Wang, Jian-Tao,Chang, Li-Ming,Song, Xin,Zhao, Li-Xin,Li, Jun-Tao,Zhang, Wei-Guo,Ji, Ying-Bin,Cai, Li-Na,Di, Wei,Yang, Xin-Yu Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.22
Purpose: To compare tumor size by mammography and sonography and align with pathological results in primary breast cancer cases. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 95 primary breast cancer patients who underwent mammography and sonography from January 2011 to June 2012. The largest tumor diameter was chosen as sizing reference for each imaging modality. The measurements of mammography and sonography were considered concordant if they were within the measurement of pathological results ${\pm}0.5cm$. Pearson's correlation coefficient was calculated for imaging results. Results: The range of the maximum diameter was 0.6cm-10.5cm and mean value was $3.81{\pm}2.04cm$ by pathological results, 0.7cm-12.4 cm and $3.99{\pm}2.19cm$ by mammography, and 0.9cm-11.0cm and $3.63{\pm}2.01cm$ by sonography, respectively. Sonography (R: 0.754), underestimated tumor size, but had a better correlation with pathological tumor size compared to mammography (R: 0.676), which overestimated tumor size. Conclusions: Sonography is superior to mammography in assessment of primary breast cancer.

This study proposes an inverse methodology for determining the strain hardening behaviors at large deformation of titanium alloys using uniaxial tensile and notched tests with finite element analysis. Various hardening laws and data fitting range are considered to characterize the stress-strain relationships of commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) and Ti6Al4V alloys which can increase the flexibility of identifying the proper models. A new hybrid HHSL hardening model is presented for CP-Ti and its parameters are obtained by iteratively minimizing the difference between the finite element simulation and experimental data. The hardening behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy is predicted by the weighted HSV model. The results show that mechanical response and loading curves from the identified numerical models are consistent with the experimental results of titanium alloys, demonstrating the validity and effectiveness of the proposed inverse approach in practical use.

Hao Zhang,Tao Gao,Chang Xu,Lingyu Zhao,Haipeng Song,Ganyun Huang 대한금속·재료학회 2023 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.29 No.10
The deformation and failure of Ti6Al4V produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) under tensile and shear stress states have been experimentally investigated with different types of the samples. The digital image correlation (DIC) method was applied to observe the deformation, crack initiation and propagation behavior. The effects of building direction on the mechanical behavior were studied. The experimental results show that the yield strength and tensile strength of SLM manufactured Ti6Al4V along the build direction is slightly lower than the horizontal one, but the vertical samples have a higher ductility than horizontal samples. Fractographic analyses were conducted to investigate the damage mechanism and fracture mode of Ti6Al4V under different loading conditions. The defects and stress states have a significant influence on damage and failure behaviors of addictively manufactured Ti6Al4V alloy. The tensile stress tends to open up the defects in the vertically built specimen while the defects tend to be closed in the horizontally built specimen due to the building orientation. The nucleation, growth and coalescence of micro voids are the main damage mechanism of SLM fabricated Ti6Al4V alloy under tensile loading condition, and the void shearing mechanism dominates the failure of shear samples.

The 14-3-3 proteins are highly conserved, ubiquitous molecules involved in a variety of biologic phenomena, such as cell cycle control, and apoptosis. However, their expression in cholangiocarcinoma has not been previously characterized. In this paper, immunohistochemistry using specific anti-14-3-3 monoclonal antibodies was performed on formalin-fixed;, paraffin embedded archival tissue from 86 patients of cholangiocarcinoma. We also examined the correlation between expression and survival rate and clinicopathologic factors such as tumor location, tumor size, pathologic differentiation, lymphatic permeation, lymph node metastasis, and tumor stage. Positive 14-3-3 proteins expression was observed for 6 isoforms (${\beta}$, ${\sigma}$, ${\gamma}$, ${\theta}$, ${\delta}$, ${\eta}$) of these proteins in 86 patients of cholangiocarcinoma. ${\beta}$ and ${\sigma}$ isoform immunoreactivity was correlated with lymph node metastasis, tumor stage and patients' survival rate. In addition, ${\delta}$ isoform immunoreactivity showed trends with tumor location, tumor size, pathologic differentiation and tumor stage, while the ${\theta}$ isoform was correlated with pathologic differentiation. These results indicated that upregulated expression of some isoforms of 14-3-3 may be a common mechanism for evading apoptosis in cholangiocarcinoma, so that targeting 14-3-3 may be a novel promising strategy for the treatment of this tumor.

