The summer fruit tortrix moth Adoxophyes orana is a seriously damaged leaf roller pest for fruit trees. In this study, we evaluated the effect of five host plants (apple, Malus domestica B.; peach, Prunus persica var. nectarina; apricot, Armeniaca vulgaris Lam.; mulberry, Morus alba L.; and jujube, Ziziphus jujuba M.) on the development, survival, and fecundity of A. orana under laboratory conditions. Results showed that the development times of A. orana on jujube were significantly longer than those on the other four plants. The preimaginal survival rate was influenced by the host plants, which were fed during the larval stage, and with the highest on peach, followed by apple, apricot, and mulberry, and with the lowest on jujube. Adult females from larvae reared on apricot laid the greatest numbers of eggs (318.11 eggs per female), while that on apple, jujube, and mulberry was smaller, and no significant difference was observed among them. The highest intrinsic rate of increase (rm) was observed on peach and apricot; these two fruit trees were considered to be the most suitable host plant for A. orana because of the shorter developmental duration, higher survival rate, and the highest fecundity.

Hereditary non-polyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC) is an autosomal dominant inheritance syndrome. HNPCC is the most common hereditary variant of colorectal cancer (CRC), which accounts for 2-5% CRCs, mainly due to hMLH1 and hMSH2 mutations that impair DNA repair functions. Our study aimed to identify the patterns of hMSH2 and hMLH1 mutations in Chinese HNPCC patients. Ninety-eight unrelated families from China meeting Amsterdam or Bethesda criteria were included in our study. Germline mutations in MLH1 and MSH2 genes, located in the exons and the splice-site junctions, were screened in the 98 probands by direct sequencing. Eleven mutations were found in ten patients (11%), with six in MLH1 (54.5%) and five in MSH2 (45.5%) genes. One patient had mutations in both MLH1 and MSH2 genes. Three novel mutations in MLH1 gene (c.157_160delGAGG, c.2157dupT and c.-64G>T) were found for the first time, and one suspected hotspot in MSH2 (c.1168C>T) was revealed. Bioprospecting of Endophytic Fungi as Promising Anti-MRSA Agents
Wei, Yee-Min,Tan, Joo-Shun,Tang, Hock-Wei,Tong, Woei-Yenn,Leong, Chean-Ring,Tan, Wen-Nee The Korean Society of Pharmacognosy 2022 Natural Product Sciences Vol.28 No.3
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a serious threat to the global healthcare system. Ineffective and resistance to antibiotic treatments have increased morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. New and effective antibiotics are needed to combat against bacterial resistance. Endophytic fungi are crucial reservoirs of novel bioactive metabolites. In particular, the secondary metabolites show promising therapeutic potential, notably, antibacterial. This review discussed the emerging potential of endophytic fungi as anti-MRSA agents. The ecological sources of endophytic fungi were discussed with the synthesis of bioactive metabolites. The mode of antibacterial actions was elucidated to give a better understanding of the mechanisms involved. This review may serve as an important reference for future discovery and developments of anti-MRSA agents from endophytic fungi.

