Cognitive and Affective Perspective-Taking Ability of Young Bilinguals in South Korea
Han, Sinae,Lee, Kangyi Korean Association of Child Studies 2013 Child studies in Asia-Pacific context Vol.3 No.1
The present study examined balanced bilingual children's cognitive and affective perspective-taking and compared them to that of monolingual children. A total of 133 children aged 4 to 5 years and consisting of 73 Korean-English bilinguals and 60 Korean monolinguals were tested with cognitive perspective-taking and affective perspective-taking tasks. Balanced bilinguals were screened through general language ability tests in both English and Korean. Participant backgrounds were collected through a parent questionnaire. Results showed significant differences in affective perspective-taking between bilingual and monolingual children, demonstrating that bilingual children outperformed monolingual children. Although there was no difference in cognitive perspective-taking between bilinguals and monolinguals, the result showed that children's cognitive perspective-taking ability develops with age. This study provides basic information about bilingual children's perspective-taking ability and their bilingual advantage.

Recently, a new severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) (B.1.1.529) Omicron variant originated from South Africa in the middle of November 2021. SARS-CoV-2 is also called coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) since SARS-CoV-2 is the causative agent of COVID-19. Several studies already suggested that the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant would be the fastest transmissible variant compared to the previous 10 SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern, interest, and alert. Few clinical studies reported the high transmissibility of the Omicron variant but there is insufficient time to perform actual experiments to prove it, since the spread is so fast. We analyzed the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant, which revealed a very high rate of mutation at amino acid residues that interact with angiostatin-converting enzyme 2. The mutation rate of COVID-19 is faster than what we prepared vaccine program, antibody therapy, lockdown, and quarantine against COVID-19 so far. Thus, it is necessary to find better strategies to overcome the current crisis of COVID-19 pandemic.

Bone tissue defects caused by trauma and disease are significant problems in orthopedic surgery. Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) hold great promise for the treatment of bone tissue disease in regenerative medicine. In this study, we have established an effective method for the differentiation of osteogenic cells derived from hESCs using a lentiviral vector containing the transcription factor Cbfa1. Differentiation was initiated in embryoid body formation of Cbfa1-expressing hESCs, resulting in a highly purified population of osteogenic cells based on flow cytometric analysis. These cells also showed characteristics of osteogenic cells in vitro, as determined by reverse-transcription (RT)-polymerase chain reaction and immunocytochemistry using osteoblast-specific markers. We also evaluated the regenerative potential of Cbfa1-expressing cells derived from hESCs (hESC-CECs) compared with hESCs and the osteogenic effects of bone morphogenic protein-2 (BMP2) encapsulated in thermoreversible hydrogel in vivo. hESC-CECs were embedded in hydrogel constructs enriched with BMP2 to promote bone regeneration. We observed prominent mineralization and the formation of nodule-like structures using von Kossa and alizarin red S staining. In addition, the expression patterns of osteoblast-specific genes were verified by RT-polymerase chain reaction, and immunohistochemical analysis revealed that collagen type 1 and Cbfa1 were highly expressed in hESC-CECs compared with other cell types. Taken together, our results suggest that encapsulation of hESC-CECs with BMP2 in hydrogel constructs appears to be a promising method to enhance the in vitro osteoblastic differentiation and in vivo osteogenic activity of hESC-CECs.

Flexible tactile sensors have been intensively studied for healthcare and electronic skin devices. Currently, a sensing material, electrode, and substrate are manufactured as one set by depositing the sensing material on the electrode. For this reason, when another electrode or substrate is used in the sensor or when different sensor characteristics are required, a new sensing material must be developed and the fabrication conditions should be changed. This study proposes a novel method of manufacturing a pressure sensing material like a cartridge film. The cartridge film is made by filling the holes of a stencil film (one MP in each hole) with conductive microparticles (MPs). Using the cartridge film, the sensing material can be cut-and-pasted on electrodes and transferred to other electrodes for reuse. This study analyzes the electrical responses of the sensors made of the cartridge film on the basis of the Hertzian contact theory, and also correlates the sensing performance of the sensors with the conductivity of the MPs and the degree of protrusion of the MPs from the stencil surface.
[FIG OMISSION]

확률론적 지진재해도 분석을 위한 단층지진원의 지진발생율 산정
박제찬(Jechan Park),유현재(Hyun Jae Yoo),한신애(Sinae Han),서경한(Kyunghan Seo),이상선(Sang-Sun Lee) 대한지질학회 2021 대한지질학회 학술대회 Vol.2021 No.10
