Evaluation of pilot’s workload during flight is a significant consideration for the safety of civil aviation. However, some errors may be brought in the measurement and the recording of objective parameters. Based on a multidimensional workload evaluation, the time delay of cardiac activity and its impacts on workload are analyzed. The results suggest that within a certain limit of error around 10s, varying from individual to individual, workload can keep the main information compared to the original workload. As the error increases, the workload may become unreliable. As a consequence, the time-delay error of cardiac activity should be controlled in a limited scale to ensure the validity and reliability of workload.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive management strategy that has been widely applied for benign and recurrent malignant thyroid lesions as an alternative to surgery in Taiwan. Members of academic societies for specialists in interventional radiology, endocrinology, and endocrine surgery collaborated to develop the first consensus regarding thyroid RFA in Taiwan. The modified Delphi method was used to reach a consensus. Based on a comprehensive review of recent and valuable literature and expert opinions, the recommendations included indications, pre-procedural evaluations, procedural techniques, post-procedural monitoring, efficacy, and safety, providing a comprehensive review of the application of RFA. The consensus effectively consolidates advice regarding thyroid RFA in clinical practice for local experts.

Sparse principal component analysis (SPCA) imposes extra constraints or penalty terms to the standard PCA to achieve sparsity. In this paper, we introduce an efficient algorithm for finding an effective sparse feature principal component (PC) of multiple physiological signals. The algorithm consists of two stages. In the first stage, it identifies an active index set with a desired cardinality corresponding to the nonzero entries of the PC. In the second one, it uses the power iteration method to find the best direction with respect to the active index set. Experiments on randomly generated data and multiple physiological signals datasets show that our algorithm is very fast, especially on large and sparse data sets, while the numerical quality of the solution is comparable to the state-of-art algorithm.

<P>At present, there are various limitations to harvesting ambient waste heat which include the lack of economically viable material and innovative design features that can efficiently recover low grade heat for useful energy conversion. In this work, a thermal nanophotonic-pyroelectric (TNPh-pyro) scheme consisting of a metamaterial multilayer and pyroelectric material, which performs synergistic waste heat rejection and photothermal heat-to-electricity conversion, is presented. Unlike any other pyroelectric configuration, this conceptual design deviates from the conventional by deliberately employing back-reflecting NIR to enable waste heat reutilization/recuperation to enhance pyroelectric generation, avoiding excessive solar heat uptake and also retaining high visual transparency of the device. Passive solar reflective cooling up to 4.1 degrees C is demonstrated. Meanwhile, the photothermal pyroelectric performance capitalizing on the back-reflecting effect shows an open circuit voltage (V-oc) and short circuit current (I-sc) enhancement of 152 and 146%, respectively. In addition, the designed photoactive component (TiO2/Cu) within the metamaterial multilayer provides the TNPh-pyro system with an effective air pollutant photodegradation functionality. Finally, proof-of-concept for concurrent photothermal management and enhanced solar pyroelectric generation under a real outdoor environment is demonstrated.</P>
