Femtosecond laser-assisted selective reduction of neovascularization in rat cornea

        Sidhu, Mehra S.,Choi, Min-Yeong,Woo, Suk-Yi,Lee, Hyun-Kyu,Lee, Heung-Soon,Kim, Kyu-Jin,Jeoung, Sae Chae,Choi, Jun-Sub,Joo, Choun-Ki,Park, Il-Hong Springer London 2014 LASERS IN MEDICAL SCIENCE Vol.29 No.4

<P>Nonlinear multiphoton absorption induced by focusing near infrared (NIR) femtosecond (fs) laser pulses into a transparent cornea allows surgery on neovascular structures with minimal collateral damage. In this report, we introduce an fs laser-based microsurgery for selective treatment of rat corneal neovascularizations (in vivo). Contiguous tissue effects are achieved by scanning a focused laser pulse below the corneal surface with a fluence range of 2.2–8.6 J/cm2. The minimal visible laser lesion (MVL) threshold determined over the corneal neovascular structures was found to be 4.3 J/cm2. Histological and optical coherence tomography examinations of the anterior segment after laser irradiations show localized degeneration of neovascular structures without any unexpected change in adjacent tissues. Furthermore, an approximately 30 % reduction in corneal neovascularizations was observed after 5 days of fs laser exposure. The femtosecond laser is thus a promising tool for minimally invasive intrastromal surgery with the aid of a significantly smaller and more deterministic photodisruptive energy threshold for the interaction between the fs laser pulse and corneal neovascular structures.</P>

Unrelated Question Model in Sensitive Multi-Character Surveys

Sidhu, Sukhjinder Singh,Bansal, Mohan Lal,Kim, Jong-Min,Singh, Sarjinder The Korean Statistical Society 2009 Communications for statistical applications and me Vol.16 No.1

The simplicity and wide application of Greenberg et al. (1971) prompts to propose a set of alternative estimators of population total for multi-character surveys that elicit simultaneous information on many. sensitive study variables. The proposed estimators take into account the already known rough value of the correlation coefficient between Y(the characteristic under study) and p(the measure of size). These estimators are biased, but it is expected that the extent of bias will be smaller, since the proposed estimators are suitable for situations in between those optimum for the usual estimators and the estimators based on multi-characters for no correlation. The relative efficiency of the proposed estimators has been studied under a super population model through empirical study. It has been found through simulation study that a choice of an unrelated variable in the Greenberg et al. (1971) model could be made based on its correlation with the auxiliary variable used at estimation stage in multi-character surveys.

A Modern Automatic Bus Transfer Scheme

Sidhu Tarlochan S.,Balamourougan Vinayagam,Thakur Manish,Kasztenny Bogdan Institute of Control 2005 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.3 No.S

The proliferation of technology has made global conduction of business increasingly dependent upon the availability of reliable power. As a result, alternate power systems are being installed and expanded to protect the broadening scope of critical electrical loads. Bus transfer restores designated critical loads to an alternate source when utility derived service becomes inadequate or goes out of service due to any contingency. This paper describes the practices, requirements and implementation of bus transfer of motor loads to an alternate source of power. A new high-speed automatic bus transfer scheme is proposed which includes the development of a new algorithm for determining the type of bus transfer required and the realization of the scheme by using modem protection devices and intra-substation communication facilities.

An Iterative Technique for Real-Time Tracking of Power System Harmonics

Sidhu, T.S.,Zadeh, M.R.D.,Pooranalingam, P.J.,Oh, Yong-Taek The Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers 2011 Journal of Electrical Engineering & Technology Vol.6 No.3

An iterative technique based on orthogonal filters and frequency tracking is proposed to estimate harmonic components in power systems. The technique uses frequency interpolation to estimate fundamental frequency and harmonics when the nominal frequency of the signal is a non-integer value. Due to the number of computations involved during the generation of filter coefficients, an offline computation is suggested. Beneficial features of the proposed technique include fixed sampling rate and fixed data window size. The performance of the proposed technique is examined by simulating different power system operating conditions and evaluating the data from these simulations. A technique based on Fast Fourier Transform is also used to estimate the harmonic components for all the simulated signals. These estimates are compared with those obtained from the proposed technique. Results show that the proposed technique can converge to the accurate fundamental frequency and therefore, provide accurate harmonic components even when the fundamental frequency is not equal to the nominal frequency.

Electroacupuncture-Assisted Craniotomy on an Awake Patient

        Amritpal Sidhu,Trushna Murgahayah,Vairavan Narayanan,Hari Chandran,Vicknes Waran 사단법인약침학회 2017 Journal of Acupuncture & Meridian Studies Vol.10 No.1

Although acupuncture has existed for over 2000 years, its application as an anesthetic aid began in the 1950s in China. The first surgical procedure performed under acupuncture anesthesia was a tonsillectomy. Soon thereafter, major and minor surgical procedures took place with electroacupuncture alone providing the anesthesia. The procedures performed were diverse, ranging from cardiothoracic surgery to dental extractions. Usage of acupuncture anesthesia, specifically in neurosurgery, has been well documented in hospitals across China, especially in Beijing, dating back to the 1970s. We present a case of a 65-year-old man who presented with right-sided body weakness. He had a past medical history of uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea requiring use of a nasal continuous positive airway pressure device during sleep. We performed a computed tomography brain scan, which revealed a left-sided acute on chronic subdural hemorrhage. Due to his multiple comorbidities, we decided to perform the surgical procedure under electroacupuncture anesthesia. The aim of this case report is to describe a craniotomy performed under electroacupuncture on an elderly patient with multiple comorbidities who was awake during the procedure and in whom this procedure, if it had been performed under general anesthesia, would have carried high risk.

