Emulsification followed by freezing and thawing cycles was applied to produce poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) microparticles and to simultaneously immobilize activated sludge. Activity of the obtained microparticles (~400 μm in diameter) was evaluated in glucose syrup solutions and heat-pretreated wastewater from a starch factory by measurements of permanganate index (CODMn) reduction. The reaction followed first-order kinetics, revealing slight mass transfer limitations in PVA microparticles as determined from the kinetic rate constant that was ~35% lower than that in the freely suspended activated sludge culture. Yet, efficiency of the microparticles increased almost five-fold in a laboratory airlift bioreactor operating either in batch or continuous regimes. Over 19 days of operation under high organic loadings in the industrial wastewater (~100 kgCOD m−3 d−1), PVA microparticles (12.4% volume fraction) remained active and induced a decrease of over 90% of biodegradable CODMn at the hydraulic retention time of 8 h.

Series of imino and amino derivatives of 4-hydroxy coumarins were synthesized via conventional and microwave promoted procedure and evaluated for antioxidant potential through different in vitro models such as (DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, linoleic acid emulsion model system, reducing power assay and phosphomolybdenum method. All prepared compounds possess good antioxidant activity and among them p-nitro-phenyl derivative 6c with IC50 at 25.9 μM possesses radical scavenging activity which is comparable to standard BHT, while the best reducing power was observed in a case of benzyl amino compound 8c (RP50 255.6 μM). Also, observed data indicated that compounds may serve as inhibitors of lipid peroxidation process.
Aerodynamic design and analysis of a small-scale vertical axis wind turbine
Jelena Svorcan,Slobodan Stupar,Dragan Komarov,Ognjen Peković,Ivan Kostić 대한기계학회 2013 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.27 No.8
Small-scale vertical axis wind turbines are regarded today as an attractive source of green energy, still insufficiently implemented and tested. This paper presents a fast design methodology of such a VAWT, in terms of choosing its main parameters: airfoil, rotor diameter and solidity. For obtaining generated power of each considered geometrical model at different undisturbed wind velocities and rotor angular velocities two models were used - momentum and vortex-wake model, combined with experimentally measured airfoil data (airfoil lift and drag coefficients). Even though the former model is simpler, it is the most utilized model, known to provide good results in stationary working regimes. Both models still present fairly accurate and fast tools for computation and optimization, particularly useful in the phase of conceptual design. In this research, the use of the momentum model resulted in determination of the maximal power coefficient,optimal- and minimal freestream velocity for every considered VAWT model. From these output parameters, a selection of the optimal geometric model was done, and a more detailed transient analysis and flow representation around the selected solution was obtained by the vortex-wake model. The results obtained by the two used computational models coincide satisfactorily.
Isogeometric bending analysis of composite plates based on a higher-order shear deformation theory
Ognjen Peković,Slobodan Stupar,Aleksandar Simonović,Jelena Svorcan,Dragan Komarov 대한기계학회 2014 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.28 No.8
This research paper presents an isogeometric plate finite element formulation for analysis of thick composite plates. Isogeometric finiteelement method which is based on non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) basis functions, is a novel numerical procedure developedto bridge the gap between CAD and FEM modeling of structures. In order to investigate the behavior of isogeometric plate elementsunder static loading, plate kinematics is based on third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) of Reddy, which is free from transverseshear locking. This paper discusses accurate transverse stress recovery procedures for TSDT isogeometric finite elements. Numericalexperiments with quadratic, cubic and quartic elements are presented and obtained results are compared to other available ones.

The chemical composition of essential oils obtained from the roots, stems, and leaves of Ballota nigra, growing in Serbia, was investigated by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses. Kovats indices, mass spectra, and standard compounds were used to identify a total of 115 individual compounds. The plant produces two types of essential oils. Oils derived from stems and leaves were sesquiterpene rich (78.17% and 88.40%, respectively), containing principally β-caryophyllene, germacrene D, and α-humulene, present in appreciable amounts. In contrast, oil derived from the root was dominated by p-vinylguiacol (9.24%), borneol (7.51%), myrtenol (7.13%), trans-pinocarveol (5.22%), pinocarvone (4.37%), 2-methyl-3-phenylpropanal (4.32%), and p-cymen-8-ol (4.30%). Essential oil obtained from the roots was evaluated for the antimicrobial activity against seven bacterial species and one fungi.
Systematic Approach for Variable Selection in the Weather Generator Model
Hyung-Il Eum,Slobodan P,Simonovic 한국방재학회 2016 Journal of Disaster Management Vol.1 No.3
This study provides an analytical procedure for selecting variables for the Weather Generator (WG) model to be used in the assessment of climatic change impacts at a local scale. The approach integrates the K-NN technique with the Principle Component Analysis (PCA), termed of WG-PCA. The Upper Thames River Basin in South-Western Ontario, Canada is selected as a case study. The outcome of the WG model includes 38 years of synthetically generated data. In the study we tested three models: (a) the WG-1Var employing only one variable (precipitation); (b) WG-3Var employing three variables (precipitation, maximum temperature, and minimum temperature); and (c) WG-PCA. The simulation results indicate that WG models employing three variables (WG-3Var and WG-PCA) produce the meteorological variables with better temporal and spatial correlation compared to the WG-1Var. More notable result is that the WG-PCA employing only the first principle component provides the comparable results to those of WG-3Var and much better results than WG-1Var.
