An Investigation of Financial Investment Intention using Covariance-Based Structural Equation Modelling

Thien Sang Lim,Rasid Mail,Mohd Rahimie Abd Karim,Zatul Karamah Abdul Baharul Ulum,Mazalan Mifli,Junainah Jaidi 사람과세계경영학회 2020 Global Business and Finance Review Vol.25 No.2

Purpose: Decision-making process about financial investment is complicated. Relying on modern financial theory to explain behaviours of individual investors is inadequate because it focuses on the objective risk as the determinant for making investment decisions under the assumption that individuals are rational. The current study, which was built from the financial, sociological and psychological perspectives, investigated the predictors of risk perception and determined the association of risk perception and attitude toward financial investment intention. This study served the purpose of unravelling the complexity of the financial investment decision-making process among individuals. Design/methodology/approach: The research framework was based on Perception Formation Model (PFM) with further support from the Theory of Planned Behaviour, decision making models under risk, and knowledge-attitudebehaviour model. Purposive-sampling method was adopted. The dataset, which consisted a total of 492 responses from income earners below the age of prime savings years were entered for analysis. Twelve hypotheses were tested using the Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS) statistical software. Findings: Measurement-model assessment revealed the data fitted well to the research model Results from the structural-model assessment revealed subjective knowledge, peer influence, internet influence, and risk propensity had a significant relationship with favourable risk perception. Consistent with the PFM proposition, it was found favourable risk perception significantly related to higher intention toward financial investment. Research limitations/implications: The resultant outcomes strengthen the understanding of how financial investment decision is performed by individuals, which is crucial in the personal-finance industry, especially in promoting a long-term and meaningful client-advisor relationship. Interestingly, objective knowledge, which measured the actual level of financial knowledge was found to be insignificantly associated with risk perception and intention toward financial investment. As a sizeable financial literature posited financial knowledge has impact on decision-making process, future study could perhaps examine whether objective knowledge could contextually alter the relationship between predictors and the endogenous variable. Originality/value: The study has successfully identified several predictors for risk perception about financial investment and provided an empirical link for knowledge-perception-attitude-intention, thus, enriching the behavioural finance literature. The research model was robust as it was formulated based on the three major pillars of behavioral finance, namely: financial, sociological, and psychological perspectives.

Characterization of a Biflaviolin Synthase CYP158A3 from Streptomyces avermitilis and Its Role in the Biosynthesis of Secondary Metabolites

        Lim, Young-Ran,Han, Songhee,Kim, Joo-Hwan,Park, Hyoung-Goo,Lee, Ga-Young,Le, Thien-Kim,Yun, Chul-Ho,Kim, Donghak The Korean Society of Applied Pharmacology 2017 Biomolecules & Therapeutics(구 응용약물학회지) Vol.25 No.2

Streptomyces avermitilis produces clinically useful drugs such as avermectins and oligomycins. Its genome contains approximately 33 cytochrome P450 genes and they seem to play important roles in the biosynthesis of many secondary metabolites. The SAV_7130 gene from S. avermitilis encodes CYP158A3. The amino acid sequence of this enzyme has high similarity with that of CYP158A2, a biflaviolin synthase from S. coelicolor A3(2). Recombinant S. avermitilis CYP158A3 was heterologously expressed and purified. It exhibited the typical P450 Soret peak at 447 nm in the reduced CO-bound form. Type I binding spectral changes were observed when CYP158A3 was titrated with myristic acid; however, no oxidative product was formed. An analog of flaviolin, 2-hydroxynaphthoquinone (2-OH NQ) displayed similar type I binding upon titration with purified CYP158A3. It underwent an enzymatic reaction forming dimerized product. A homology model of CYP158A3 was superimposed with the structure of CYP158A2, and the majority of structural elements aligned. These results suggest that CYP158A3 might be an orthologue of biflaviolin synthase, catalyzing C-C coupling reactions during pigment biosynthesis in S. avermitilis.

      • Cyclocurcumin from Curcuma longa selectively inhibits shear stress-induced platelet aggregation

        Ngo, Thien,Kim, Keunyoung,Bian, Yiying,An, Gwang-Jin,Bae, Ok-Nam,Lim, Kyung-Min,Chung, Jin-Ho ELSEVIER SCIENCE B.V.; AMSTERDAM 2019 JOURNAL OF FUNCTIONAL FOODS Vol.61 No.-

Abstract

Curcuma longa (C. longa) has been the subject of intensive research for pleiotropic therapeutic potential. However, except for curcumin, the biological activities of other active ingredients of C. longa are not well known. Here, we demonstrated that C. longa extract significantly attenuated shear stress-induced platelet aggregation and cyclocurcumin exhibited the most potent activity (IC50 of 6.33 ± 3.29 μM). Cyclocurcumin potently inhibited shear stress-induced platelet activation, primarily through modulating the initial step, vWF – platelets GP Ib interaction. Moreover, cyclocurcumin effectively inhibited thrombus formation, without influencing platelet cell viability or blood clotting time. Collectively, we demonstrated that cyclocurcumin might be a promising therapeutic agent for the treatment or prevention of thrombotic diseases.

