      • Extraskeletal Ewing Sarcomas in Late Adolescence and Adults: A Study of 37 Patients

        Background: Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma (EES)/primitive neuroectodermal tumours (PNET) are rare soft tissue sarcomas. Prognostic factors and optimal therapy are still unconfirmed. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis on patients to explore the clinic characteristics and prognostic factors of this rare disease. A total of 37 patients older than 15 years referred to our institute from Jan., 2002 to Jan., 2012 were reviewed. The characteristics, treatment and outcome were collected and analyzed. Results: The median age was 28 years (range 15-65); the median size of primary tumours was 8.2 cm (range 2-19). Sixteen patients (43%) had metastatic disease at the initial presentation. Wide surgical margins were achieved in 14 cases (38%). Anthracycline or platinum-based chemotherapy was performed on 29 patients (74%). Radiotherapy was delivered in 13 (35%). At a median follow-up visit of 24 months (range 2-81), the media event-free survival (EFS) and overall survival (OS) were 15.8 and 30.2 months, respectively. The 3-year EFS and OS rates were 24% and 43%, respectively. Metastases at presentation and wide surgical margins were significantly associated with OS and EFS. Tumour size was significantly associated with OS but not EFS. There were no significant differences between anthracycline and platinum based chemotherapy regarding EFS and OS. Conclusions: EES/PNET is a malignant tumour with high recurrence and frequent distant metastasis. Multimodality therapy featuring wide surgical margins, aggressive chemotherapy and adjuvant local radiotherapy is necessary for this rare disease. Platinum-based chemotherapy can be used as an adjuvant therapy.

        Disturbance-observer Based Adaptive Control for Second-order Nonlinear Systems Using Chattering-free Reaching Law

        In this paper, an adaptive sliding mode control incorporating with a nonlinear disturbance observer isproposed for a class of second-order nonlinear systems with unknown parameters and matched lumped disturbance. A double hyperbolic reaching law with chattering-free characteristic is first constructed, and an adaptive slidingmode controller is designed to guarantee the satisfactory tracking performance and fast error convergence. Thechattering problem is eliminated by means of the infinitely approaching equilibrium point instead of crossing it byemploying two hyperbolic functions. In order to identify the unknown parameters accurately, an adaptive parametricupdate law is presented through constructing a set of auxiliary filtered variables. Then, a nonlinear disturbanceobserver is proposed to improve the tracking performance and compensate for the lumped disturbance includingperturbations and uncertainties. The stability analysis is provided by the Lyapunov stability theory, and a numericalsimulation on a mass-spring damper system is given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

        Frequency and Fusion in Language Processing

        Two separate studies on language production and comprehension are reviewed. The production study involves phonological fusion in Beijing Mandarin, leading to a syntactic change. The processing study involves experimental results in reading Chinese and English passages. Both sets of results reflect automaticity and fusion in the processing of high-frequency words in discourse.

      • From Laboratory Microgrid to Real Markets

        This paper aims to identify and briefly address major gaps between nowadays technical (laboratory/pilot) Microgrid solutions and real-life (quasi-)commercial Microgrid market demands under a global setting. Firstly, both technical and commercial aspects of Microgrid story are illustrated in parallel; both sides’ inherent motivations, scopes, business models etc. are compared. Then the paper deeper identifies and discusses existing gaps for application under three different categories: Major (internal) technical gaps: · Grid-connected and off-grid dual mode operation support · Meeting Microgrid network constraints / requirements · Protection solution for new / upgraded Microgrids Major (external) regulatory gaps: · Islanding vs. anti-island vs. low voltage ride through requirements · Microgrid controllability definition at point of common coupling Major market gaps: · Acknowledgement of local consumption; · Extra incentives and differentiation from DG market Consequently, general gap-narrowing principles and techniques are recommended for the above listed issues. Then the corresponding responsibilities and benefits of main stakeholders (producer, consumer, Microgrid operator etc.) in a Microgrid are proposed under this framework. Finally, a global Microgrid development roadmap is envisaged taking into account of regional differences as well as potential technology advancements in future.

      • Hepatitis B Virus Gene Mutations and Hepatocarcinogenesis

        Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has long been the most common cause of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, some aspects of the pathogenesis of HBV infection and genesis of hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still inconclusive. An increasing number of published studies indicate that hepatitis B virus mutations are associated with risk of HCC. These variations include, in particular, mutations in ORF S,C,X gene regions. This mini-review summarizes results of clinical studies and molecular mechanisms on the possible relations of HBV mutations with the development of hepatocellular carcinoma.

