      • First Record of the Biting Midges, genus Atrichopogon (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) from Korea

        Subong Ha,Mijin Kim,Jeeyoung Park,Youngju Kim,Hungsik Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2014 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.10

Recently in the course of examining Korean diptera, we found a species, Atrichopogon femoralis Tokunaga placed in the subfamily Forcipomyinae Meigen. Forcipomyinae is most specious in the family Ceratogonidae, and comprise about 5,566 extant species placed in 103 genera in four subfamilies (Borkent and Wirth, 1997) from almost all the zoogeographic regions. Genus Atrichopogon is second largest genus, with about 520 species (Borkent, 2012). Currently 39 valid species of 6 genera belonging to 3 subfamily are known in Korea. The specimens were collected from intermountain area and reservoir of Chungcheongnam-do, Cheonan-si, and Gyeongsangbuk-do, Gyeongju-si by black light trap (BLT) in 2013. We report an occurrence Atrichopogon femoralis Tokunaga for the first time in Korea, and of which diagnosis, description, distribution and photo images are presented. For further researches, we also provide a key to genera of Korean Ceratopogonidae.

Preparation and Characterization of PAN-based Superfined Carbon Fibers for Carbon-paper Applications

        Kim, Subong,Chung, Yong Sik,Choi, Heung-Soap,Jin, Fan-Long,Park, Soo-Jin Korean Chemical Society 2013 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.34 No.12

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based ultrafine fibers and carbon fibers were produced by wet-spinning, and the crystal sizes and thermal and mechanical properties of the fibers were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the superfine fibrils in the surfaces of the PAN/polyvinyl acetate (PVA) blend fibers increased slightly with increasing PAN content before removal of the PVA. Differential scanning calorimetry indicated that the PAN and PVA in the blend fibers do not mix and, therefore, each maintains their inherent thermal characteristics. The crystal sizes of the blend fibers prepared by removing PVA with water increased at 5 wt % water. The extent of the reaction of the PAN carbon fibers, as calculated from the FT-IR spectra, is maximized at the stepwise temperature of $230^{\circ}C$, and the density increased significantly above this temperature. The carbon fibers had relatively good mechanical properties, as shown by their tensile strength and modulus values of 2396 MPa and 213 GPa, respectively.

Synthesis of Polyacrylonitrile as Precursor for High-Performance Ultrafine Fibrids

        Kim, Subong,Kuk, Yun-Su,Jin, Fan-Long,Park, Soo-Jin Korean Chemical Society 2014 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.35 No.2

Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) copolymers with different methyl acrylate (MA) contents were synthesized via solution polymerization and used as precursors for high-performance PAN ultrafine fibrids. The chemical structures of the copolymers were characterized using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and $^{13}C$ nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Their particle sizes and aspect ratios increased with increasing viscosity, and the degree of crystallinity increased with decreasing concentration of copolymer solution. In contrast, their peak temperature and heat of exotherm increased with decreasing concentration of the copolymer solution. The aromatization indices (AIs) of the fibrids increased with increasing heat-treatment time; however, the AIs decreased when the heat-treatment temperature was higher than the onset temperature of the copolymers. On the other hand, the crystal sizes of the fibrids decreased with increasing concentration of the copolymer solution when the MA content was held constant.

Comparison of Speech Recognition and Subjective Hearing Handicap in Elderly Listeners as a Function of Degree of Hearing Loss

KyooSang Kim,Subong Kim,Jae Hee Lee 한국청각언어재활학회 2020 Audiology and Speech Research Vol.16 No.2

Purpose: This study aimed to compare objective speech recognition and subjective hearing handicap outcomes as a function of a degree of hearing loss. Methods: 120 elderly listeners participated, ranging in age from 60-83 years. Listeners’ degrees of hearing loss were derived corresponding to a newly proposed World Health Organization hearing impairment grading system. As objective outcomes, word and sentence recognition scores (WRS, SRS) in quiet were measured at an individually determined most comfortable level. The SRS in noise were obtained at 0 dB signal-to-noise ratio. The Korean Evaluation Scale for Hearing Handicap questionnaire for non-hearing aid users was used to evaluate the effects of hearing status on social and psychological aspects. Results: Within the same grading of hearing impairment, listeners tended to show a large individual variability in speech-in-noise recognition and subjective hearing handicaps. Listeners with even mild impairment had more reductions in SRS in noise and more handicaps in an interpersonal relationship compared to normal-hearing listeners. Among the listeners with no impairment or mild hearing impairment, listeners who had poorer sentence-in-noise scores actually showed greater hearing handicaps. The sentence-in-noise scores plus WRS explained the subjective hearing handicap by about 40%. Conclusion: The elderly with normal hearing or mild hearing loss can have reduced communication abilities in background noise, resulting in a negative effect on their social and psychological aspects. It is recommended to conduct the sentence-in-noise intelligibility test and the subjective hearing handicap survey as a standard audiometric measures to confirm the functional communication problems for the elderly.
