Purpose Total or proximal gastrectomy of the upper-third early gastric cancer (u-EGC) often causes severe post-gastrectomy syndrome, suggesting that these procedures are extremely invasive for patients without pathologically positive lymph node (LN) metastasis. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical applicability of a stomach function-preserving surgery, local resection (LR), with prophylactic left gastric artery (LGA)-basin dissection (LGA-BD). Materials and Methods The data of patients with u-EGC (pathologically diagnosed as T1) were retrospectively analyzed. Total gastrectomy was performed in 30 patients, proximal gastrectomy in 45, and subtotal gastrectomy in 6; the LN status was evaluated assuming that the patients had already underwent LR + LGA-BD. This procedure was considered feasible in patients without LN metastases or in patients with cancer in the LGA basin. The reproducibility of the results was also evaluated using an external validation dataset. Results Of the 82 eligible patients, 79 (96.3%) were cured after undergoing LR + LGA-BD, 74 (90.2%) were pathologically negative for LN metastases, and 5 (6.1%) had LN metastases, but these findings were only observed in the LGA basin. Similarly, of the 406 eligible tumors in the validation dataset, 396 (97.5%) were potentially curative. Tumors in the lesser curvature, post-endoscopic resection status, and small tumors (<20 mm) were considered to be stronger indicators of LR + LGA-BD as all subpopulation cases met our feasibility criteria. Conclusions More than 95% of the patients with u-EGC might be eligible for LR + LGA-BD. This function-preserving procedure may contribute to the development of u-EGC without pathological LN metastases, especially for tumors located at the lesser curvature Purpose Total or proximal gastrectomy of the upper-third early gastric cancer (u-EGC) often causes severe post-gastrectomy syndrome, suggesting that these procedures are extremely invasive for patients without pathologically positive lymph node (LN) metastasis. <P>We investigate the feasibility of the use of 1-m length of our fabricated bismuth oxide-based nonlinear fiber (Bi-NLF) for the implementation of a Mamyshev-type 2R regenerator that is based on self-phase-modulation-induced spectral broadening followed by spectral filtering, and evaluate the regeneration performance in both experimental and theoretical ways from a perspective of system application. Owing to the excellent dispersion and chi(3) nonlinearity characteristics of our 1-m-long Bi-NLF, a nonlinear S-shape power transfer curve is readily obtained. A Q-factor improvement of a noisy 10-Gb/s return-to-zero signal by 1.2 dB is achieved by use of the regenerator</P>

In this study, the emission inventories of NOx, which is a major air pollutant of South Korea were compared and analyzed. The two bottom-up emission inventories, Clean Air Policy Support System (CAPSS) and Regional Emission inventory in ASia (REAS), which are the latest emission inventories about the air pollutant emissions about South Korea were compared to find out the trend of NOx emission during 1996-2005. Also, these two emission inventories were compared with the top down NOx emissions estimated from satellite observations to validate the amount of NOx emitted from South Korea. The total NOx emission trends, sectoral and regional comparisons were carried out. The trend of the top down estimated NOx emission was similar to CAPSS and REAS. However, the magnitudes of the top down estimated NOx emission were usually closer to those of CAPSS than those of REAS. The NOx emissions from transportation sector of REAS were larger than that of CAPSS, and this corresponded to the difference of total amount of NOx emission between CAPSS and REAS. By comparing the differences of the ratios of the vehicle kilometers traveled (VKT) and emission factors (EFs), it was identified that most of the difference between CAPSS and REAS was due to these factors for diesel vehicles in REAS. Implications of this higher VKT values in REAS were discussed.

<P>We investigate a six-air-hole bismuth-oxide-based photonic crystal fiber (Bi-PCF) in terms of Brillouin characteristics. One huge challenge in measuring the Brillouin properties of the Bi-PCF is the nonnegligible beam reflection at the splicing points, which can be attributed to the mirroring effect caused by different refractive indices of silica and bismuth fibers. To solve the problem we propose a method that is based on the combination of a pump-probe beat lock-in scheme and a normalized gain curve-fitting technique. Using this method, successful characterization of Brillouin properties for a 1.16-m-long Bi-PCF is experimentally demonstrated. With the measured Brillouin gain coefficient and the known chi((3)) nonlinearity parameters, the Kerr nonlinearity figure-of-merit (F(nl-SBS)), including the stimulated Brillouin scattering-caused pump-power limit, is also estimated for the Bi-PCF.</P>

The implementation of a stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) free, optical fibre phase conjugator by use of only 1 m length of fabricated bismuth oxide-based nonlinear fibre (Bi-NLF), has been experimentally demonstrated. A high OSNR phase-conjugated signal was readily achieved owing to the unique properties of the Bi-NLF such as an ultra-high χ(3) nonlinearity and a high SBS threshold although no SBS suppression scheme was employed. Using the phase conjugator, error-free transmission of the signal is readily achieved over a 150 km SMF link.
