• Early Intervention: Role of Families and Community

Krishna Vatsa BK21 Project Force of Special Education Deagu Univ 2001 Journal of Asia-Pacific Special Education Vol.1 No.3

There is a growing realisation about childhood disabilities and its impact on family, community and the government. Therefore, the need for prevention of disabilities and early intervention, services is as pressing as it has ever been But in India not much is being done about providing these services. The majority of population living in areas of poverty are still not very conscious of the problem and continue to remain under the influence of traditional beliefs and practices. The lack of services within accessible distance coupled with the lack of awareness and sensitivity to the problems faced by persons with disabilities, their families and the community further aggravate the situation. Therefore, there is a need for expansion of outreach services through early intervention by involving the families and the community. This paper describes the work of a non-governmental organisation in India. SAMADHAN, which caters to families living in areas of low income with infants and children who are mentally handicapped or at risk of becoming developmentally delayed if early intervention services are not easily available. The paper also describes the early intervention model of service delivery through community based rehabilitation approach with the active and positive involvement of families and community.

Generation of multiply charged atomic ions of halogens using second harmonic of nanosecond Nd:YAG laser

        P. Sharma,R.K. Vatsa 한국물리학회 2009 Current Applied Physics Vol.9 No.1

Using the second harmonic output (532 nm) of a commercially available pulsed Nd:YAG laser interacting with pure and mixed clusters of iodo compounds, multiply charged ions of halogen group (F, Cl, Br and I) atoms have been generated based on the phenomenon of low intensity Coulomb explosion. This method provides a useful rugged tool for generation of multiply charged ions which can then be used for various applications. The effect of boiling point (vapour pressure) of the compound forming clusters has been correlated with the highest charged state of ion observed in time of flight mass spectrometer. Monocrotophos Induces the Expression of Xenobiotic Metabolizing Cytochrome P450s (CYP2C8 and CYP3A4) and Neurotoxicity in Human Brain Cells

        Tripathi, V. K.,Kumar, V.,Pandey, A.,Vatsa, P.,Dhasmana, A.,Singh, R. P.,Appikonda, S. H.,Hwang, I.,Lohani, M. Humana Press 2017 Molecular Neurobiology Vol. No.

Expression of various cytochrome P450s (CYPs) in mammalian brain cells is well documented. However, such studies are hampered in neural/glial cells of human origin due to nonavailability of human brain cells. To address this issue, we investigated the expression and inducibility of CYP2C8 and CYP3A4 and their responsiveness against cyclophosphamide (CPA) and organophosphorus pesticide monocrotophos (MCP), a known developmental neurotoxicant in human neural (SH-SY5Y) and glial (U373-MG) cell lines. CPA induced significant expression of CYP2C8 and CYP3A4 in both types of cells in a time-dependent manner. Neural cell line exhibited relatively higher constitutive and inducible expression of CYPs than the glial cell line. MCP exposure alone could not induce the significant expression of CYPs, whereas the cells preexposed to CPA showed a significant response to MCP. Similar to the case of CPA induced expressions, neural cells were found to be more vulnerable than glial cells. Our data indicate differential expressions of CYPs in cultured human neural and glial cell lines. The findings were synchronized with protein ligand docking studies, which showed a significant modulatory capacity of MCP by strong interaction with CYP regulators-CAR and PXR. Similarly, the known CYP inducer CPA has also shown significant high docking scores with the two studied CYP regulators. We also observed a significant induction in reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxides (LPO), micronucleus (MN), chromosomal aberration (CA), and reduction in reduced glutathione (GSH) and catalase following the exposure of MCP. Moreover, the expressions of apoptotic markers such as caspase-3, caspase-9, Bax, and p53 were significantly upregulated, whereas the levels of antiapoptotic marker, Bcl2, was downregulated after the exposure of MCP in both cell lines. These findings confirm the involvement of ROS-mediated oxidative stress, which subsequently triggers apoptosis pathways in both human neural (SH-SY5Y) and glial (U373-MG) cell lines following the exposure of MCP.

Fetomaternal outcomes in pregnant women with congenital heart disease: a comparative analysis from an apex institute

        Soniya Dhiman,Aparna Sharma,Akanksha Gupta,Richa Vatsa,Juhi Bharti,Vidushi Kulshrestha,Satyavir Yadav,Vatsla Dadhwal,Neena Malhotra 대한산부인과학회 2024 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.67 No.2

Objective With advancements in cardiac surgical interventions during infancy and childhood, the incidence of maternal congenital heart disease (CHD) is increasing. This retrospective study compared fetal and cardiac outcomes in women with and without CHD, along with a sub-analysis between cyanotic versus non-cyanotic defects and operated versus non-operated cases. Methods A 10-year data were retrospectively collected from pregnant women with CHD and a 1:1 ratio of pregnant women without any heart disease. Adverse fetal and cardiac outcomes were noted in both groups. Statistical significance was set at P<0.05.Results A total of 86 pregnant women with CHD were studied, with atrial septal defects (29.06%) being the most common. Out of 86 participants, 27 (31.39%) had cyanotic CHD. Around 55% of cases were already operated on for their cardiac defects. Among cardiovascular complications, 5.8% suffered from heart failure, 7.0% had pulmonary arterial hypertension, 8.1% presented in New York Heart Association functional class IV, 9.3% had a need for intensive care unit admission, and one experienced maternal mortality. Adverse fetal outcomes, including operative vaginal delivery, mean duration of hospital stay, fetal growth restriction, preterm birth (<37 weeks), low birth weight (<2,500 g), 5-minute APGAR score <7, and neonatal intensive care unit admissions, were significantly higher in women with CHD than in women without heart disease. Conclusion Women with CHD have a higher risk of adverse fetal and cardiac outcomes. The outcome can be improved with proper pre-conceptional optimization of the cardiac condition, good antenatal care, and multidisciplinary team management.
