<P>The number of patients with osteoporosis is increasing worldwide, and a decrease in bone mass is a main risk factor for fracture. The prevention of bone loss is critical for improving the quality of life for patients. However, the long-term use of antiosteoporotic agents is limited due to their side effects. Barley has been traditionally ingested for thousands of years as a safe, natural food with pharmaceutical properties, and its seedling can enhance the biological activity of the medicinal components found in food. This study aimed to clarify the antiresorptive activity of barley seedling and its mode of action. Barley seedling extracts (BSE) dose-dependently inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclast differentiation with alteration of I<I>κ</I>B degradation, c-Fos, and NFATc1 molecules in the early-to-middle stages of osteoclastogenesis. In the late phase of osteoclastogenesis, BSE also prevented DC-STAMP and cathepsin K, which are required for cell fusion and bone degradation, such as osteoclast function. In conclusion, barley seedling from natural foods may provide long-term safety and be useful for the prevention or treatment of osteoclast-mediated bone metabolic diseases, including osteoporosis.</P>

<P> Tetrahydroisoquinoline (THI) alkaloids can be considered as cyclized derivatives of simple phenylethylamines. Many of them, especially with 6,7-disubstitution, demonstrate a relatively high affinity for catecholamines. Present study examines the pharmacological action of limited series of THI, using rats isolated atria and aorta. In addition, a [<SUP>3</SUP>H] prazosin displacement binding study with THI compounds was performed, using rat brain homogenates to investigate whether these probes have -adrenoceptor affinity. We also compared the vascular relaxation potency of these probes with dobutamine. YS 49, YS 51, higenamine and dobutamine, concentration-dependently, relaxed endothelium-denuded rat thoracic aorta precontracted with phenylephrine (PE, 0.1 ㄍM) in which pEC<SUB>50</SUB> were 5.56⁑0.32 and 5.55⁑0.21, 5.99⁑1.16 and 5.57⁑0.34, respectively. These probes except higenamine also relaxed KCl (65.4 mM)-contracted aorta. In isolated rat atria, all THIs and dobutamine increased heart rate and contractile force. In the presence of propranolol, the concentration response curves of YS 49 and YS 51 shifted to the right and resulted in pA<SUB>2</SUB> values of 8.07⁑0.84 and 7.93⁑0.11, respectively. The slope of each compound was not deviated from unity, indicating that these chemicals are highly competitive at the cardiac -adrenoceptors. YS 49, YS 51, and higenamine showed -adrenoceptor affinity in rat brain, in which the dissociation constant (K<SUB>i</SUB>) was 2.75, 2.81, and 1.02 ㄍM, respectively. It is concluded, therefore, that THI alkaloids have weak affinity to <SUB>1</SUB>-adrenoceptors in rat aorta and brain, respectively, while these probes show relatively high affinity for cardiac -adrenoceptors. Thus, these chemicals may be useful in the treatment of congestive heart failure.

A non-instrumental immunochromatographic (ICG) strip-test and direct competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (DC-ELISA) for aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) determination were developed and optimized. The detection limits of ICG striptest and DC-ELISA were 0.5 and 0.004 ng/mL, respectively, and these methods possessed a cross-reaction to aflatoxins. The results of spiked samples by both methods were coincided with the amount spiked AFB1 and the comparative analyses of 172 real samples by 2 immunoassays and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) showed a good agreement. Especially, the ICG strip-test is easier to perform and quicker, but less sensitivity than DC-ELISA. Both methods could analyze a high sample throughput with short time, but the sample throughput of ICG strip-test was better. Therefore, the ICG strip-test can be used as a simple, easy, non-instrumental, and fast screening technique for AFB1 determination.

The purpose of this study was to compare the relative bioavailability of synthetic Vitamin C and Nutra-C<sup>®</sup> (calcium ascorbate) using a randomized parallel pharmacokinetics study design. Under fasting conditions, 20 healthy volunteers were randomly allocated to receive a single oral dose (500 mg of ascorbic acid) of either synthetic Vitamin C or Nutra-C<sup>®</sup>. Fasting blood was collected pre-dose and 1, 2, 3, 4, 7 and 10 hr post-dose. The ascorbic acid content of human serum was determined using HPLC with ultraviolet detection. The fasting serum ascorbic acid concentrations of synthetic Vitamin C and Nutra-C<sup>®</sup> were 6.734 ± 2.09 ng/mL (n = 10) and 7.542 ± 2.96 ng/mL (n = 10), respectively. The bioavailability of Nutra-C<sup>®</sup> was significantly greater (128 %, p < 0.05) than that of the synthetic Vitamin C.

The Taebaek Group (Cambrian-Ordovician) in theTaebaeksan Basin comprises mixed carbonate-siliciclastic sequenceand is exposed well in the Seokgaejae section located in the central-eastern part of the Korean Peninsula. The group in the Seokgaejaesection consists of in ascending order the Myeonsan, Myobong,and Duwibong formations. This study describes in detail the well-exposed outcrop sections of the Taebaek Group in the SeokgaejaePass in order to refine the lithostratigraphy of the lower Paleozoicstrata in the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea. The refined lithostratigra-phy delineates clearly the lithologic boundary between the Myobongand Daegi formations, the Hwajeol and Dongjeom formations, theDumugol and Makgol formations, and the Makgol and Jigunsanformations. The preliminary information on trilobite faunal asem-blages suggests that the Cambrian-Ordovician boundary can beplaced within the lowermost part of the Dongjeom Formation.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Appropriate immunosuppressive therapy for patients with idiopathic membranous nephropathy (MN) remains controversial. The effect of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) versus cyclosporine (CsA) combined with low-dose corticosteroids was evaluated in patients with idiopathic MN in a multi-center randomized trial (NCT01282073).</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>A total of 39 biopsy-proven idiopathic MN patients with severe proteinuria were randomly assigned to receive MMF combined with low-dose corticosteroids (MMF group) versus CsA combined with low-dose corticosteroids (CsA group), respectively, and followed up for 48 weeks. Complete or partial remission rate of proteinuria and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) at 48 weeks were compared.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The level of proteinuria at baseline and at 48 weeks was 8.9 ± 5.9 and 2.1 ± 3.1 g/day, respectively, in the MMF group compared to 8.4 ± 3.5 and 3.2 ± 5.7 g/day, respectively, in the CsA group. In total, 76.1% of the MMF group and 66.7% of the CsA group achieved remission at 48 weeks (95% confidence interval, −0.18 to 0.38). There was no difference in eGFR between the two groups. Anti-phospholipase A2 receptor Ab levels at baseline decreased at 48 weeks in the complete or partial remission group (<I>P</I> = 0.001), but were unchanged in the no-response group. There were no significant differences between the two groups in changes in the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale and Gastrointestinal Quality of Life Index scores from baseline to 48 weeks.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>In combination with low-dose corticosteroids, the effect of MMF may not be inferior to that of CsA in patients with idiopathic MN, with similar adverse effects including gastrointestinal symptoms.</P><P><B>Trial Registration</B></P><P>ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01282073</P>

Optimal culture conditions for efficient in vitro propagation and polysaccharide production of Orostachys japonicus were established. O. japonicus was cultured in media containing various growth regulators and carbon sources. The highest regeneration rate was achieved in 1.0 and 3.0 mg l -1 of 2,4-D concentration, while the lowest was obtained in 10.0 mg l -1 2,4-D concentration. When different carbone sources were added in the culture medium, plant growth was high in 3% sucrose treatment. The micropropagated shoots were successfully acclimatized in artificial soils and produced comparable amont of polysaccharide compred to parent cultivated plants.
