Studies on the menthol producing enzymes in peppermint(Mentha piperita) leaves and suspension cells
Kim, Soo Un,Park, Si Hyung 한국농화학회 1992 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.35 No.5
Soluble enzyme extracts from peppermint leaves, treated with polystyrene resin, were incubated with unlabeled substrates and were subsequently assayed by using capillary gas-liquid chromatography. Enzyme extracts from peppermint mesophyll cells were shown to isomerize (-)-isopiperitenone to piperitenone. Enzyme extracts from peppermint epidermal cells converted (-)-isopipertenone to (+)-pulegone, (-)-menthone, (-)-menthol and piperitenone, and (+)-pulegone to (-)-menthone and (-)-menthol. However, enzyme extracts cells harvested from suspension culture and callus did not catalyze the conversion of (-)-isopiperitenone and (+)-pulegone to any other monoterpenes. We thus decided to examine the metabolic capability of the cultured cells of peppermint with whole intact cells by feeding several exogenous substrates to the suspension cultures. Conversion of (-)-limonene into any other monoterpenes was not observed with the suspension cultures. (+)-Pulegone and (-)-menthone were converted into (+)-isomenthone and (-)-menthol, respectively. The experiments confirmed that the suspension retained most of the menthol biosynthesis machinery in the cell except a few loci. (-)-Isopiperitenone was transformed into (-)-pulegone and two unidentified products. Their molecular weight was 166 and mass spectrum of one of the products was close to that of mintlactone. To confirm (-)-isopiperitenone was a precursor of the mintlactone-like compound, deuterium labeled (-)-isopiperitenone was fed to peppermint suspension cell cultures.

Fixed drug eruptions (FDE) are commonly reported type of mucocutaneous drug eruption. A 61 year old married male presented to our clinic with complaint of round erythematous, itchy patch on left hand dorsum with myalgia. On history taking, patient correlated episode with intake of an oral sex stimulant medication that he had procured over the counter (OTC) and we found that the medicine contained 30 mg of tadalafil along with herbal ingredients. A short course of oral corticosteroid therapy resulted in complete resolution of lesion leaving residual hyperpigmentation of the involved skin. Various ‘sex stimulant’ medicines with fancy names and attractive packaging are available over the counter. Most contain phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors in various strengths, often with herbal additions. These drugs are used erratically by the lay public, leads them to undergo side effects. Herein, we report rare case of fixed drug rash due to tadalafil, which we believe to be the first report in Korea.
Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis induced by digestive enzyme
( Soo Kyung Lee ),( Dong Joo Kim ),( Joong Heon Suh ),( Myoung Shin Kim ),( Un Ha Lee ) 대한피부과학회 2016 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.68 No.1
Acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP) is a widespread, pustular, cutaneous eruption commonly induced by drugs such as antibiotics. A 26-year-old Korean woman visited our clinic with multiple erythematous patches with pustules on trunk and extremities. She took drug that contains a group of digestive enzymes (consists of hemicellulase 50mg, pancreatin 210mg and ox bile dried extract powder 25mg) three times a day for two days due to gastrointestinal problem. Her laboratory examinations showed the elevation of white blood cells and neutrophils, and skin biopsy demonstrated subcorneal pustules and dermal perivascular inflammatory cell infiltrates. She diagnosed with AGEP and treated with oral corticosteroid, antihistamine and topical corticosteroid and fully recovered within two weeks. In summary, we report first documented case of an AGEP due to a digestive enzyme drug. Because of increasing use of digestive enzymes, clinicians should be aware of its potential of developing AGEP and be careful when using these kinds of drugs.
Herpes zoster with meningitis in a vaccinated, immunocompetent child
( Soo Kyung Lee ),( Dong Joo Kim ),( Joong Heon Suh ),( Myoung Shin Kim ),( Un Ha Lee ) 대한피부과학회 2016 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.68 No.1
Neurologic complications from varicella zoster virus (VZV) reactivation are rare and mainly reported in immunocompromised patients after reactivation of wild-type varicella-zoster virus. In this report, we describe a previously immunized healthy child who developed herpes zoster with meningitis. A 7-year-old boy visited our clinic with painful, itchy skin rash on left face, fever, headache, and vomiting. After admission, he showed meningeal irritation sign and lumbar puncture was performed. Cerebrospinal fluid examination showed an increased protein concentration (51 mg/dL), white blood cells (200 WBC/mm3, 98% lymphocytes) and VZV DNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction. A review of his immunization record showed a varicella vaccination at 1, 2months of age and the results of immunological screening for HIV, serum immunoglobulin and complement levels were unremarkable. Acyclovir was administered intravenously at a dose of 15 mg/kg every 8 hours for 10days and the patient’s clinical condition rapidly improved. Repeated CSF PCR for VZV converted to negative on hospital day 10, he was discharged and was asymptomatic with a normal physical examination at 3 weeks later. Vaccine strain VZV becomes currently important cause of herpes zoster and meningitis among immunized children, so we should aware varicella zoster vaccine have potential for reactivation and complications in both immunocompetent and immunocompromised hosts. The maritime industry has emerged as a new growth engine. The municipalities that own the port are trying to add value through the maritime industry. Overseas port cities are also creating maritime industrial clusters to generate profits and strengthen competitiveness. Therefore, it is very important to understand the comparative status of the domestic maritime industry by region. Based on this analysis, it is possible to establish maritime industrial clusters and strategies for integration. This study analyzed the structure of the maritime industry located in Jeollanamdo province, the southwestern part of Korea. Through the analysis of existing literature, the maritime industry was reclassified into 5 major categories, 21 subcategories, and 84 subcategories. Based on the reclassified maritime industry, the analysis of the Jeollanamdo province maritime industry was based on applying the location quotient and the shift-share analysis. As a result of analyzing the geographical location of Jeollanamdo province, other industries showed the highest value of 2.790, followed by fisheries (2.227), shipbuilding industry (1.164) and marine tourism industry (0.554). The growth effect of the maritime industry in Jeollanamdo province was 35,323 people, and net growth effect excluding national growth effect was 11,945 people. In particular, the net growth effect of the shipbuilding industry was the highest at 11,320, followed by shipping logistics (6,371) and marine tourism (1,529). On the other hand, there was no net growth effect in fisheries. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the construction of the maritime industrial cluster for Jellanamdo province in the future.

Kim, Dong-Hun,Cho, Soo-Hyun,Kim, Jin-Hyoung,Seong, Pil-Nam,Lee, Jong-Moon,Jo, Cheor-Un,Lim, Dong-Gyun Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resource 2009 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.29 No.4
In this study, the quality of chicken breasts from organically reared chickens was compared with that of chicken breasts from conventionally reared chickens. Broilers were raised in an indoor pen with conventional and organic production system, respectively. The diet formulation for the organically reared chickens and the production density were in accordance with the guidelines for organic chicken products. Twenty birds from each group were slaughtered and their breasts were obtained for analysis. The organic chicken breasts had a higher cooking loss, and waterholding capacity, and a lower shear force (p<0.05) compared to the conventional chicken breasts. The organic chicken breasts also showed higher $a^{\ast}$ and $b^{\ast}$ values and myoglobin contents compared with the conventional chicken breasts (p<0.05). In the fatty-acid analysis, the organic chicken breasts resulted in higher polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and unsaturated fatty acid contents, and a higher PUFA-saturated fatty acid ratio.
