“Religion, nationality, or politics: Catholicism in the Russian empire, 1863–1905”
Ted Weeks 한양대학교 아태지역연구센터 2011 Journal of Eurasian Studies Vol.2 No.1
Focusing primarily on official sources, this essay examines perceptions of Catholicism and Catholics from the 1860s. Throughout this period, the Russian government almost instinctively understood “Catholic” and “Polish” as synonyms, even when it explicitly denied doing so. This conflation of religious and ethnic categories colored official policies toward other Catholics such as Belarusians and Lithuanians who ostensibly were potential allies against the Poles. Even measures such as the attempt to introduce Russian into Belarusian Catholic churches foundered in part on officialdom's profound distrust for Catholicism. This essay is a contribution to our understanding of religious and national categories in late Imperial Russia and also to the study of russification in this period.
A Hedging Strategy is Needed Toward North Korea
( Ted Galen Carpenter ) 한국국방연구원 2004 The Korean Journal of Defense Analysis Vol.16 No.1
The U.S.-led campaign to pressure North Korea into abandoning its quest for nuclear weapons has encountered numerous difficulties. One reason for the lack of progress is that it is unclear why Pyongyang repudiated the 1994 Agreed Framework and is seeking a nuclear weapons capability. It is possible that the DPRK regime is merely using its program as bargaining leverage to obtain concessions from the United States and the nations of East Asia and would be willing to remain non-nuclear in exchange for such concessions. But it is equally possible that North Korea, for reasons of both prestige and security, is deadly serious about becoming a nuclear weapons state. The first scenario means that the crisis probably can be resolved through diplomacy; the second suggests that the crisis will intensify. In any case, Washington`s strategy of forging a common front among Pyongyang`s neighbors to pressure the regime has not yet produced meaningful results. That is especially true of the reliance on China to exert the necessary diplomatic and economic pressure. Although the PRC is in the best position to influence North Korea, the Beijing government is reluctant to use that leverage. The United States needs a hedging strategy in the event that the DPRK will not relinquish its nuclear ambitions. Preemptive military action is not a realistic option, since it would likely trigger a disastrous war on the Korean Peninsula. Instead, America`s fallback strategy should be to deter North Korea by making it clear that any transfer of nuclear weapons or technology to terrorist organizations or rogue states would mean war.

Objectives: Practitioners work with children presenting with sensory processing difficulties. There is limited evidence about the relationship between children’s sensory processing and their executive functioning. This study investigated the relationship between children’s sensory processing and executive functioning. Methods: Forty parents/guardians of typically developing children (M = 7.42 years [89.05 months; SD = 11.13]; 50% female) from Australia completed the Sensory Processing Measure (SPM) and Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function, Second Edition (BRIEF2). Scores were analysed using Spearman rho correlations with bootstrapping. Results: Some SPM subscales were found to be significantly correlated with the four BRIEF2 composite scales: the Behavior Regulation Index (BRI; rs = .31 - .38, p < .05), Emotion Regulation Index (ERI; rs = .34 - .59, p < .05), Cognitive Regulation Index (CRI; rs = .32 - .45, p < .05) and Global Executive Composite (GEC; rs = .32 - .45; p < .05). The SPM subscales were also found to be predictive of the BRIEF2 composite scales: ERI regression model (Adj R 2 = .27, p < .005), CRI regression model (Adj R 2 = .34, p < .001) and GEC regression model (Adj R 2 = .37, p < .001). Discussion: This study provides preliminary evidence that children’s sensory processing factors impact their executive functioning since they appear to be significantly associated. This information can be used to inform occupational therapists’ goal setting and intervention provision with children and their families.

Most people believe a good performance by a national team in an international sports tournament can enhance the domestic interest in that sport. By examining the case of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) in Taiwan, this paper investigates the follow-up influence of international tournaments on attendance at domestic games. It has been found that people react differently to tournaments held in and out of Taiwan and to mega and non-mega events. If the national team participates in a mega international tournament abroad, attendance at the CPBL games for the following season increases by 770 people or 24.3% per game. However, for non-mega international tournaments, the attendance effects differ based on how well the national team performs. If the national team cannot beat at least 78% of the teams in a non-mega tournament abroad or half of the teams in a tournament held in Taiwan, the average attendance may fall.
Vitamins and minerals for women
Ted Greiner 한국영양학회 2011 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.5 No.1
Women’s nutrition has received little attention in nutrition programming, even though clinical trials and intervention trials have suggested that dietary improvement or supplementation with several nutrients may improve their health, especially in low-income settings, the main focus of this paper. Most attention so far has focused on how improvements in maternal nutrition can improve health outcomes for infants and young children. Adequate vitamin D and calcium nutrition throughout life may reduce the risk of osteoporosis, and calcium supplementation during pregnancy may reduce preeclampsia and low birth weight. To reduce neural tube defects, additional folic acid and possibly vitamin B12 need to be provided to non-deficient women before they know they are pregnant. This is best achieved by fortifying a staple food. It is unclear whether maternal vitamin A supplementation will lead to improved health outcomes for mother or child. Iron, iodine and zinc supplementation are widely needed for deficient women. Multimicronutrient supplementation (MMS) in place of the more common iron-folate supplements given in pregnancy in low-income countries may slightly increase birth weight, but its impact on neonatal mortality and other outcomes is unclear. More sustainable alternative approaches deserve greater research attention.
