Ramelteon for Delayed Sleep-wake Phase Disorder: A Case Report

Recently developed melatonin receptor agonists are expected to be effective for delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSWPD). To date, however, no study has described the effect of melatonin receptor agonists on DSWPD. We report the case of a 15-year-old girl with DSWPD who was successfully treated with ramelteon 4 mg at 7 PM. DSWPD symptoms were resolved; her sleep-wake and biological rhythms were normalized.

In 1996, the Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University, Japan entered an era of open student-exchange with Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg, Germany. Thus far, more than 50 of our students have devoted anywhere from three months, to an entire year of their courses, to collaborative efforts with fellow students, (-and some cases, the local citizenry) -in their native environment experiencing unfamiliar education systems and cultures.
Emotional Level of Sadness for Normal and Dementia Subjects by NIRS

This paper proposes a method to measure the level of sadness by the 52 channels signals of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Normal and dementia subjects are measured while they watch the sad video story. The analysis has been done by using the first principal component of 52 measured signals, and the paper proposes to classify sadness into two classes; sequence of emotional reactions defining ‘dynamic sadness’ and accumulation of sadness defining ‘static sadness’. Both represent the feeling of sadness. They are measured quantitatively by the power over the certain frequencies and the time average of principal components of the measured NIRS signals. The measured signals of the normal subjects show that weight distribution parameters are rather large in the prefrontal cortex area corresponding from 32 to 52 channels, which indicates the subjects understanding the story. This paper shows that the difference of the sad emotion between the normal and dementia subjects is found by using both time average and power of the first principal component of NIRS signals over the whole measurement time. These informations may be used to test brain activities of both normal and dementia subjects. The proposed approach can be used to measure other brain activities using NIRS signals.

The Faculty of Engineering, Niigata University, Japan, obtained the scholarship in "Short-Stay and Short-Visit scholarship programs(SS-SV programs)" for both German and Japanese students in 2011 and 2012. Our short-term student exchange programs proved that a short-term stay in a foreign country worked as an initiator for the students' interest and it strengthen their will to study further more in foreign countries.

We report about the international cooperative activities for the engineering education between a German University and a Japanese University. After the experiences for 15 years of cooperation, both in research and student exchange, we learned a lot about the differences between these two educational systems. This report summarizes the differences and the future perspective for the improvement of engineering education based on the understanding of the differences, including advantages and disadvantages, between two educational systems.

Faculty of engineering, Niigata University has been executing start-up engineering education programs for the first-year students to educate his or her ability to solve engineering problems. They are divided into teams and tackle a task that they expect to easily accomplish. The expected results are hardly obtained. Then they try to seek the gap between the results and their knowledge. They analyze the phenomena and improve the approach. They evaluate the results of second trial and the effectiveness of the measures. That is, the project requires so-called PDCA cycles for students to solve engineering problems. The start-up engineering project is one of the compulsory subjects and seven departments have given the students several tasks based on their technicality. The students exchange their knowledge, ideas and learn how to use knowledge to solve the problems. Their reports and questionnaire survey proved that the projects are highly effective to improve his or her ability to solve engineering problems and give them strong motivation to learn engineering. We introduce the some tasks and the outcomes of the projects set by seven departments; mechanical and production engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, information engineering, biocybernetics, chemistry and chemical engineering, civil engineering and architecture, and material science and engineering.