Highlights

Curcuma longa extract inhibits shear stress-induced platelet aggregation (SIPA).

Cyclocurcumin significantly suppresses SIPA and thrombus formation.

Cyclocurcumin inhibits platelet activation depending on shear stress.

Cyclocurcmin modulates vWF and platelet GP Ib interaction in high shear stress.

Cyclocurcumin does not affect on platelet cytotoxicity nor blood clotting time.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

Chlorella-gold nanorods hydrogels generating photosynthesis-derived oxygen and mild heat for the treatment of hypoxic breast cancer

        Lee, Changkyu,Lim, Kyungseop,Kim, Sung Soo,Thien, Le Xuan,Lee, Eun Seong,Oh, Kyung Taek,Choi, Han-Gon,Youn, Yu Seok Elsevier 2019 Journal of controlled release Vol.294 No.-

Abstract

Hypoxic tumors are rarely cured because their low oxygen environment restricts the cytotoxicity of many chemotherapeutics by blocking the production of intracellular reactive oxygen species. Inspired by the highly efficient production of oxygen as a waste product of chlorella photosynthesis, we developed an in situ rapidly gelling BSA-PEG–based hydrogel depot system that contains chlorella and gold nanorods, namely Chlorella AuNRs BSA-Gel. The entrapped chlorella in our gel efficiently generated a high level of oxygen and oxygenated hemoglobin via photosynthesis in response to 660-nm light in vitro and in vivo, respectively. The incorporated gold nanorods showed excellent performance in precisely increasing the surrounding temperature to 41–42 °C responding to 808-nm near-infrared laser, which presumably played a supporting role in expanding the tumor vasculature and thereby facilitating the delivery of doxorubicin and oxygen to hypoxic tumors of mice. Our results showed that a combined therapy of Chlorella AuNRs BSA-Gel plus Dox followed by irradiation at 660 nm and 808 nm significantly abolished 4 T1 breast cancer cell-xenografted tumors of BALB/C mice. We believe that our oxygen-generating and mild heat-emitting hydrogel should be considered to be a valid prototype of a local depot system for treatment of hypoxic tumors.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

        임동혁,조상복,Lim, Dong-Hyeog,Tran, Trung-Thien,Cho, Sang-Bock 대한전자공학회 2013 전자공학회논문지 Vol.50 No.11

Lane boundary detection plays a key role in the driver assistance system. This study proposes a robust method for detecting lane boundary in severe environment. First, a horizontal line detects form the original image using improved Vertical Mean Distribution Method (iVMD) and the sub-region image which is under the horizontal line, is determined. Second, we extract the lane marking from the sub-region image using Canny edge detector. Finally, K-means clustering algorithm classifi left and right lane cluster under variant illumination, cracked road, complex lane marking and passing traffic. Experimental results show that the proposed method satisfie the real-time and efficient requirement of the intelligent transportation system.

Near infrared light-responsive heat-emitting hemoglobin hydrogels for photothermal cancer therapy

        Lee, Changkyu,Lim, Kyungseop,Kim, Sung Soo,Thien, Le Xuan,Lee, Eun Seong,Oh, Kyung Taek,Choi, Han-Gon,Youn, Yu Seok Elsevier 2019 Colloids and surfaces Biointerfaces Vol.176 No.-

Abstract

Photothermal therapy (PTT) is an effective means of treating tumors because tumor cells are sensitive to heat. Gold and carbon nanoparticles are used as efficient PTT materials. However, development of a non-toxic biodegradable PTT agent remains a challenge. Here, we developed a hemoglobin (Hb) hydrogel that exhibited excellent PTT effects in vitro and in vivo. Unlike conventional PTT agents, which are toxic and do not decompose completely in the body, the Hb hydrogel was manufactured using only two components: (i) Hb, a natural substance derived from the human body, and (ii) PEG, an FDA-approved polymer. The gelation time of the Hb hydrogels could be controlled by changing the Hb concentration. Because Hb is present at a high concentration (150 mg/ml) in the body, the Hb hydrogel decomposed and was eliminated in vivo without toxicity. The Hb hydrogel showed an excellent PTT effect in response to 808 nm near-infrared (NIR) laser irradiation and had excellent anticancer effects against A549 lung cancer cells both in vitro and in vivo. Blood hematology and blood biochemical assay results from an animal model treated with Hb hydrogel were similar to those of the control group. Importantly, toxicity was not observed based on H&E staining of major organs (heart, liver, spleen, kidneys and lung). Tumors of A549 cell-xenografted mice treated with Hb hydrogel and 808 nm NIR laser irradiation were significantly smaller than those of the control group (23.1 mm3 versus 746.5 mm3, respectively). This is a first report of a biocompatible photothermal hydrogel based on hemoglobin, and our overall results suggest that Hb hydrogels are commercially-promising PTT systems that have excellent anti-cancer effects.

Highlights

We developed a prototype of in situ injectable hemoglobin hydrogel forming within 60 s.

This hydrogel emitted sufficient heat in response to the nearinfra red light irradiation.

This hydrogel exhibited noticeable ablation effect on the HCT116 cell-based tumors.

This hemoglobin hydrogel would be potential as a photothermal antitumor agent for colon cancers.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]
