        A new method solving the temperature field of concrete around cooling pipes

        When using the conventional finite element method, a great number of grid nodes are necessary to describe the large and uneven temperature gradients in the concrete around cooling pipes when calculating the temperature field of mass concrete with cooling pipes. In this paper, the temperature gradient properties of the concrete around a pipe were studied. A new calculation method was developed based on these properties and an explicit iterative algorithm. With a small number of grid nodes, both the temperature distribution along the cooling pipe and the temperature field of the concrete around the water pipe can be correctly calculated with this new method. In conventional computing models, the cooling pipes are regarded as the third boundary condition when solving a model of concrete with plastic pipes, which is an approximate way. At the same time, the corresponding parameters have to be got by expensive experiments and inversion. But in the proposed method, the boundary condition is described strictly, and thus is more reliable and economical. And numerical examples were used to illustrate that this method is accurate, efficient and applicable to the actual engineering.

        An improvement on the concrete exothermic models considering self-temperature duration

        Based on the Arrhenius equations, several hydration exothermic models that precisely calculate the influence of concrete’s self-temperature duration on its hydration exothermic rate have been presented. However, the models’ convergence is difficult to achieve when applied to engineering projects, especially when the activation energy of the Arrhenius equation is precisely considered. Thus, the models’ convergence performance should be improved. To solve this problem and apply the model to engineering projects, the relationship between fast iteration and proper expression forms of the adiabatic temperature rise, the coupling relationship between the pipe-cooling and hydration exothermic models, and the influence of concrete’s self-temperature duration on its mechanical properties were studied. Based on these results, the rapid convergence of the hydration exothermic model and its coupling with pipe-cooling models were achieved. The calculation results for a particular engineering project show that the improved concrete hydration exothermic model and the corresponding mechanical model can be suitably applied to engineering projects.

        Sensory, Physicochemical and Microbiological Changes in Water-cooked Salted Duck during Storage at 4℃

        Water-cooked salted ducks were tray-packaged and stored under refrigeration ($4{\pm}1^{\circ}C$) in order to evaluate the quality changes during storage. pH, total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), sensory and microbiological analysis were determined at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10 days of storage. pH value and TVB-N (mg N/100 g) varied from $6.47{\pm}0.16$ to $6.69{\pm}0.10$ and from $5.90{\pm}0.93$ to $13.42{\pm}2.46$, respectively. Sensory results indicated that ducks were unacceptable at the 10th day of storage. The predominant spoilage bacteria at the end of the shelf-life were Brochothrix thermosphacta, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and minor components were Enterobacteriaceae, members of Micrococci, yeasts and moulds. Pseudomonads were also detected. Both total bacteria and the various spoilage ones, overall, increased from the initial sampling to the final day.

      • A stable and highly efficient visible-light-driven hydrogen evolution porous CdS/WO<sub>3</sub>/TiO<sub>2</sub> photocatalysts

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>It is well known that both catalytic efficiency and stability are the two important parameters of photocatalysts for visible-light-driven hydrogen production reactions. However, light-driven hydrogen evolution based applications still suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics due to the lack of high-performance photocatalysts. In this paper, we successfully synthesized a ternary porous CdS/WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> photocatalyst with high efficiency and stability via two-stage approach. The as-prepared samples are characterized by XRD, FESEM, EDS, TEM, XPS, and UV–Vis, respectively, which illustrated that the CdS and WO<SUB>3</SUB> moieties are in-situ formed inside the porous TiO<SUB>2</SUB>. Particularly, the photocatalytic hydrogen (H<SUB>2</SUB>) evolution rate of such ternary 8% CdS/WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> (molar ration of CdS:WO<SUB>3</SUB>:TiO<SUB>2</SUB> = 8:8:100) photocatalyst ranges up to 2106 μmol h<SUP>−1</SUP> g<SUP>−1</SUP> under visible-light irradiation, which is higher than that of pure TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and other binary (CdS/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> and WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB>) porous photocatalysts. The superior H<SUB>2</SUB> evolution efficiency can be attributed to the coexistence of CdS and WO<SUB>3</SUB> in porous TiO<SUB>2</SUB> which can promote the interfacial charge transfer and separation as well as extend the light absorption up to the visible range.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Highly efficient and stable photocatalytic activity of CdS/WO<SUB>3</SUB>/TiO<SUB>2</SUB> photocatalysts were synthesized by a two-step method. </LI> <LI> CdS and WO<SUB>3</SUB> inlaid on porous TiO<SUB>2</SUB> can extend the light absorption and enhance photogenerated electron-hole pairs separation. </LI> <LI> The porous structure can provide more reaction active sites and improve photoproduced-electrons and holes transport speed. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical Abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Differential expression of heat shock protein 90, 70, 60 in chicken muscles postmortem and its relationship with meat quality

        Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of heat shock protein (HSP) 90, 70, and 60 in chicken muscles and their possible relationship with quality traits of meat. Methods: The breast muscles from one hundred broiler chickens were analyzed for drip loss and other quality parameters, and the levels of heat shock protein (HSP) 90, 70, and 60 were determined by immunoblots. Results: Based on the data, chicken breast muscles were segregated into low (drip loss${\leq}5%$), intermediate (5%<drip loss<9.5%) and high (drip loss${\geq}9.5$) drip loss groups. The expression of HSP90 and HSP60 were significantly lower in the high drip loss group compared to that in the low and intermediate drip loss group (p<0.05), while HSP70 was equivalent in abundance in all groups (p>0.05). Conclusion: Results of this study suggests that higher levels of HSP90 and HSP60 may be advantageous for maintenance of cell function and reduction of water loss, and they could act as potential indicator for better water holding capacity of meat.

        Genome-wide identification of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) family members in eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) and their expression in response to low temperature

        Browning of fresh-cut eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) reduces its sensory and nutritional qualities and further influences consumption. Polyphenolic oxidases (PPOs) are key enzymes involved in browning, but the mechanisms that regulate the expression of PPO genes are still unclear. Here, 12 SmPPO genes were identified and phylogenetic analysis clustered these genes into four branches. Protein and cis-regulatory element analyses showed that the SmPPO gene family has a conserved gene structure and diverse functions. Gene expression analysis in different tissues showed that the expression of SmPPO2, SmPPO3, SmPPO6, SmPPO7, and SmPPO10 was higher in the flesh of the browning-sensitive inbred line ‘36’ than in the flesh of the browning-resistant line ‘Fu’. Furthermore, almost all SmPPO genes in ‘36’ were upregulated at 4 °C and 36 °C compared with those in ‘Fu’, and the expression increased earlier after harvest. In addition, SmPPO1, SmPPO6, SmPPO7, and SmPPO10 expression was significantly elevated in ‘36’ after 2 days at 36 °C. These results suggest that SmPPOs are key modulators of eggplant browning and provide candidate genes for further research on the mechanisms regulating fruit browning.

      • Computerized bone age estimation system based on China-05 standard

        The purpose of this study is to develop an automatic software system for bone age evaluation and to evaluate its accuracy in testing and feasibility in clinical practice. 20394 left-hand radiographs of healthy children (2-18 years old) were collected from China Skeletal Development Survey data of 1998 and China Skeletal Development Survey data of 2005. Three experienced radiologists and China-05 standard maker jointly evaluate the stages of bone development and the reference bone age was determined by consensus. 1020 from 20394 radiographs were picked randomly as test set and the remaining 19374 radiographs as training set and validation set. Accuracy of the automatic software system for bone age assessment is evaluated in test set and two clinical test sets. Compared with the reference standard, the automatic software system based on RUS-CHN for bone age assessment has a 0.04 years old mean difference, ±0.40 years old in 95% confidence interval by single reading, a 85.6% percentage agreement of ratings, a 93.7% bone age accuracy rate, 0.17 years old of MAD, 0.29 years old of RMS; Compared with the reference standard, the automatic software system based on TW3-C RUS has a 0.04 years old mean difference, a ±0.38 years old in 95% confidence interval by single reading, a 90.9% percentage agreement of ratings, a 93.2% bone age accuracy rate, a 0.16 years of MAD, and a 0.28 years of RMS. Automatic software system, AI-China-05 showed reliably accuracy in bone age estimation and steady determination in different clinical test sets.