        Effects of Strain Energy Adjustment: A Case Study of Rock Failure Modes during Deep Tunnel Excavation with Different Methods

        The strain energy adjustment processes and rock failure modes corresponding to different excavation methods, such as Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) or blasting, are quite different during construction of deep tunnel. Based on the diversion tunnel excavation of Jin-Ping II hydropower station (JPII) in southwestern China, the distribution characteristics of damage zones and adjustment process of rock strain energy under different excavation methods are analyzed and discussed, and the occurrences of rock bursts in the diversion tunnels are also monitored and analyzed. Research reveals that, the adjustment process of rock strain energy and the distribution of damage zones are obviously different under different excavation methods, and the depth and distribution of damage zone are positively correlated with the accumulation depth of rock strain energy. For blasting excavation, due to the combined effects of blast loading and in situ stress transient unloading, the surrounding rock is damaged seriously. The accumulation depth of rock strain energy is significantly larger than that by TBM excavation, while the accumulation peak of rock strain energy is smaller. For TBM excavation, the strain energy releases smoothly and slowly, and much more strain energy is accumulated in the vicinity of excavation face. Under similar geological conditions in the JPII, the rock bursts of intensive and mediate grades can be more frequently observed after blasting for the impact of severe excavation disturbance, and the strain energy transient adjustment may be the main disturbance contributor. While during TBM excavation, due to the smooth adjustment process of rock strain energy, the disturbance to surrounding rock is limited, and the accumulation peak of rock strain energy is higher and closer to the excavation face, which may result in more spalling events or minor rock bursts.

        FAM46B inhibits cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in prostate cancer through ubiquitination of β-catenin

        FAM46B is a member of the family with sequence similarity 46. Little is known about the expression and functional role (s) of FAM46B in prostate cancer (PC). In this study, the expression of FAM46B expression in The Cancer Genome Atlas, GSE55945, and an independent hospital database was measured by bioinformatics and real-time PCR analysis. After PC cells were transfected with siRNA or a recombinant vector in the absence or presence of a β-catenin signaling inhibitor (XAV-939), the expression levels of FAM46B, C-myc, Cyclin D1, and β-catenin were measured by western blot and realtime PCR. Cell cycle progression and cell proliferation were measured by flow cytometry and the CCK-8 assay. The effects of FAM46B on tumor growth and protein expression in nude mice with PC tumor xenografts were also measured. Our results showed that FAM46B was downregulated but that β-catenin was upregulated in patients with PC. FAM46B silencing promoted cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in PC, which were abrogated by XAV-939. Moreover, FAM46B overexpression inhibited PC cell cycle progression and cell proliferation in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. FAM46B silencing promoted β-catenin protein expression through the inhibition of β-catenin ubiquitination. Our data clearly show that FAM46B inhibits cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in PC through ubiquitination of β-catenin.

      • The Experimental Practices of VoIP Based on the Commercial Softswitch Device

        A softswitch is the central device of the next-generation network (NGN) which is the hotspot in telecommunication industry. So it’s of great significance for the students and related companies to carry out practical experiments and researches based on the commercial softswitch device. Three stage targets of the VoIP, from the elementary to the profound, are proposed according to the characters of the softswitch teaching. The hardware and the software queuing system of the NGN laboratory of Harbin University of Science and Technology, which was designed and built for the targets, are introduced. Students can be queued for experiments with commercial VoIP devices in the NGN laboratory. Three categories of experiments, IP to IP, IP to Phone, and Softphone application development, are designed to cultivate innovative talents.

        Synthesis, Application, and Recovery of Alkali-Clearable Disperse Dyes Containing Azo Pyridone Structure

        Carboxylic acid ester disperse dyes containing an azo pyridone structure have a high molar extinction coefficient,excellent washing color fastness, and simple synthetic methods. Dyes were readily synthesized through a conventional diazocoupling reaction between the reactant ethyl p-aminobenzoate and a coupling component containing an azo pyridonestructure. Subsequently, the molecular structures of the target products were characterized by FTIR, mass spectrometry,1H NMR, 13C NMR, UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The synthesized dyes were used to dyepoly(ethylene terephthalate) fabric, and their washing and rubbing color fastness properties were tested and compared underdifferent post-treatment methods. Moreover, under the condition of alkali clearing, the relationships among different alkaliconcentrations and clearing effects were studied to determine the optimal alkali clearing process conditions for dyed fabrics,and the minimum alkali consumption required to obtain the best results was determined. It was found that carboxylic esterdisperse dyes containing an azo pyridone structure showed good dyeing performance and alkali-clearable properties onpolyester fibers. In addition, in hydrolyzate recovery, BaCl2 (salting out) can be used instead of acidification to recover thedye hydrolyzate, which has good environmental benefits.
