Hydrometallurgical recovery of copper from the leach liquor of waste PCBs

        Kumari Suruchi,Panda Rekha,Bawkar Shilpa Kalamani,Hait Jhumki,Yoo Kyoungkeun,Prasad Ranjit,Jha Manis Kumar 한국자원공학회 2024 Geosystem engineering Vol.27 No.2

The present work is focused on the recovery of pure copper metal from leach liquor of discarded printed circuit boards (PCBs) using solvent extraction and electrowinning techniques. Leach liquor containing copper was produced from PCBs of scrap computers using pretreatment followed by the leaching technique. The obtained leach liquor contained 19.35 g/L of copper and 6 M concentration of nitric media. From the obtained leach liquor, systematic solvent extraction and electrowinning studies were carried out for maximum extraction of copper, leaving other metals to be present as impurities. Various process parameters of solvent extraction viz. effect of pH, contact time, phase ratio, and so on were studied and optimized. McCabe–Thiele diagram was plotted, which shows that complete recovery of copper can be achieved in three stages using 40% LIX 84IC and O/A ratio 1/1 at equilibrium pH 2.2 in a mixing time of 20 min. The loaded copper was stripped using 10% H2SO4. The obtained strip solution containing 19.35 g/L Cu was electrowinned at the optimized condition, i.e., 8 hours’ time and 205 A/m2 cathode density with 99.99% current efficiency. 99.8% pure copper metal was obtained. The developed process is environmentally sustainable and has potential to be commercialized after scale-up studies.

Gene clustering and co-expression analysis for the identification of putative transcription factors associated with the genes of secondary metabolic pathways in Plantago ovata Forsk. and its wild allies

        Gupta Suruchi,Singh Ravail,Paul Prosenjit,Kaul Sanjana,Lattoo Surrinder K.,Dhar Manoj K. 한국식물생명공학회 2024 Plant biotechnology reports Vol.18 No.1

Genus Plantago of Plantaginaceae family is bestowed with a repertoire of structurally diverse secondary metabolites that have not only been used as therapeutics but also effect the plant physiology by conferring adaptive advantages under stress. Assuming that domestication process in plants has influenced their secondary metabolites, we performed a comparative transcriptome of wild and cultivated species of Plantago to analyze the variation in the expression of genes related to sec- ondary metabolite pathways. GO and KEGG analysis of DEGs in wild species showed their enrichment in abiotic stresses, oxidation–reduction and secondary metabolite related pathways. Overall, we found upregulation of genes of carotenoid, flavonoid and phenylpropanoid, isoprenoid, terpenoid and alkaloid pathways in wild species of Plantago in particular, P. lanceolata while mucilage pathway-related genes showed higher expression in P. ovata. Moreover, transcriptome data pre- sented putative transcription factors associated with terpenoids, carotenoid and phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathways which were also identified using co-expression analysis of cluster 9 (secondary metabolite enriched gene cluster). Taken together, the genomic resource obtained from the present study form a valuable repository of genetic information for elucidating and exploring the secondary metabolic circuitry of Plantagos. Further, information on the regulatory aspects of genes related to secondary metabolites, shall aid in the enhanced production of valuable metabolites in these plants.

Predictors of discogenic pain in magnetic resonance imaging: a retrospective study of provocative discography performed by posterolateral approach

( Anuj Jain ),( Suruchi Jain ),( Swapnil Kumar Barasker ),( Amit Agrawal ) 대한통증학회 2021 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.34 No.4

Background: Provocative discography (PD) is a test that is useful in diagnosing discogenic pain (DP). In this study, to diagnose DP, we used a posterolateral approach of needle placement and followed pressure criteria laid down by the Spine Intervention Society. The aim was to identify the correlation between magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings (desiccation, high intensity zone and change in shape and size of the disc) and the results of PD. Methods: Records of 50 patients who underwent PD for DP were analyzed. A total of 109 PDs were performed, with 54 suspect and 55 control discs. Alternate pain generators were ruled out. Results: A total of 35 suspect discs were positive on PD. The mean disc pressure in the suspect disc was 31.9 ± 7.9 psi (range, 15-44). Of the 50 patients who underwent PD, 35 had positive MRI findings. A significant positive correlation was found only between disc desiccation and discography result (r = 0.6, P < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that only desiccation successfully predicted the result of discography (OR = 26.5, P < 0.001); a high intensity zone and a disc protrusion/ extrusion had an OR 2.3 and 1.24, respectively. Disc desiccation of Pfirmann grade 3 or more had a sensitivity and specificity of 0.93 and 0.64 respectively in identifying painful discs; the positive likelihood ratio was 2.58 while the negative likelihood ratio was 0.11. Conclusions: In patients with DP, disc desiccation is the most useful MRI feature that predicts a painful disc on PD.

