질풍노도, 그 이후 (Ⅰ): 런던 『에쿠우스』- 전위와 저항의 연착

This paper investigates the popular and the critical responses to the London premiere of Peter Shaffer’s Equus (1973). The notion, established by Shaffer scholars, that the theatre production of Equus received unanimous acclaim both from the public and the critics is put into question. An extensive reading of London theatre reviews of the play reveals a much more complicated situation, in which positive reponses to its theatrical achievement are intermingled with negative ones regarding its thematic significance. In a final analysis, a tenacious criticism questioning the play’s societal meanings overrides the fervent reactions to its theatricality. The historical context of Equus and its critical reception is also examined, For its dramatic argument Shaffer’s play draws on the “ theatre of protest." which had continued to dominate the British theatre since 1950s: it also exploits the techniques and themes of avant garde theatre, whose movement was culminated in the fringe theatres of 1960s. As many theatre historians agree, early 1970s marked a turning point, after which avant garde theatre in Britain became absorbed into the mainstream and gradually disappeared. In that context, Equus, produced by The National Theatre, one of the most prestigious mainstream theatres of Britain, is seen to have secured its success by containing the social protest of the earlier tradition and diluting the principles of avant garde theatre.

본 논문은 셰익스피어의 『줄리우스 시저』에 대한 해석을 이 작품이 생산된 역사적 시점의 문화적 조건들에 기반하고자 하는 시도이다. 구체적으로 이 작품의 초연 당시 관객구성체의 뚜렷한 일부를 형성하고 있었던 런던 도제들에게 이 작품의 수용적 의미는 어떤 것이었을까 하는 질문을 제기한다. 그 질문은 먼저 당대 사회에 있어서 상업연극이라는 새로운 문화적 현상, 특히 연극의 사회 ㆍ정치적 기능을 둘러싼 논란과 그 논란의 사회적 틀에 대한 역사적 고찰을 요구한다. 『줄리우스 시저』의 극적 갈등의 근저에 놓인 ‘제의’에 대한 점유권 투쟁은 종교개혁 이 후 영국사회의 문화적 갈등의 한 축을 반영한다. 전통적ㆍ민중적 축제를 새로운 형태(帝政)의 지배권력 강화를 위한 수단으로 전유하려는 시저와 이에 대항하여 공동체적 가치(공화정) 수호를 위해 제의적 전통을 보존하려는 공화파 사이의 갈등은 르네상스 영국의 민족국가(절대왕정)와 신교도 사회(런던시와 같은 민간정부) 가 공동으로 또는 경쟁적으로 수행한 카톨릭의 제의적 문화에 대한 전유과정에 비견될 수 있다. 그러나 이 해석틀의 한계는 극이 시저와 영국 절대왕정, 그리고 로마 공화파와 신교도 민간정부 사이의 유추적 관계를 명확히 재현하기보다는 의도적인 중첩과 교차를 통해 복잡다단하게 제시한다는 사실에 있다. 무엇보다 공화파의 극적 재현은 이들이 르네상스 영국 선교도 사회의 지배적 에토스를 부분적으로 대변하기도 하지만, 결정적으로는 오히려 그에 대치되는 입장을 제시하게끔 이루어지고 있다. 대신 극은 또 다른 유추적 관계를 ‘극장’을 매개로 하여 로마 공화파와 런던 도제 들 사이에 설정한다. 공화파 청년들이 폼페이 극장에 집결한 것처럼, 1590년대 사회경제적 불만으로 인한 빈번한 폭동의 현장이었던 런던 극장가에 모여든 도제들은 “압제 타도, 자유, 해방이다!" 라고 외치는『줄리우스 시저』의 청년들에게서 사회 적 항거의 중심에 선 자신의 모습을 발견했는지 모른다. 카스카를 공화파 진영으로 불러들이는 캐시우스의 ‘이념적 호명’을 통해 런던 도제들은 한 사회의 ‘도덕적 대리인’으로서의 자기 이미지를 확인했는지 모른다. 이러한 청년문화의 집단적ㆍ정치적 행동주의가 이 극의 무대와 객석 사이에 일정한 역학으로 작용했다면, 다른 한편 ‘행동’ 이전의 반성과 회의를 통해 불확실한 개인의 정체성 문제를 제기하는 브루터스에게서 런던 도제들은 도덕적 대리인이라는 사회적 가면 뒤에 숨겨진, 성장의 위기에 선 연약한 한 젊은이의 얼굴을 목격했는지도 모른다.

