Apatite Forming Ability of a Non-Woven Silica Fabric Containing Calcium

<P>Non-woven silica fabric was made by electro-spinning method for the potential application as a bone grafting material. The silica gel, the source material for electro-spinning, was prepared by the hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate in the presence of calcium salt, water, hydrochloric acid and ethanol. It was transferred to a syringe, which was connected to the high voltage supply generating a high electric field between the spinneret and the ground collecting drum. The silica fibers containing calcium were spun under the electric field of 2 KV/cm. Their diameters were in the range from about 0.3 μm to 8 μm. It was heat-treated at 300 oC for 3 hours. After soaking in the SBF for 1 week, low crystalline apatite crystals were observed to occur on their surfaces. From the results, it can be concluded that the non-woven silica fabric containing calcium made by electro-spinning method and then heat-treated has a bioactivity. It means it has a potential to be used as a bone grafting material because of its apatite-forming ability, high surface area to volume ratio and high porosity.</P>
Symbiobacterium toebii sp. nov., Commensal Thermophile Isolated from Korean Compost

A thermophilic nonspore-forming rod isolated from hay compost in Korea was subjected to a taxonomic study. The microorganism, designated as SC- IT, was identified as a nitrate-reducing and nonmotile bacterium. Although the strain was negatively Gram-stained, a KOH test showed that the strain SC-1^(T) belonged to a Cram-positive species. Growth was observed between 45 and 70℃. The optimal growth temperature and pH were 60℃ and pH 7.5, respectively. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 65 mol% and the major quinone types were MK-6 and MK-7. A phylogenetic analysis based on 16s rDNA sequences revealed that the strain SC- 1' was most closely related to Symbiohacteriurn thermophilum. However, the level of DNA-DNA relatedness between strain SC- I' and the type strain for Symbiohacteriurn thermophilum was approximately 30%. Accordingly, on the basis of the phenotypic traits and molecular systematic data, the strain SC-I^(T) would appear to represent a new species within the genus Symbiobacterium. The type strain for the new species is named SC-1^(T) (=KCTC 0307BP^(T); DSM 15906^(T)).

<P>The effect of silica content in the PMMA/silica nano-composite on the mechanical properties and the growth behavior of apatite crystals were investigated. The PMMA/silica nano-composites with different silica content were synthesized through the sol-gel reaction with triethoxysilane end-capped PMMA and tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The compressive strength showed its maximum value when the content of TEOS was 20 wt% while the elastic modulus showed its maximum value when the content of TEOS was 60 wt%. The growth behavior of the apatite crystals following the cell culture showed different response according to the silica content. As increasing the TEOS content, the shape of the apatite crystals changed from globule-like structure to fiber-like one.</P>

A wrist wearable cuffless pulsimeter with a portable and small size apparatus using Hall effect is fabricated. The analysis of the pulse wave measured by the testing product of pulsimeter is done to measure the pulse rate and blood pressure. The blood pressure obtained by the puslimeter is compared with the practical values measured by electronic or mercury liquid blood pressure meters. The detail analysis of a pulse wave measured by a wrist wearable cuffless pulsimeter detecting the changes of the magnetic field can be used to develop a new diagnostic algorithm of blood pressure applying for oriental medical apparatus.