Diversity and Bioactive Potential of Culturable Fungal Endophytes of Medicinal Shrub Berberis aristata DC.: A First Report

        ( Supriya Sharma ),( Suruchi Gupta ),( Manoj K. Dhar ),( Sanjana Kaul ) 한국균학회 2018 Mycobiology Vol.46 No.4

Bioactive natural compounds, isolated from fungal endophytes, play a promising role in the search for novel drugs. They are an inspiring source for researchers due to their enormous structural diversity and complexity. During the present study fungal endophytes were isolated from a well-known medicinal shrub, Berberis aristata DC. and were explored for their antagonistic and antioxidant potential. B. aristata, an important medicinal shrub with remarkable pharmacological properties, is native to Northern Himalayan region. A total of 131 endophytic fungal isolates belonging to eighteen species and nine genera were obtained from three hundred and thirty surface sterilized segments of different tissues of B. aristata. The isolated fungi were classified on the basis of morphological and molecular analysis. Diversity and species richness was found to be higher in leaf tissues as compared to root and stem. Antibacterial activity demonstrated that the crude ethyl acetate extract of 80% isolates exhibited significant results against one or more bacterial pathogens. Ethyl acetate extract of Alternaria macrospora was found to have potential antibacterial activity. Significant antioxidant activity was also found in crude ethyl acetate extracts of Alternaria alternata and Aspergillus flavus. Similarly, antagonistic activity of the fungal endophytes revealed that all antagonists possessed inhibition potential against more than one fungal pathogen. This study is an important step towards tapping endophytic fungal diversity for bioactive metabolites which could be a step forward towards development of novel therapeutic agents.

Orlicz sequence spaces of four dimensional regular matrix and their closed ideal

        Kuldip Raj,Suruchi Pandoh,Anu Choudhary 호남수학회 2019 호남수학학술지 Vol.41 No.4

In this paper we introduce some new types of double difference sequence spaces defined by a new definition of convergence of double sequences and a double series with the help of sequence of Orlicz functions and a four dimensional bounded regular matrices $A=(a_{rtkl})$. We also make an effort to study some topological properties and inclusion relations between these sequence spaces. Finally, we compute the closed ideals in the space $l_{\infty}^{2}.$

KJP : Original Article; Bertolotti Syndrome : A Diagnostic and Management Dilemma for Pain Physicians

( Anuj Jain ),( Anil Agarwal ),( Suruchi Jain ),( Chetna Shamshery ) 대한통증학회 2013 The Korean Journal of Pain Vol.26 No.4

Background: Bertolotti`s syndrome (BS), a form of lumbago in lumbosacral transitional vertebrae, is an important cause of low back pain in young patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the etiology of low back pain and the efficacy of treatment offered to patients with BS. Methods: All patients of BS Castellvi type1a during a period of 6 months were enrolled in the study. The patients underwent interventional pain procedures for diagnosis and pain relief. Response to the therapy was assessed based on VAS and ODI scores. A 50% decrease in VAS score or a VAS score less than 3 would be considered adequate pain relief. Results: All 20 patients diagnosed with BS during the 6-month observation period had scoliosis. Common causes of back pain were the ipsilateral L5-S1 facet joint, neoarticulation, the SI joint, and disc degeneration. Responses to various interventions for pain relief were different and inconsistent from patient to patient. In particular, responses to interventions for neoarticular pain were generally poor. Conclusions: Pain in patients with BS does not usually respond to interventional pain treatment. A very dynamic treatment approach must be pursued while managing BS patients, and the treatment plan must be individualized at various stages in order to obtain satisfactory pain relief. Seroprevalence of immunoglobulin G antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 in children and adolescents in Delhi, India, from January to October 2021: a repeated cross-sectional analysis

Pragya Sharma,Saurav Basu,Suruchi Mishra,Mongjam Meghachandra Singh 질병관리본부 2022 Osong Public Health and Research Persptectives Vol.13 No.3

Objectives: The aim of this study was to assess changes in the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) immunoglobulin G (IgG) seroprevalence among children and adolescents in Delhi, India from January 2021 to October 2021Methods: This was a repeated cross-sectional analysis of participants aged 5 to 17 years from 2 SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence surveys conducted in Delhi, India during January 2021 and September to October 2021. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies were detected by using the VITROS assay (90% sensitivity, 100% specificity). Results: The seroprevalence among 5- to 17-year-old school-age children and adolescents increased from 52.8% (95% confidence interval [CI], 51.3%−54.3%) in January 2021 to 81.8% (95% CI, 80.9%−82.6%) in September to October 2021. The assay-adjusted seroprevalence was 90.8% (95% CI, 89.8%−91.7%). Seropositivity positively correlated with participants’ age (p<0.001), but not sex (p=0.388). A signal to cut-off ratio ≥4.00, correlating with the presence of neutralization antibodies, was observed in 4,814 (57.9%) participants. Conclusion: The high percentage of seroconversion among children and adolescents indicates the presence of natural infection-induced immunity from past exposure to the SARS-CoV-2 virus. However, the lack of hybrid immunity and the concomitant likelihood of lower levels of neutralization antibodies than in adults due to the absence of vaccination warrants careful monitoring and surveillance of infection risk and disease severity from newer and emergent variants.
