Robotics in Cervical Spine Surgery: Feasibility and Safety of Posterior Screw Placement

        Lu-Ping Zhou,Zhi-Gang Zhang,Dui Li,Shu Fang,Rui Sheng,Ren-Jie Zhang,Cai-Liang Shen 대한척추신경외과학회 2023 Neurospine Vol.20 No.1

Objective: Robot-assisted (RA) techniques have been widely investigated in thoracolumbar spine surgery. However, the application of RA methods on cervical spine surgery is rare due to the complex morphology of cervical vertebrae and catastrophic complications. Thus, the feasibility and safety of RA cervical screw placement remain controversial. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility and safety of RA screw placement on cervical spine surgery. Methods: A comprehensive search on PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase Database, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Databases, and Wanfang Database was performed to select potential eligible studies. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs), comparative cohort studies, and case series reporting the accuracy of cervical screw placement were included. The Cochrane risk of bias criteria and Newcastle-Ottawa Scale criteria were utilized to rate the risk of bias of the included literatures. The primary outcome was the rate of cervical screw placement accuracy with robotic guidance; subgroup analyses based on the screw type and insertion segments were also performed. Results: One RCT, 3 comparative cohort studies, and 3 case series consisting of 160 patients and 719 cervical screws were included in this meta-analysis. The combined outcomes indicated that the rates of optimal and clinically acceptable cervical screw placement accuracy under robotic guidance were 88.0% (95% confidence interval [CI], 84.1%–91.4%; p = 0.073; I 2 = 47.941%) and 98.4% (95% CI, 96.8%–99.5%; p = 0.167; I2 = 35.954%). The subgroup analyses showed that the rate of optimal pedicle screw placement accuracy was 88.2% (95% CI, 83.1%–92.6%; p = 0.057; I2 = 53.305%); the rates of optimal screw placement accuracy on C1, C2, and subaxial segments were 96.2% (95% CI, 80.5%–100.0%; p = 0.167; I2 = 44.134X%), 89.7% (95% CI, 80.6%–96.6%; p = 0.370; I2 = 0.000X%), and 82.6% (95% CI, 70.9%–91.9%; p = 0.057; I2 = 65.127X%;), respectively. Conclusion: RA techniques were associated with high rates of optimal and clinically acceptable screw positions. RA cervical screw placement is accurate, safe, and feasible in cervical spine surgery with promising clinical potential.

      • Angelica Sinensis Polysaccharide Induces Erythroid Differentiation of Human Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia K562 Cells

        Wang, Lu,Jiang, Rong,Song, Shu-Dan,Hua, Zi-Sen,Wang, Jian-Wei,Wang, Ya-Ping Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.9

Leukemia is a clonal disorder with blocked normal differentiation and cell death of hematopoietic progenitor cells. Traditional modalities with most used radiation and chemotherapy are nonspecific and toxic which cause adverse effects on normal cells. Differentiation inducing therapy forcing malignant cells to undergo terminal differentiation has been proven to be a promising strategy. However, there is still scarce of potent differentiation inducing agents. We show here that Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP), a major active component in Dong quai (Chinese Angelica sinensis), has potential differentiation inducing activity in human chronic erythro-megakaryoblastic leukemia K562 cells. MTT assays and flow cytometric analysis demonstrated that ASP inhibited K562 cell proliferation and arrested the cell cycle at the G0/G1 phase. ASP also triggered K562 cells to undergo erythroid differentiaton as revealed by morphological changes, intensive benzidine staining and hemoglobin colorimetric reaction, as well as increased expression of glycophorin A (GPA) protein. ASP induced redistribution of STAT5 protein from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. Western blotting analysis further identified that ASP markedly sensitized K562 cells to exogenous erythropoietin (EPO) by activating EPO-induced JAK2/STAT5 tyrosine phosphorylation, thus augmenting the EPO-mediated JAK2/STAT5 signaling pathway. On the basis of these findings, we propose that ASP might be developed as a potential candidate for chronic myelogenous leukemia inducing differentiation treatment.

