Widespread Occurrence of a CYP51A Pseudogene in Calonectria pseudonaviculata
( Stefanos Stravoravdis ),( Nicholas R. Leblanc ),( Robert E. Marra ),( Jo Anne Crouch ),( Jonathan P. Hulvey ) 한국균학회 2020 Mycobiology Vol.48 No.1
Calonectria pseudonaviculata and C. henricotiae are two closely related fungal species responsible for boxwood blight disease of ornamental shrubs (Buxus spp.) in the U.S. and Europe. A previous study has shown isolates of the latter species, which is restricted to Europe, to be less sensitive to tetraconazole, an azole fungicide. In this study, we have analyzed the CYP51 paralogs for polymorphism in 26 genomes, representing geographically disparate populations of C. pseudonaviculata (n=19) and C. henricotiae (n=7), from the U.S., Europe, Asia, and New Zealand. The presence of a CYP51A pseudogene and lack of a functional CYP51A paralog in all C. pseudonaviculata genomes examined is a novel discovery for fungi and could have implications for the evolution of resistance to antifungal chemicals.
A shell-dynamics model for marine pipelines of large suspended length
Katifeoglou, Stefanos A.,Chatjigeorgiou, Ioannis K. Techno-Press 2015 Ocean systems engineering Vol.5 No.4
The present investigations introduce the shell-finite element discretization for the dynamics of slender marine pipelines. A long catenary pipeline, corresponding to a particular Steel Catenary Riser (SCR), is investigated under long-standing cyclic loading. The long structure is divided into smaller tubular parts which are discretized with 8-node planar shell elements. The transient analysis of each part is carried out by the implicit time integration scheme, within a Finite Elements (FE) solver. The time varying external loads and boundary conditions on each part are the results of a prior solution of an integrated line-dynamics model. The celebrated FE approximation can produce a more detailed stress distribution along the structural surface than the simplistic "line-dynamics" approach.
Isolation and Quantification of Glycosaminoglycans from Human Hair Shaft
( Eleni Maniatopoulou ),( Stefanos Bonovas ),( Nikolaos Sitaras ) 대한피부과학회 2016 Annals of Dermatology Vol.28 No.5
Background: There is evidence that glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are present in the hair shaft within the follicle but there are no studies regarding GAGs isolation and measurement in the human hair shaft over the scalp surface, it means, in the free hair shaft. Objective: The purpose of our research was to isolate and measure the total GAGs from human free hair shaft. Methods: Seventy-five healthy individuals participated in the study, 58 adults, men and women over the age of 50 and 17 children (aged 4∼9). GAGs in hair samples, received from the parietal and the occipital areas, were isolated with 4 M guanidine HCl and measured by the uronic acid-carbazole reaction assay. Results: GAGs concentration was significantly higher in the occipital area than in the parietal area, in all study groups. GAG levels from both areas were significantly higher in children than in adults. GAG levels were not associated with gender, hair color or type. Conclusion: We report the presence of GAGs in the human free hair shaft and the correlation of hair GAG levels with the scalp area and participants’ age. (Ann Dermatol 28(5) 533∼ 539, 2016)
THE STRENUOUS EFFECTS OF INNOVATION ON SERVICE EMPLOYEES
Vassiliki Grougiou,Stefanos Giannikis,Andreas Andronikidis 글로벌지식마케팅경영학회 2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07
Europe’s unfavorable economic environment demands extensive innovation from the services sector. Despite the benefits that innovations (i.e., constant emphasis on new ideas, risk-taking and proactiveness) may accrue, such as superior performance and competitive advantage, they can also bring about increased workload, work-related pressures and high levels of overall job stress for service employees. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of internal-external fit (Huselid, 1995) and the involvement approach (Boxall and Macky, 2014), and by adopting a service employee-centered perspective that is currently missing from the innovation, services, and management literature (Messersmith and Wales, 2013), we examine the impact of innovation on different types of job stressors in the services industry. Data was collected from 293 employees working in various managerial positions in the hospitality sector. All measures used were based on prior studies and were assessed for reliability using composite reliability (CR) and for validity using factor loadings and average variance extracted (AVE). A confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) tested the measurement of the model and Structural Equation Modeling was employed to examine the proposed relationships. We find that, in a highly innovative service work setting where employees are carefully selected, job positions are carefully designed and high-involvement employee practices are employed, service employees are less likely to report unclear job responsibilities, lack of resources and excessive work demands. While the effects of innovation on organizational performance have been extensively examined, there is scant evidence on the influence of organizational level innovativeness on non-financial outcomes such as employee outcomes (Wales, Gupta, and Mousa, 2013). This is despite the calls within the literature for more studies considering the central role of service employee attitudes and work behaviors in regard to productivity, job performance and turnover (Levy, 2003).

