Mechatronics Education Using Robot Competition in Okayama University of Science

Electronics machines make daily human life more convenient and comfortable and try to ease burdens. When designing and manufacturing such mechatronic systems, the engineers need to have a wide range of knowledge. The purpose of our education is for students to learn to use mechatronic techniques. To realize our goal, we regard "an interest in creation" of our student as an important educational method. In this paper, we propose and try an educational method for mechatronics creation using "their interest". The method is to hold robot competitions between 1st and 3rd year students as a regular curriculum. In order to confirm the progress of our students in our engineering course, in the last year, some students entered the Rescue Robot Contest held in Kobe Japan. As a result, our student team got second place, a great honor considering it was our first attempt. We confirm that the robot competition is a useful method to make students study by themselves.

We propose a single-flux-quantum (SFQ) logic system based on the reactiondiffusion-collision fusion computation. The fusion computation is a way of digital processing that performs logic operation by applying analogy of nonlinear physical and chemical systems to the structure of the logic operation. It is very powerful for implementing a given digital operation with a small number of logic gates. A fusion computation system consists of regularly arrayed unit cells, where each cell has two input arms and two output arms and is connected to its neighboring cells with the arms. Each cell accepts two input signals A and B and produces two output signals AB and AB. A fusion computation system, as a whole, can operate any combinational logic function. We designed functional SFQ circuits that implemented the fusion computation. The unit cell was able to be made with ten Josephson junctions. Circuit simulation showed that SFQ fusion computation systems could operate at very high speed, about ten times faster than conventional CMOS logic systems.
Mechanisms of Biped Humanoid Robot and Online Walking Pattern Generation

This paper describes the mechanism of a biped humanoid robot, KBHR (Kanagawa Biped Robot-2), that has large moveable angles similar to humans’. The KBHR has 29 degrees of freedom (DOF) (two 6 DOF legs, a 3 DOF waist and two 7 DOF arms). Also, an online walking pattern generation method for a biped humanoid robot based on preview control is proposed. Depending on the walking parameters (step length, height, etc.), a pre-3-step pattern is created, and one step of the 3-step pattern is selected for one step of the robot. Using KBHR, various walking experiments are conducted, and the effectiveness of the mechanism and the online walking pattern generation method is confirmed.
Recent Breakthroughs in Postharvest Physiology Research and Cut Flower Handling in Japan

Senescence of flower petals has been reported to be controlled by genetically programmed cell death (PCD). Based on nuclear morphology and DNA degradation, which are parameters of PCD, we can categorize petal senescence for six plants into three types. In all plants, except for Prunus yedoensis, marked DNA degradation was observed during petal senescence. In morning glory, petunia and Argyranthemum frutescens, nuclear fragmentation occurred during PCD. In contrast, chromatin fragmentation in the nuclei was observed in carnation and snapdragon flowers. However, nuclear or chromatin fragmentation was not observed in P. yedoensis. In carnation flowers, PCD associated with petal senescence was shown to be highly regulated by ethylene. Wet transport is better than dry transport for maintaining the freshness of cut flowers, but the vase life of cut flowers is not markedly longer for wet transport than dry transport. Treatment with sucrose plus antimicrobial compounds before shipping and during wet transport extended vase life of rose flowers. This treatment was shown to be effective in extending vase life in practice for the transport of cut roses from Hokkaido and Chiba Prefecture to markets in Tokyo. Pulse treatment with silver thiosulfate complex (STS), an inhibitor of ethylene action, in combination with sucrose before shipping are followed by treatment with sucrose plus antimicrobial compounds during wet transport, extended the vase life of cut Eustoma, Delphinium and snapdragon flowers. This treatment was also confirmed to be effective in practice.
야생참깨에서 agrobacterium rhizogenes 유도 모상근의 배양조건

In order to investigate optimized culture conditions of hairy roots of Sesamum schinzianum (wild sesame) induced by infection of Agrobacterium rhizogenes, ATCC 15834 and MAFF03-01724 were cultured in various media, sucrose concentrations and pH levels. As the results, best growth condition of hairy roots induced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes strains was obtained in 1/2 MS medium free of hormone, 3% sucrose and pH 8.0. Hairy roots induced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes MAFF03-01724 showed better growth of extensive lateral root branches than that of ATCC 15834. In opine analysis, hairy roots induced by Agrobacterium rhizogenes ATCC 15834 was detected as agropine type while mikimopine in that of MAFF03-01724.
