        Effect of herbal medicine (Huanglian-jie-du granule) for somatic symptoms and insomnia in patients with Hwa-byung: A randomized controlled trial

        Background: Huanglian-jie-du (HJD) granule, which is composed of representative “heat-clearing” herbs has been used for Hwa-byung. Hwa-byung is a culture-bound syndrome in Korea, characterized by distinct somatic symptoms such as chest congestion and heat sensation resulting from suppressed anger. We investigated the effect of HJD in patients with Hwa-byung. Methods: Forty-four patients with Hwa-byung were recruited, and HJD or placebo granules were administered orally three times daily for seven days. The two primary outcomes were somatic symptoms, which were measured by Patient Health Questionnaire of physical symptoms (PHQ-15), and insomnia, which was measured by Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) at post-treatment. Results: Between July 10 and October 31, 2017, 44 patients with Hwa-byung (mean age 36.68 years; and 38 female) were randomly assigned to HJD (n = 22) or placebo (n = 22) group. After administration of HJD or placebo granule for seven days, ISI score was lower in the HJD group compared to placebo group at post-treatment (adjusted mean difference -2.56 [95% CI -4.72 to -0.39], p = 0.0208). Meanwhile, there was no difference in PHQ-15 score between HJD group and placebo group at post-treatment (adjusted mean difference -0.50 [95% CI: -3.02–4.02], p = 0.7812). Conclusions: Our results suggest that the administration of HJD granule has a potential to improve insomnia in Hwa-byung patients. Effect of HJD granule for general somatic symptoms in Hwa-byung patients is unclear, and further researches are needed.

        Synthesis and Properties of PCPP-Based Conjugated Polymers Containing Pendant Carbazole Units for LEDs

        New poly(cyclopenta[def]phenanthrene) (PCPP)-based conjugated copolymers, containing carbazole units as pendants, were prepared as the electroluminescent (EL) layer in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to show that most of them have higher maximum brightness and EL efficiency. The prepared polymers, Poly(2,6-(4-(6-(N-carbazolyl)-hexyl)-4-octyl-4H-cyclopenta[def]phenanthrene)) (CzPCPP10) and Poly(2,6-(4-(6-(N-carbazolyl)-hexyl)-4-octyl-4H-cyclopenta[def]phenanthrene))-co-(2,6-(4,4-dioctyl-4H-cyclopenta[def]phenanthrene)) (CzPCPP7 and CzPCPP5), were soluble in common organic solvents and used as the EL layer in light-emitting diodes (LEDs) of configuration with ITO/PEDOT/polymer/Ca/Al device. The polymers are thermally stable with glass transition temperature (Tg) at 77-100 C and decomposition temperature (Td) at 423-457 C. The studies of cyclic voltammetry indicated same HOME levels in all polymers, although the ratios of carbazole units are different. In case of PLEDs with configuration of ITO/PEDOT/CzPCPPs/Ca/Al device, The EL maximum peaks were around 450 nm, which the turn-on voltages were about 6.0-6.5 V. The maximum luminescence of PLEDs using CzPCPP10 was over 4400 cd/m2 at 6.5 V, which all of the maximum EL efficiency were 0.12 cd/A. The CIE coordinates of the EL spectrum of PLEDs using CzPCPP10 was (0.18, 0.08), which are quite close to that of the standard blue (0.14, 0.08) of NTSC.

        A Complex Reinforced Polymer Interposer with Ordered Ni Grid and SiC Nano-whiskers Polyimide Composite Based on Micromachining Technology

        A complex reinforced polymer interposer comprised with conductive Nicylinders, ordered Ni grid and SiC nano-whiskers/Polyimide (PI)composite was proposed. The conductive Ni cylinders distributing in themiddle of each Ni grid unite designed as the supporting structure wereused as electric connecting component for the interposer and wereinsulated by the SiC nano-whiskers/PI composite. The comprehensiveproperties of the complex reinforced polymer interposer were improvedby a complex reinforced mechanism: the improved thermal conductivityand mechanical strength by the Ni supporting structure and the reducedmetal/polymer interfacial mismatch due to the SiC nano-whiskers/PIcomposite with the optimized mixture ratio. The above complexreinforced polymer interposer and a traditional reinforced polymerinterposer only with Ni grid were fabricated using micro-machiningtechnology for comparative analysis. The comprehensive properties ofthese two polymer interposers were analyzed respectively. Comparedwith the traditional design, the comprehensive properties of the proposedcomplex reinforced polymer interposer were improved further, such as,21.3% increase for the Young modulus, 10.1% decrease for thecoefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and 54.9% increase for thethermal conductivity. Such complex reinforced mechanism based on themetal ordered grid and random nano-whiskers has potential to expandthe applications of the polymer interposer.

