<P>Energy storage is becoming highly important as renewable generation sources are added to the mix in electrical power generation and distribution systems. Supercapacitors and batteries could allow renewables to overcome intermittency difficulties by regulating the voltage, frequency, and phase angle of the power. Transition-metal oxide, hydroxide, and sulfide forms, carbonaceous materials, and conducting polymers can be used as electrodes for supercapacitors. Graphene is considered to be a promising material for supercapacitors because of its high surface area and theoretical gravimetric capacitance. However, aggregation of graphene sheets severely decreases the accessible surface area and theoretical gravimetric capacitance. Here we report a unique synthesis route of a hybrid nickel cobalt sulfide anchored in a crumpled and porous graphene framework to address the aforementioned problem. The hybrid sample, a nickel cobalt sulfide/crumpled-porous graphene framework, delivered higher specific capacitance and better electronic conductivity than the porous graphene framework when used as a supercapacitor electrode. OBJECTIVES: The Aedes mosquito is a vector for transmitting many arboviruses. Knowledge of the breeding habitat of this vector is vital for implementing appropriate interventions. Thus, this study was conducted to determine the breeding habitats and presence of Aedes mosquito species in the study areas. METHODS: A house-to-house cross-sectional survey of Aedes mosquito breeding habitats was carried out in Metema and Humera, Ethiopia, in August 2017. All available water-holding containers present in and around houses were inspected for the presence of immature stages of Aedes mosquitoes, and they were collected and reared to the adult stage for species identification. In the larval survey, the house index, container index, and Breteau index were computed as risk indices. RESULTS: Of the 384 houses surveyed for the presence of Aedes mosquito larval breeding, 98 were found to be positive for larvae. During the survey, a total of 566 containers were inspected, of which 186 were found to be infested with Aedes mosquito larvae, with a container index of 32.9, a house index of 25.5, and a Breteau index of 48.4. The most common Aedes mosquito breeding habitats were discarded tires (57.5%), followed by mud pots (30.0%). Of the 1,077 larvae and pupae collected and reared, Aedes aegypti (49.3%), Ae. vittatus (6.5%), and Culex species (44.2%) were identified. CONCLUSIONS: Discarded tires were the most preferred breeding habitats for Aedes mosquitoes. Moreover, Ae. aegypti, the main vector of dengue and other arboviruses, was identified for the first time in this region, suggesting a high potential for arbovirus transmission in the study areas.

In this paper, a class of linear second order singularly perturbed delay differential turning point problems containing a small delay (or negative shift) on the reaction term and when the solution of the problem exhibits twin boundary layers are examined. A hybrid finite difference scheme on an appropriate piecewise-uniform Shishkin mesh is constructed to discretize the problem. We proved that the method is almost second order ε-uniformly convergent in the maximum norm. Numerical experiments are considered to illustrate the theoretical results.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A novel Mn4+ activated SrLaScO4 was synthesized and investigated for its crystal structure and optical characteristics. SrLaScO4 exhibits a well-known K2NiF4 structure, it crystalizes in Abma space group and provides an octahedral site of ScO6 which was exploited for Mn4+ incorporation. The synthesized phosphor showed broad excitation bands and an uncommon narrow emission band centered at 690 nm with an full width at half maximum (FWHM) of ∼35 nm. The optimal activator ion concentration for SrLaScO4:Mn4+ was found to be ∼0.8 mol%. The photoluminescence and photoluminescence excitation characteristics indicate that it can be opted as red emitting material for the white LEDs for indoor agriculture where the deep red emissions are favored. Hypertension (HTN), characterized by an elevation of blood pressure, is a serious public health chronic condition that significantly raises the risks of heart, brain, kidney, and other diseases. In South Africa, the prevalence of HTN (measured objectively) was reported at 46.0% in females, nonetheless little is known regarding the prevalence and risks factors of self-reported HTN among the same population. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine determinants of self-reported HTN among women in South Africa. The study used data obtained from the 2016 South African Demographic and Health Survey. In total, 6,027 women aged ≥ 20 years were analyzed in this study. Self-reported HTN was defined as a case in which an individual has not been clinically diagnosed with this chronic condition by a medical doctor, nurse, or health worker. Multiple logistic regression models were employed to examine the independent factors of self-reported HTN while considering the complex survey design.Overall, self-reported HTN was reported in 23.6% (95% confidence interval [CI], 23.1–24.1) of South African women. Being younger (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 0.04; 95% CI, 0.03–0.06), never married (aOR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.56–0.85), and not covered by health insurance (aOR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.58–0.95) reduced the odds of self-reported HTN. On the other hand, being black/African (aOR, 1.73; 95% CI, 1.17–2.54), perception of being overweight (aOR, 1.72; 95% CI, 1.40–2.11), and perception of having poor health status (aOR, 3.53; 95% CI, 2.53–5.21) and the presence of other comorbidities (aOR, 7.92; 95% CI, 3.63–17.29) increased the odds of self-reported HTN.Self-reported HTN was largely associated with multiple sociodemographic, health, and lifestyle factors and the presence of other chronic conditions. Health promotion and services aiming at reducing the burden of HTN in South Africa should consider the associated factors reported in this study to ensure healthy aging and quality of life among women.

The metal alkoxide, CuCo-glycerate nanospheres (NSs), were successfully synthesized as Cu-Co bimetallic sulfides hierarchical multi-shelled hollow nanospheres ($CuCo_2S_4$ HMHNSs) through solvothermal synthesis. In this reaction mechanism, the solvothermal temperature and the amount of glycerol as a cosurfactant play significant role to optimize the morphology of CuCo-glycerate NSs. Furthermore, $CuCo_2S_4$ HMHNSs were obtained under optimized sulfurization reaction time of 10 h via anion exchange reaction between glycerate and sulfur ions. Finally, the structural and chemical compositions of CuCo-glycerate NSs and $CuCo_2S_4$ HMHNSs were confirmed through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and electrochemical performances.