Objectives: By the end of the 2000s, the economic situation in many European countries started to deteriorate, generating financial uncertainty, social insecurity and worse health status. The aim of the present study was to investigate how the recent financial crisis has affected the lifestyle health determinants and behaviours of older adults living in the Mediterranean islands. Methods: From 2005 to 2015, a population-based, multi-stage convenience sampling method was used to voluntarily enrol 2749 older adults (50% men) from 20 Mediterranean islands and the rural area of the Mani peninsula. Lifestyle status was evaluated as the cumulative score of four components (range, 0 to 6), that is, smoking habits, diet quality (MedDietScore), depression status (Geriatric Depression Scale) and physical activity. Results: Older Mediterranean people enrolled in the study from 2009 onwards showed social isolation and increased smoking, were more prone to depressive symptoms, and adopted less healthy dietary habits, as compared to their counterparts participating earlier in the study (p<0.05), irrespective of age, gender, several clinical characteristics, or socioeconomic status of the participants (an almost 50% adjusted increase in the lifestyle score from before 2009 to after 2009, p<0.001). Conclusions: A shift towards less healthy behaviours was noticeable after the economic crisis had commenced. Public health interventions should focus on older adults, particularly of lower socioeconomic levels, in order to effectively reduce the burden of cardiometabolic disease at the population level.

Background: The management of feline hindlimb full-thickness skin defects is challenging. On the other hand, the use of a semitendinosus (ST) myocutaneous flap for their coverage has not been reported. Objectives: To describe the ST flap and compare it with second intention healing for managing hindlimb full-thickness skin defects. Methods: In 12 purpose-bred laboratory domestic short-haired cats, two wounds were made on each tibia. The wounds in group A (n = 12) were covered with ST flaps, and those in group B (n = 12) were left to heal by second intention. In both groups, clinical assessment scoring and planimetry were performed between one–30 d postoperatively. Computed tomography-angiography (CTA) was performed on days zero, 10, and 30, and histological examinations were performed on days zero and 14 and at 6 and 12 mon postoperatively. Results: Statistically significant differences in the clinical assessment scores were observed between groups A and B on days 14 (p = 0.046) and 21 (p = 0.016). On the other hand, the time for complete healing was similar in the two groups. CTA revealed significant differences in the muscle width (day 0 compared to days 10 and 30 [p = 0.001, p = 0.026, respectively], and days 10 to 30 [p = 0.022]), ST muscle density, and the caliber of the distal caudal femoral artery and vein (day 0 compared to day 10 [p < 0.001], and days 10 to 30 [p < 0.001]). Histologically significant differences in inflammation, degeneration, edema, neovascularization, and fibrosis were observed on day 14 compared to zero and 6 mon, but no differences were found between the time interval of 6 and 12 mon. Conclusions: An ST flap can be used effectively to manage hindlimb full-thickness skin defects.

Primary epiploic appendagitis is uncommon and is estimated to induce 1.1–1.3% of all abdominal pain. We report a 42-year-old male who appeared in the morning in the emergency department with abdominal pain localized in the right lower abdomen and associated with anorexia and nausea. Clinical examination, laboratory tests, and abdominal ultrasound revealed deep tenderness at Mc Burney point and a mild elevation of CRP (0.7 mg/dL). In the evening, the symptoms were exacerbated, and a diagnostic laparoscopy was performed. Intra-operatively, the appendix was normal and a twisted, necrotic epiploic appendage originating from the antimesenteric border of the mid ascending colon was found. Laparoscopic resection of the necrotic epiploic appendage and prophylactic appendectomy was carried out. Histology indicated the diagnosis of the necrotic epiploic appendage. Postoperatively, the patient recovered without complications. Although the preoperative diagnosis of primary epiploic appendagitis has improved due to abdominal ultrasound and mainly CT, there are still cases which are diagnosed during laparoscopy. The treatment of choice is conservative management, while the use of antibiotics remains controversial. The relapse and complication rates are rare. Surgical excision, particularly laparoscopic, should be considered in cases of uncertain diagnosis, persistent symptoms, or recurrence.
