.
