        Ligandless palladium supported on SiO2–TiO2 as effective catalyst for Suzuki reaction

        TiO2–SiO2 mixed oxides were prepared by the homogeneous precipitation method, and the supports were characterized by XRD, IR and BET. Ligandless palladium supported on SiO2–TiO2 was prepared by the deposition–precipitation method and used as recoverable catalyst for Suzuki reactions. The results revealed that the supported catalyst Pd/SiO2–TiO2 exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the coupling of aryl bromides with arylboronic acid, and also exhibitedmoderate catalytic activity for the coupling of aryl chlorides. The catalyst was recycled by simple filtration and reused without further disposal, no significant Pd leaching and loss of catalytic activity was observed except the first reuse.

        Improving electrochemical performance of LiMnPO_4 by Zn doping using a facile solid state method

        Olivine structure LiMnPO_4/C as cathode materials for Li-ion batteries were synthesized via a simple solidstate reaction. Improvement of the electrochemical performance of LiMnPO_4/C cathode material was realized significantly by the method of doping Zn. The obtained LiMn_(0.95)Zn_(0.05)PO_4/C electrode material was studied by the measurements of X-ray diffraction pattern, scanning electronic microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical performance. The results indicate that the LiMn_(0.95)Zn_(0.05)PO_4/C materials exhibit discharge specific capacity of 140.2 mA h g^(−1) at 0.02 C rate and better rate capability. These excellent results are elucidated by EIS test, which showed that there was the decrease of charge transfer resistance and faster lithium-ion diffusion in LiMnPO_4/C cathode materials after Zn doping.

        Social Darwinism, status ranking, and creativity in Confucian-heritage education: Dialectics between education and knowledge economies

        Education and national economies bear a dialectic relation with each other in societies moving toward a knowledge economy: Education has become a key instrument in the service of economic agendas; it is itself transformed by them. Social Darwinism and hierarchical status ranking are two potent forces operating in the process of transformation. They act in unison to pressurize Confucian-heritage education. Relying on methodological relationalism as analytic framework, we point to adverse consequences of status ranking, discuss difficulties and contradictions in the promotion of creativity, and identify examination superstition as antagonistic to the goal of reforming education. We plead for teachers’ battling for greater autonomy from political control and active participation in articulating educational values beyond those of economic and business agendas. Finally, we list two fundamental values for guiding education: (a) well-being above achievement, and (b) cooperation above competition.

        Relationships Among Character Strengths, Self-efficacy, Social Support, Depression, and Psychological Well-being of Hospital Nurses

        Purpose: From the perspective of positive psychology, our study aimed to explore depressive symptoms and psychological well-being among Chinese nurses, as well as analyze the impacts of character strengths, self-efficacy and social support on the mental health of nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive design using five self-reported questionnaires was used to investigate a cohort of 4238 nurses during 2018. A structural equation modeling analysis was used to verify a hypothetical model linking character strengths, self-efficacy, social support, depressive symptoms, and psychological well-being. Results: The prevalence of depression among this cohort of Chinese nurses was 58.1%. The mean scores for caring, inquisitiveness, and self-control were 19.93 (SD ¼ 2.82), 15.94 (SD ¼ 3.00), and 16.34 (SD ¼ 2.95), respectively. The hypothesized model was a good fit of the data (c2/df ¼ 1.77, p ¼ .183, root mean square error of approximation ¼ 0.04, goodness of fit index ¼ 1.00, comparative fit index ¼ 1.00, TuckereLewis index ¼ 1.00). Except for the path from self-control to depression, the other hypothetical paths investigated were statistically significant. Conclusion: Character strengths were directly and positively associated with psychological well-being. Inquisitiveness was the strongest direct protective factor for depression. In addition, character strengths indirectly alleviated depression and increased psychological well-being through mediating variables of social support and self-efficacy. This study should alert nurse managers that more attention should be paid to the character strengths and mental health of nurses. This study provides evidence for interventions based on character strengths as a management strategy to support the mental health of nurses.
