      • Pulping and Environment Friendly Bleaching of Whole Jute

        Whole jute, also known as Corchorus Capsularies, is grown in many parts of the world particularly in eastern and central India and Bangladesh. Although it is a non-wood material but its fibers are long, which results in considerably high tear and tensile strength of paper made out of it. The pulp after bleaching is stronger, brighter and more resistant to yellowing. In this study optimum process conditions for whole jute pulping and ECF bleaching have been investigated. Thoroughly washed and air dried whole jute plant was cut into small pieces and subjected to soda / soda-Aq pulping process. The process which resulted in lower Kappa no. was selected. After this, amount of Soda dose was optimized. Again the soda dose which gave good yield along with low Kappa no. was chosen. After optimizing the soda dose, the pulp was subjected to oxygen delignification. The oxygen delignified pulp was bleached by various ECF sequences namely ODED, ODEP, ODEPD. CEHH and DEPD bleaching sequences were also performed prior to oxygen delignification for comparison. The combined effluent after each stage of bleaching was collected. BOD5 and COD for each sequence were calculated. Hand sheets were prepared in British sheet former under standard pressing and drying conditions and optical and physical strength properties of all the bleached pulps were evaluated and a comparison has been made. Among the sequences studied, the ODED, ODEP, ODEPD were found to give brightness above 86% ISO. The CEHH and DEPD sequences almost reached 80% brightness at the cost of reduction in strength properties and higher pollution load. The ODEPD bleaching sequence ( Brightness 88.4% ISO), which improves strength properties substantially and generates much less pollution load both in terms of COD and TOCl, is quite promising for whole jute pulp for the production of writing and printing grade paper.

        Efficient Provisioning for Multicast Virtual Network under Single Regional Failure in Cloud-based Datacenters

        Network virtualization technology plays a key role in cloud computing, which serves as an effective approach for provisioning a flexible and highly adaptable shared substrate network to satisfy the demands of various applications or services. Recently, the problem of mapping a virtual network (VN) onto a substrate network has been addressed by various algorithms. However, these algorithms are typically efficient for unicast service-oriented virtual networks, and generally not applicable to multicast service-oriented virtual networks (MVNs). Furthermore, the survivable MVN mapping (SMVNM) problem that considers the survivability of MVN has not been studied and is also the focus of this work. In this research, we discuss SMVNM problem under regional failures in the substrate network and propose an efficient algorithm for solving this problem. We first propose a framework and formulate the SMVNM problem with the objective of minimizing mapping cost by using mixed integer linear programming. Then we design an efficient heuristic to solve this problem and introduce several optimizations to achieve the better mapping solutions. We validate and evaluate our framework and algorithms by conducting extensive simulations on different realistic networks under various scenarios, and by comparing with existing approaches. Our simulation experiments and results show that our approach outperforms existing solutions.

        Is Teriparatide Superior in Treating Osteoporotic Vertebral Compression Fractures in Comparison to Bisphosphonates Treatment Alone: A 2-Year Retrospective Analysis

        Study Design: Retrospective cohort study.Purpose: This study aimed to compare the efficacy of bisphosphonates and teriparatide in the management of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures with regard to pain management, prevention of nonunion, and radiological as well as clinical outcomes.Overview of Literature: Osteoporosis refers to a skeletal disorder characterized by decreased bone strength caused by poor bone density and quality causing fragility, resulting in long periods of pain-related immobilization.Methods: In a 24-month follow-up retrospective study, 191 patients with osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures were randomly assigned to the bisphosphonate group (n=104) or the teriparatide group (n=87), with patients opting for their treatment between January 2016 and October 2020. Demographic data and patient-reported outcomes scores, including the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), union rates, and kyphosis progression, were assessed at baseline, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years after treatment.Results: Both groups had a significant decrease in VAS, from 8.38±0.74 to 3.15±1.40 in the bisphosphonate group and from 8.49±0.73 to 1.11±0.31 in the teriparatide group. The ODI scores reduced significantly at 2-year follow-ups, recording 25.02±13.94 and 15.11±2.17 in the bisphosphonate and teriparatide groups, respectively. Risks of nonunion development were slightly higher at 11.53% in the bisphosphonate group and 8.63% in the teriparatide group required operative intervention. The kyphosis progression angles were also significantly lower in the teriparatide group (4.97°±0.78°) than in the bisphosphonate group (8.09°±1.25°).Conclusions: Over time, numerous studies have demonstrated the efficacy of bisphosphonates and teriparatide in ameliorating pain. In this study, the efficacy of teriparatide surpassed that of bisphosphonates in certain aspects, such as the initial 6-month union rates and reduction in the progression of segmental kyphosis. However, bisphosphonates and teriparatide yield similar and favorable union rates at 1 year and final follow-up.

        Superior Vena Cava Syndrome Associated with Right-to-Left Shunt through Systemic-to-Pulmonary Venous Collaterals

        Superior vena cava (SVC) obstruction is associated with the gradual development of venous collaterals. We present a rare form of systemic-to-pulmonary subpleural collateral pathway that developed in the bridging subpleural pulmonary veins in a 54-year-old woman with complete SVC obstruction. This uncommon collateral pathway represents a rare form of acquired right-to-left shunt due to previous pleural adhesions with an increased risk of stroke due to right-to-left venous shunting, which requires lifelong anticoagulation.