Beneficial Effects of Emblica officinalis in L-Arginine-Induced Acute Pancreatitis in Rats

        Shabir Sidhu,Promila Pandhi,Samir Malhotra,Kim Vaiphei,Kundal Lal Khanduja 한국식품영양과학회 2011 Journal of medicinal food Vol.14 No.1

Acute necrotizing pancreatitis is characterized by focal macroscopic or diffuse necrosis, hemorrhage, and vascular thrombosis of the pancreas. Current treatment options are limited to supportive and symptomatic interventions. A large amount of experimental work is ongoing to identify novel therapeutic agents for acute pancreatitis. The present study was carried out to explore the beneficial effects of Emblica officinalis, a medicinal plant of India, on acute pancreatitis. Ascorbic acid is one of the major chemical components of E. officinalis, so a vitamin C group was included for comparison. Acute pancreatitis was induced by l-arginine. Rats were divided into the following groups: control (saline), arginine+saline, arginine+E. officinalis, and arginine+vitamin C. Animals in each group were sacrificed at 24 hours and 3, 14, and 28 days after pancreatitis induction for determination of biochemical parameters and histological examination. For rate of DNA synthesis and immunohistochemical studies, animals were sacrificed on Day 3 and Day 7. Drug administration was started 2 hours after the last arginine injection and continued until the day of sacrifice. E. officinalis treatment was found to be beneficial for treating acute pancreatitis. Serum levels of lipase and interleukin-10 were significantly lower than in the arginine group. Nucleic acid content, rate of DNA synthesis, pancreatic proteins, and pancreatic amylase content were significantly improved. Histopathological examination showed significantly lower total scores in the Emblica group. Vitamin C was found to be less efficacious than E. officinalis for all outcome parameters. Thus E. officinalis treatment was found to be beneficial in acute necrotizing pancreatitis.

On the Use of Flyash-Lime-Gypsum (FaLG) Bricks in the storage facilities for low level Nuclear Waste

        Baltej Singh Sidhu,A.S. Dhaliwa,K.S. Kahlon,Suhkpal Singh 한국원자력학회 2022 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.54 No.2

In the present study, radiation shielding and protection ability of prepared Flyash-lime-Gypsum (FaLG)bricks has been studied in terms of energy exposure build up factors and dose parameters. The energyexposure build up factors of Flyash-lime-Gypsum (FaLG) bricks have been calculated for the energy rangeof 0.015 MeVe15 MeV and for penetration depth upto 40 mfp directly using a new and simplifiedPiecewise Linear Spline Interpolation Method (PLSIM). In this new method, the calculations of G.P fittingparameters are not required. The verification and accuracy of this new method has been checked bycomparing the results of exposure build up factor for NBS concrete calculated using present method withthe results obtained by using G.P fitting method. Further, the relative dose distribution and reducedexposure dose rate for various radioactive isotopes without any shielding material and with Flyash-limeGypsum (FaLG) bricks have been calculated in the energy range of 59.59e1332 keV. On the basis of theobtained results, it has been reported that the prepared Flyash-lime-Gypsum (FaLG) bricks possesssatisfactory radiation shielding properties and can be used as environmentally safe storage facilities forlow level nuclear waste

Optoperforations of Retinal Blood Vessels in an Intact Porcine Eye by Using a Femtosecond Laser-assisted Microsurgery System

        M. S. Sidhu,Suk-Yi Woo,Wan Kee Kim,Heung Soon Lee,J. S. Yahng,Kyu Jin Kim,Sae Chae Jeoung,Hyun Kyu Lee 한국물리학회 2011 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.58 No.6

Femtosecond (fs) laser microsurgery is a powerful method for its potential to treat various retinal diseases, as well as to study the sub-cellular functions, because of its capability to selectively ablate a specific target (in vitro and in vivo) with minimal damage to the surrounding tissues. Here, we develop an fs-laser based microsurgery system, along with ophthalmoscope-assisted dynamic optical imaging system, for retinopathy treatment. The system is equipped with a galvano-scanner and a real-time imaging system. The laser system used for the current study consists of a regenerative amplified Ti-sapphire (λ = 810 nm) laser, delivering a 150-fs pulse at a repetition rate of 1 kHz. The illumination light from a white light-emitting diode (LED) was optically filtered to be maximally absorbed by blood, which allowed us to effectively differentiate the blood vessels from the retina surface. The estimated threshold fluences for inner limiting membrane (ILM) ablation and the primary blood vessel wall perforations within an intact porcine eye were found to be 2.6 ± 0.2 J/cm^2 and 5.0 ± 0.1 J/cm^2, respectively. The present work should be an important step in ongoing exploration of the use of femtosecond lasers for the purpose of treating retinal blood vessels.
