Dietary antioxidants are often defined by in vitro measures of antioxidant activity. Such measures are valid in-dicators of the antioxidant potential, but provide little evidence of activity as a dietary antioxidant. This study was undertakento assess the in vivoantioxidant efficacy of a berry fruit extract by measuring biomarkers of oxidative damage to protein (car-bonyls), lipids (malondialdehyde), and DNA (8-oxo-2.-deoxyguanosine urinary excretion) and plasma antioxidant status (an-tioxidant capacity, vitamin E) in rats when fed basal diets containing fish and soybean oils, which are likely to generate dif-ferent levels of oxidative stress. Boysenberry (Rubus loganbaccus. baileyanus Britt) extract was used as the dietaryantioxidant. The basal diets (chow, synthetic/soybean oil, or synthetic/fish oil) had significant effects on the biomarkers ofoxidative damage and antioxidant status, with rats fed the synthetic/fish oil diet having the lowest levels of oxidative damageand the highest antioxidant status. When boysenberry extract was added to the diet, there was little change in 8-oxo-2.-de-oxyguanosine excretion in urine, oxidative damage to proteins decreased, and plasma malondialdehyde either increased or de-creased depending on the basal diet. This study showed that boysenberry extract functioned as an in vivo antioxidant andraised the antioxidant status of plasma while decreasing some biomarkers of oxidative damage, but the effect was highly mod-ified by basal diet. Our results are further evidence of complex interactions among dietary antioxidants, background nutri-tional status as determined by diet, and the biochemical nature of the compartments in which antioxidants function.
Sterilization, Capital Mobility and Interest Rate Determination for East Asia
( Tony Cavoli ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소 (구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2007 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.22 No.1
This paper uses a simple open economy interest rate determination model to empirically examine an important aspect of pre-crisis monetary and exchange rate policy. It investigates whether sterilization of the reserve effects of capital inflows helped keep interest rates sufficiently high that they may have prolonged the inflow of capital. Despite the use of a pre-crisis sample in this study, the issues in this paper have relevance today given the recent trend in foreign capital inflow for Asia. The empirical section is concerned with the effect of reserve flows on the interest rate and is divided into two parts. The first tests for a contemporaneous effect of the basic model using OLS and IV methods. The second generalizes the model to assess for lagged effects by way of VAR analysis. The results show that there are some contemporaneous effects of sterilization on the domestic interest rate though the effects are stronger when estimating the lagged model.
Design analysis of a bubble pump on diffusion absorption refrigeration system

An analytical study of a bubble pump has been done in this research with theoretical approach to investigate the performance of the bubble pump. The bubble pump was used in the absorption refrigeration system with ammonia-water-hydrogen as the working fluid. Bubble pump tube diameter, submergence ratio, heat input are varied to analyze the bubble pump performance. The results indicate that the efficiency is practically independent of the heat input and nearly independent of diameter, but increases with increase in submergence ratio. The pumping ratio is practically independent of heat input, but increases with decrease in bubble pump tube diameter and increase in submergence ratio. The liquid mass flow rate depends on heat input and submergence ratio, but it is practically independent of the bubble pump diameter.
Assembly and Structure of Primitive Membraneless DNA Liquid Crystal Coacervates

Compartmentalization supported the eventual assembly and evolution of protocells on early Earth. Recent trends have resulted in investigation of membraneless droplets as primitive compartments. Membraneless droplets, such as DNA peptide coacervates, could have been present on early Earth due to the potential prevalence of amino acid and/or nucleotide-based polymers. Here, we introduce a peptide/DNA coacervate system where the structural complexity can be increased through incorporation of DNA liquid crystals (LC). LC-coacervates form through peptide-DNA binding (coacervation) and DNA stacking (LC formation), and can transition through all known LC mesophases through variations in salinity, heat, and hydration. We predict that the increased structural complexity of LC phases applied to coacervates could help to increase the functional complexity of primitive compartment systems, perhaps even extending applications to modern engineering fields.
Monetary Policy Rules for Small and Open Developing Economies: A Counterfactual Policy Analysis
Tony Cavoli,Ramkishen S.Rajan 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2006 Journal of Economic Development Vol.31 No.1
This paper uses a model calibrated to suit a small open Asian economy to present a series of counterfactual policy experiments aimed at comparing conventional optimal inflation targeting (IT) under commitment and discretion and variations of simple fixed monetary policy rules (MPRs). Two significant points of departure between the model presented here and previous ones for industrial countries are the incorporation of the real exchange rate and consideration of possible contractionary depreciation/devaluation. This represents a realistic scenario for some Asian economies after the crisis. In assessing the impact of different policy types it is essential to find parameters for model calibration that suitably represent the small and open Asian economies that have recently implemented inflation targeting arrangements. We have used estimates from Thailand over a recent period (1993-2003) to assist in selecting these parameters.

An investigation of the gas-liquid ejector has been carried out to study the influence of operating conditions and ejector geometries on the hydrodynamics and mass transfer characteristics of the ejector by using three-dimensional CFD modeling. The CFD results were validated with experimental data. Flow field analysis and prediction of ejector performance were also conducted. Variations of the operating conditions were made by changing the gas-liquid flow rates ratio in the range of 0.2 to 1.2. The length to diameter ratio of mixing tube (LM/DM) was also varied from 4 to 10. CFD studies show that at LM/DM=5.5, the volumetric mass transfer coefficient increases with respect to gas flow rate. Meanwhile, at LM/DM=4, the plot of volumetric mass transfer coefficient to gas-liquid flow rate ratio reaches the maximum at gas-liquid flow rate ratio of 0.6. This study also shows that volumetric mass transfer coefficient decreases with the increase of mixing tube length.
Sympathetic Magic in A.I. and the Humanities

Much of what we consider humorous is a perishable commodity. As the shifting plates of the Zeitgeist create new opportunities for humour in one domain of human experience, other opportunities dry up or cease to be topical. To deploy automated humour generation in a dynamic environment, we shall need to build flexible frameworks that allow designers to respond quickly to changing norms and topical new targets for wit. We consider Twitter to be such an environment, and explore the rapid development of new humour generators by transferring a reusable sense of humour from one domain-specific generator to another. We articulate what it means for a computer program to have a sense of humour in the first place, before we distinguish between those aspects that are generic and reusable from those that are bespoke and tied to a specific goal.
