Linoleic-acid (LA) is covalently conjugated to carboxymethyl-chitosan via a 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethylaminopropyyl)-carbodiimide-med-iated (EDC-mediated) reaction to generate self-aggregated chitosan nanoparticles by sonication. The average diameter of the particles isloading experiments indicate that the loading capacity and eciency increase with increasing concentration of ADR. ADR is slowlyreleased from chitosan self-aggregates for about 3 days. Furthermore, the eects of drug controlled release become more obvious onincreasing the pH value.

<P>The radiated horizontal electromagnetic field of a lightning channel acts as the excitation when the lightning-induced voltages on overhead lines are under study. To accelerate the calculation of the horizontal electric field of a lightning channel, a piecewise Hermite interpolation model is proposed, which exploits the distinct feature of the transmission line whose height keeps unchanged. In the piecewise Hermite interpolation model, the key technique is fast evaluating the derivative of the horizontal electric field expressed by the generalized Sommerfeld integral. In this paper, the moment technique is utilized to calculate the derivatives efficiently. As demonstrated in the numerical examples, the piecewise Hermite interpolation model can reach a high accuracy with a very low computation cost.</P>

Maca has been consumed as a medical food in Peru for thousands of years, and exerts anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. Our present study aimed to evaluate the behavior and anatomical and biochemical effects of petroleum ether extract from maca (ME) in the chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model of depression in mice. Three different doses of maca extract (125, 250, and 500 mg/kg) were orally administrated in the six-week CUMS procedure. Fluoxetine (10 mg/kg) was used as a positive control drug. Maca extract (250 and 500 mg/kg) significantly decreased the duration of immobility time in the tail suspension test. After treatment with maca extract (250 and 500 mg/kg), the granule cell layer in the dentate gyrus appeared thicker. Maca extract (250 and 500 mg/kg) also induced a significant reduction in corticosterone levels in mouse serum. In mouse brain tissue, after six weeks of treatment, noradrenaline and dopamine levels were increased by maca extract, and the activity of reactive oxygen species was significantly inhibited. Serotonin levels were not significantly altered. These results demonstrated that maca extract (250 and 500 mg/kg) showed antidepressant-like effects and was related to the activation of both noradrenergic and dopaminergic systems, as well as attenuation of oxidative stress in mouse brain.

<P>Very few of the z > 5 quasars discovered to date have been radio-loud, with radio-to-optical flux ratios (radio-loudness parameters) higher than 10. Here we report the discovery of an optically luminous radio-loud quasar, SDSS J013127.34-032100.1 (J0131-0321 in short), at z = 5.18 +/- 0.01 using the Lijiang 2.4 m and Magellan telescopes. J0131-0321 has a spectral energy distribution consistent with that of radio-loud quasars. With an i-band magnitude of 18.47 and a radio flux density of 33 mJy, its radio-loudness parameter is similar to 100. The optical and near-infrared spectra taken by Magellan enable us to estimate its bolometric luminosity to be L-bol similar to 1.1 x 10(48) erg s(-1), approximately 4.5 times greater than that of the most distant quasar known to date. The black hole mass of J0131-0321 is estimated to be 2.7 x 10(9) M-circle dot, with an uncertainty up to 0.4 dex. Detailed physical properties of this high-redshift, radio-loud, potentially super-Eddington quasar can be probed in the future with more dedicated and intensive follow-up observations using multi-wavelength facilities.</P>