Zhang, Hui-Qing,Lian, Chang-Hong,Ping, Yao-Dong,Song, Wen-Bin,Lu, Qing-Pu,Xie, Shu-Zhe,Lin, Tao,Cheng, Lin-Zhong Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.19
Purpose: This systematic analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy and safety of pemetrexed based salvage chemotherapy for treatment of patients with metastatic colorectal cancer. Methods: Clinical studies evaluating the efficacy and safety of pemetrexed based regimens on response and safety for patients with colorectal cancer were identified using a predefined search strategy. Pooled response rates (RRs) were calculated. Results: For pemetrexed based regimens, 4 clinical studies including 201 patients with advanced colorectal cancer were considered eligible for inclusion. The analysis suggested that, in all patients, pooled RR was 20.4% (41/201). Major adverse effects were neutropenia, anorexia, fatigue, and anemia. No treatment related death occurred with pemetrexed based treatment. Conclusion: This systematic analysis suggests that pemetrexed based regimens are associated with mild activity with good tolerability in treating patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Uniformity is a key feature of state-of-the-art infrared focal planed array (IRFPA) and infrared imaging system. Unlike traditional infrared telescope facility, a ground-based infrared radiant char- acteristics measurement system with an IRFPA not only provides a series of high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) infrared image but also ensures the validity of radiant measurement data. Normally, a long integration time tends to produce a high SNR infrared image for infrared radiant charac- teristics radiometry system. In view of the variability of and uncertainty in the measured target's energy, the operation of switching the integration time and attenuators usually guarantees the gual- ity of the infrared radiation measurement data obtainted during the infrared radiant characteristics radiometry process. Non-uniformity correction (NUC) coecients in a given integration time are often applied to a specified integration time. If the integration time is switched, the SNR for the infrared imaging will degenerate rapidly. Considering the effect of the SNR for the infrared image and the infrared radiant characteristics radiometry above, we propose a-wide-dynamic-range NUC algorithm. In addition, this essasy derives and establishes the mathematical modal of the algorithm in detail. Then, we conduct verification experiments by using a ground-based MWIR(Mid-wave Infared) radiant characteristics radiometry system with an 400 mm aperture. The experimental results obtained using the proposed algorithm and the traditional algorithm for different integration time are compared. The statistical data shows that the average non-uniformity for the proposed algorithm decreased from 0.77% to 0.21% at 2.5 ms and from 1.33% to 0.26% at 5.5 ms. The testing results demonstrate that the usage of suggested algorithm can improve infrared imaging quality and radiation measurement accuracy.

Background and Objectives: Gastric acid reflux is known to be the most important cause of contact granuloma. Therefore, anti-gastric acid reflux medication has been used as the first line treatment although there are other treatment methods such as surgery or steroid injections. Actually, the role of surgery in the treatment of contact granuloma has not been established clearly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of surgical treatment for contact granuloma. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 14 patients who were diagnosed with contact granuloma and treated with surgery from 2011 to July 2016 at Hanyang University hospital. Results: Of 14 patients, 9 (64.3%) were male and 5 (27.4%) were female. The mean age was 53.8 (± 6.1) years. The main symptoms were voice change followed by globus, dyspnea, and asymptomatic. Mean Reflux Finding Score (RFS) before surgery was 13.5 and mead Reflux Symptom Index (RSI) was 10.4. The causes of surgery were inadequate response to proton pump inhibitor (PPI) in 4 cases, airway obstruction with large granuloma in 8 cases, and differential diagnosis in 2 cases. Of 14 patients, recurrence occurred in 8 (53.3%) patients after surgery. In 8 recurrent cases, 5 patients showed complete remission and 3 patients showed partial remission with PPI medication. Conclusion: The role of surgery in the treatment of contact granuloma might be limited due to high recurrence

Abstract

The mechanical performance of a composite bone plate made of a glass/polypropylene (Twintex) for the biologic fixation of diaphyseal long bone fractures was investigated in this paper. To find out the most appropriate forming condition of the composite bone plate, tensile and bending tests and microscopic observations of the specimens fabricated by various forming conditions were carried out. The measured mechanical properties, the morphology of the material cross-section, the fibre volume fractions, etc., were mutually correlated, and the results were used for determining the most appropriate forming condition. An environmental test of composite bone plates under a simulated human body also was carried out using the fabricated composite bone plate. The material degradation according to the water-exposure time was quantitatively investigated by a four-point bending test. Finally, the serviceability of the proposed composite bone plate was verified by fatigue tests.

Pyruvate kinase isozyme type M2 (PKM2) was first found in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), and its expression has been thought to correlate with prognosis. A large number of studies have demonstrated that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a crucial event in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and associated metastasis, resulting in enhanced malignancy of HCC. However, the roles of PKM2 in HCC EMT and metastasis remain largely unknown. The present study aimed to determine the effects of PKM2 in EGF-induced HCC EMT and elucidate the molecular mechanisms in vitro. Our results showed that EGF promoted EMT in HCC cell lines as evidenced by altered morphology, expression of EMT-associated markers, and enhanced invasion capacity. Furthermore, the present study also revealed that nuclear translocation of PKM2, which is regulated by the ERK pathway, regulated ${\beta}$-catenin-TCF/LEF-1 transcriptional activity and associated EMT in HCC cell lines. These discoveries provide evidence of novel roles of PKM2 in the progression of HCC and potential therapeutic target for advanced cases.