Inhibition and Chemical Mechanism of Protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase from Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes KF707

Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes KF707에서 정제한 protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase의 특징을 조사하기 위하여 pH안정성, 화학적 저해, 화학적 수식과 pH의존성 반응 상수에 대한 실험을 수행하였다. 이 효소는 pH 4.5~10.7에서 안정하였다. L-ascorbate와 glutathione은 Kis가 각각 0.17 mM과 0.86 mM인 경쟁적 저해제였으며, DL-dithiothreitol은 Kis 1.57 mM 및 Kii 8.08 mM의 비경쟁적 저해패턴을 나타내었다. Potassium cyanide, p-hydroxybenzoate 및 sodium azide는 Kis가 각각 55.7 mM, 0.22 mM 및15.64 mM이었으며, Kii는 각각94.1 mM, 8.08 mM, 및 662.64 mM인 비경쟁적 저해패턴을 나타내었다. FeCl2는 Kis가 29 μM로 가장 우수한 경쟁적 저해제였으며, FeCl3, MnCl2, CoCl2, HgCl2, AlCl3도 각각 Kis가 1.21 mM, 0.85 mM, 3.98 mM, 0.17 mM 및 0.21 mM인 경쟁적 저해패턴을 보였다. 한편, 다른 금속이온들은 비경쟁적 저해패턴을 나타내었다. pH의존성 반응상수의 실험결과로부터 pK 6.2와 9.4의 촉매부위와 pK 5.5와 9.0의 결합부위가 존재함을 알 수 있었다. Lysine, cysteine, tyrosine, carboxyl과 histidine은 각각의 고유한 화학적 수식제에 의해 수식되었는데, 이는 이들 잔기들이 결합과 촉매에 관여한다는 것을 나타낸다. 위 결과를 토대로 화학적 메커니즘을 제시한다. We carried out pH stability, chemical inhibition, chemical modification, and pH-dependent kinetic parameter assessments to further characterize protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase from Pseudomonas pseudoalcaligenes KF707. Protocatechuate 3,4-dioxygenase was stable in the pH range of 4.5~10.5. L-ascorbate and glutathione were competitive inhibitors with Kis values of 0.17 mM and 0.86 mM, respectively. DL-dithiothreitol was a noncompetitive inhibitor with a Kis value of 1.57 mM and a Kii value of 8.08 mM. Potassium cyanide, p-hydroxybenzoate, and sodium azide showed a noncompetitive inhibition pattern with Kis values of 55.7 mM, 0.22 mM, and 15.64 mM, and Kii values of 94.1 mM, 8.08 mM, and 662.64 mM, respectively. FeCl2 was the best competitive inhibitor with a Kis value of 29 μM. FeCl3, MnCl2, CoCl2, and AlCl3 were also competitive inhibitors with Kis values of 1.21 mM, 0.85 mM, 3.98 mM, and 0.21 mM, respectively. Other metal ions showed noncompetitive inhibition patterns. The pH-dependent kinetic parameter data showed that there may be at least two catalytic groups with pK values of 6.2 and 9.4 and two binding groups with pK values of 5.5 and 9.0. Lysine, cysteine, tyrosine, carboxyl, and histidine were modified by their own specific chemical modifiers, indicating that they are involved in substrate binding and catalysis.

The crucial question of 'what and how to teach in the English literature classroom' has emerged in the wake of new historicisms that efface the traditional boundary between literature and history, center and margin of a text, and aesthetics and politics. A greater urgency is added to the question by the "multi-media revolution,' which has collapsed distinct domains of cultural practices into a unified circuit of consumerism. Under the circumstances, changes are being made in the English literature classroom, too. This paper investigates two issues involved in the current restructuring of curriculum and syllabus-and the resistance against it: the advocation for 'culture-oriented literary education" and the argument for 'return to close reading." As both arguments disclose limitations as well as validities, this paper takes an alternative approach and suggests a syllabus of English Renaissance that 1) overrides the-hierarchical-dichotomy of literary and cultural texts, 2) adopts the anthropological concept of culture rather than the Arnoldian one, 3) centers on the learners' independent perspectives and experiences-through performance-of the text, In sum, the syllabus is devised to engage the learners in a praxis of critical consciousness, which is essential to a civil society.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disease which produces repeated seizures. Over 30% of epileptic patients cannot be treated with anti-epileptic drugs, and surgical resection may cause loss of brain functions. Seizure suppression by electrical stimulation is currently being investigated as a new treatment method as clinical evidence has shown that electrical stimulation to brain could suppress seizure activity. In this paper, design of a real-time closed-loop neurostimulation system for epileptic seizure suppression is presented. The system records neural signals, detects seizures and delivers electrical stimulation. The system consists of a 6-channel electrode, front-end amplifiers, a data acquisition board by National Instruments, and a neurostimulator and Generic Osorio-Frei algorithm was applied for seizure detection. The algorithm was verified through simulation using electroencephalogram data, and the operation of whole system was verified through simulation and in- vivo test.