        Characterization and expression analysis of BcAMT1;4, an ammonium transporter gene in flowering Chinese cabbage

        Ammonium (NH 4+ ) is generated during many endogenous metabolic processes in the leaves of plants, and there is increasing evidence that ammonium transporters (AMTs) play important roles in NH 4 + transmembrane transport and distribution. However, the expression of diff erent AMT genes is tissue-type specifi c and their functions diff er. Information about AMT genes and their expression under diff erent environmental conditions in fl owering Chinese cabbage ( Brassica campestris L.) is currently limited. Here, we isolated and characterized an AMT gene, BcAMT1;4 , in fl owering Chinese cabbage. BcAMT1;4 was localized to the plasma membrane and complemented NH 4+ transport in NH 4+ uptake-defi cient yeast. The highest expression levels of BcAMT1;4 were detected in the fl owers and leaves of fl owering Chinese cabbage. The expression of BcAMT1;4 was induced by nitrogen defi ciency and signifi cantly inhibited by the reapplication of NH 4+ (NH 4 Cl or NH 4 NO 3 ). In contrast, when plants pre-cultured in nitrate were transferred to an NH 4+ nutrient solution, BcAMT1;4 expression was signifi cantly enhanced. BcAMT1;4 exhibited a diurnal expression pattern, with higher expression levels during the light period than during the dark period, and a peak expression at the later stage of the light period. Knowledge of AMT genes in fl owering Chinese cabbage will lay a foundation for enhancing our understanding of the functional roles of diff erent AMT members in the regulation of its growth by NH 4+ , as BcAMT1;4 seems to play an important role in leaf NH 4+ transport.

        Enhancement of Mechanical and Thermal Properties of SU‑8 Photoresist with Multilayer Woven Glass Fabric Based on Micromachining Technology

        SU-8 photoresist has been more and more widely used as a structural material in micro electromechanical system (MEMS) because of its low cost and excellent biocompatibility. However, the inferior mechanical and thermal performances immensely impinge the reliability of the MEMS device based SU-8 and accordingly restrict its application. Here we report the mechanicaland thermal performance of SU-8 reinforced by the multilayer glass fabric with the MEMS technology. The finite element simulation and specific experiment are conducted, which confirm that the reinforced SU-8 composites have a 281% increase in Young’s modulus and a 64% decrease in coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) compared with pure SU-8. Additionally,the improved mechanism has also been analyzed, including the excellent interface bonding between the SU-8 and glass fabric, and the high-bond energy of Si–O-Si chain structures in glass fabric. Furthermore, the glass fabric reinforced SU-8 could still possess a high light transmittance to maintain the ability of lithography patterning. Therefore, it is believed thatthe strategy proposed here may satisfy higher requirements of MEMS devices, which guarantees its practical applications in the functional microstructures.

        Development of an Efficient and Controllable Nano-porous Copper with Good Wettability and Capillary Performance for Wicks of Vapor Chamber

        To meet the heat dissipation requirements of microelectronic devices, it is urgent to develop an efficient method to fabricate a controllable micro/nano structure for the wick in vapor chamber, which is widely investigated for its high thermal conductivity and small size. This work proposed a controllable fabrication of nano-porous copper (NPC) with high efficiency, which includes electrodeposition and dealloying. A uniform Cu–Zn alloy with single phase was prepared as the precursor for dealloying through electrodeposition. An innovative solution system for dealloying was developed for the fabrication of the bi-continuous NPC, in which the efficiency was improved ten times compared to the conventional acid solution. In addition, the effects of dealloying parameters on the NPC morphology and the process efficiency have also been studied systematically. Based on the above method, both good wettability and capillary performance were achieved by NPC with tunable pore size, which indicates its great application prospects in wicks for high-performance vapor chamber.