Background: The current study examined health-related quality of life (QoL) for patients with esophageal/gastric cardia precursor lesions or cancer before and after treatment to facilitate improved prevention and treatment. Materials and Methods: Patients with different stages of esophageal/gastric cardia lesions completed two QoL questionnaires, EORTC QLQ-C30 and supplemental QLQ-OES 18, before primary treatment, and at 1, 6 and 12 months after treatment. Results: Fifty-nine patients with precursor lesions, 57 with early stage cancer, and 43 with advanced cancer responded to our survey. Patients with precursor lesions or early stage cancer reported better QoL overall than those with advanced cancer before treatment (p<0.01). Global QoL scores before treatment and at 1 month after treatment were $71{\pm}9$ versus $69{\pm}9$ (p>0.01), $71{\pm}8$ versus $61{\pm}11$ (p<0.01), $67{\pm}11$ versus $62{\pm}9$ (p<0.01) for three stages of lesions. At 6 months after treatment, some QoL measures recovered gradually in precursor lesion and early cancer patients, while some continuously deteriorated in advanced cancer patients. At 12 months, all QoL scores were comparable to baseline for patients with precursor lesions (p>0.01), while global QoL, social, pain, and insomnia scores for early stage and advanced cancer were inferior to corresponding baseline levels (difference between means>5, p<0.01). At this time point, compared with patients with early stage cancer, those with advanced cancer showed worse QoL with all function and most symptom measures (p<0.01). Conclusions: Patients with precursor lesions or early stage esophageal/gastric cardia cancer show better QoL than those with advanced cancer. This indicates that screening, early diagnosis and treatment may improve the QoL for esophageal/gastric cardia cancer patients. Target intervention and counseling should be given by health care providers during treatment and follow-up to facilitate QoL improvement.
Process and property characterization of La-Al-B-O/Al2O3 glass ceramic composites
Wen-Cheng J. Wei,Chih-Lung Chen,S.F. Wang 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2006 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.7 No.1
A LAB glass with a composition of 10 mol% La2O3 + 10 mol% Al2O3 + 80% B2O3 made into a composite with 30-50% Al2O3 filler was prepared and investigated. Processing optimization and several engineering properties used for microwave substrates are reported, including densification, interaction with Ag electrodes, dielectric properties as a function of frequency, acid dissolution and microstructure. The glass ceramic composite, i.e. L30A, without lead and alkali, can be densified by two-step sintering to a density better than 99% with minimal glass residue. The densified composite does not react with Ag up to 950 oC in 1 h, and does not dissolve in an acid solution (pH=3.5) in 2 h. The dielectric constant and loss are in the range of 5.6-5.9 and 1.4 × 10−3-5.5 × 10−3, respectively. The coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and thermal conductivity of the composite are reported.

In this experiment, we selected "Tangshan bone china" 10.5-inch white porcelain flat plate produced by five differententerprises as experimental samples to study the erosion of bone porcelain enamel by different kinds of acidic reagents atdifferent temperatures. The specific experimental process was as follows: at different temperatures, 20% hydrochloric acid,30% sulfuric acid, 100 g/L citric acid and 10% acetic acid were used to continuously erode the sample glaze for 10h, and thewhiteness and 45º mirror direction gloss were measured every 2h. The results show that different acidic reagents at differenttemperatures have significant differences in the erosion characteristics and strength of bone porcelain glaze, and the corrosionresistance of products from different enterprises also have significant differences.
Study of processing adsorption mechanism of amphoteric polyelectrolyte in BaTiO3 colloids suspension
Wen-Cheng J. Wei,Bang-Ying Yu,Kung-Chung Hsu 한양대학교 세라믹연구소 2004 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.5 No.2
An amphoteric dispersant, copolymer (α-N,N-dimethyl-N-acryloyloxyethyl) ammonium ethanateacrylamide (PAAM/DAAE), was used for the dispersion of BaTiO3 (BT) colloids in an aqueous solution, and compared to a commercial acrylic- based polymeric dispersant, ammonium salt of polymethylacrylic acid (PMAA-NH4). Several properties, including surface potential, sedimentation height ratio, green density, and Ba2+ dissolution from the particle surface were studied. Due to the branch structure of PAAM/DAAE and more importantly the amphoteric functional groups of PAAM/DAAE, the macromolecules adsorbed on BT in much higher concentration (up to 7 mg/g) and limited the dissolution of Ba2+ ions from the BT surface. Strong steric repulsion between BT particles with PAAM/DAAE resulted in a good dispersion of fine particles and greater packing density in the green state than that of PMAA-NH4. The adsorption mechanism and interactions among BT, dispersants, and H2O are reported.

A continuous conversion process of rice starch hydrolysate to 2-keto-D-gluconic acid (2KGA) by Arthrobacter globiformis C224 was developed. Its feasibility for industrial application was also evaluated. Results showed that the initial cell concentration exceeding 1.25 g/L met the continuous 2KGA production at a stable dilution rate and media composition, while the dilution rate and feeding glucose concentration had a significant effect on 2KGA production performance. The optimal operating parameters were obtained as: 0.090/h of dilution rate and 171.0 g/L of feeding glucose concentration. Under these conditions, the steady state had a produced 2KGA concentration of 124.74 g/L, average volumetric productivity of 11.23 g/L/h,and yield of 0.97 g/g. In conclusion, continuous 2KGA production by the A. globiformis C224 strain would be a superior industrial process for the production of 2KGA in terms of its high 2KGA productivity and yield.