      • Anti-Diabetic Medications Do Not Influence Risk of Lung Cancer in Patients with Diabetes Mellitus: a Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Nie, Shu-Ping,Chen, Hui,Zhuang, Mao-Qiang,Lu, Ming Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.16

Objectives: Several preclinical and observational studies have shown that anti-diabetic medications (ADMs) may modify the risk of lung cancer. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis evaluating the effect of metformin, sulfonylureas (SUs), thiazolidinediones (TZDs), and insulin on the risk of lung cancer in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). Materials and Methods: We conducted a systematic search of Pubmed and Web of Science, up to August 20, 2013. We also searched the Conference Proceedings Citation Index (CPCI) and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) for abstracts from major meetings. Fixed or random effect pooled measures were selected based on heterogeneity among studies, which was evaluated using Q test and the I2 of Higgins and Thompson. Meta-regression was used to explore the sources of between-study heterogeneity. Publication bias was analyzed by Begg's funnel plot and Egger's regression test. Associations were assessed by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: A total of 15 studies (11 cohort, 4 case-control) were included in this meta-analysis. In observational studies no significant association between metformin (n=11 studies; adjusted OR=0.99, 95%CI: 0.87-1.12), SUs (n=5 studies; adjusted OR=0.98, 95%CI: 0.79-1.22), or TZDs (n=7 studies; adjusted OR=0.92, 95%CI: 0.75-1.13), insulin (n=6 studies; adjusted OR=1.13, 95%CI: 0.79-1.62) use and risk of developing lung cancer was noted. There was considerable inherent heterogeneity between studies not explained by study design, setting, or location. Conclusions: Meta-analysis of existing studies does not support a protective or harmful association between ADMs use and risk of lung cancer in patients with DM. There was considerable heterogeneity across studies, and future, well-designed, prospective studies would be required for better understanding of any association.

Regeneration of commercial SCR catalyst deactivated by arsenic poisoning in coal-fired power plants

        Qiang Lu,Zulfiqar Ali,Hao Tang,Tahir Iqbal,Zulqarnain Arain,Min-shu Cui,Ding-jia Liu,Wen-yan Li,Yong-ping Yang 한국화학공학회 2019 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.36 No.3

Arsenic species, which are inevitable components in flue gas from the coal combustion process, will result in severe deactivation of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to regenerate the arsenic-poisoned commercial V2O5-MoO3/TiO2 catalyst collected from coal-fired power plants, including ammonia washing, H2 reduction, and air calcination. Activity tests indicated that the proposed method could recover the catalyst activity more than 96% of the fresh catalyst. Furthermore, detailed characterizations results indicated that this regeneration method could not only effectively remove the arsenic species, but also recover the active constituents of the catalysts to a considerable level. The proposed method offers a feasible strategy for the regeneration of poisoned commercial SCR catalysts and can effectively reduce the total denitrification cost for coal-fired power plants.

      • The XRCC1 Arg280His Gene Polymorphism and Hepatocellular Carcinoma Risk: A Meta-analysis

Li, Lu-Ping,Wu, Wei,Li, Xing-Hai,Song, Shu-Sen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.3

Many studies have suggested that the XRCC1 Arg280His gene polymorphism might be involved in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the results have been inconsistent. In this study, the authors performed a meta-analysis to assess the association between XRCC1 Arg280His and HCC susceptibility. Published literature from PubMed, EMBASE and CNKI Data was searched. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using fixed- or random-effects models when appropriate. Begg's test was used to measure publication bias. A total of 7 case-control studies covering 1,448 HCC cases and 1,544 controls were included. No significant variation in HCC risk was detected in any of the genetic models overall. In the stratified analysis, four studies with sample sizes over 300 produced similar results. The corresponding pooled ORs were not substantially altered after the exclusion of three studies deviating from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in the control group, which indicated reliability for our meta-analysis results.

Experimental Study on the Motion Process of Radial Retractable Roof Structures

        JinYu Lu,Jie Liao,Gan-Ping Shu,Tao Zhang 한국강구조학회 2016 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.16 No.4

In recent years, the use of retractable roofs is increasing to meet the demand of holding big-scale events. This article introduces a class of radial retractable roofs based on the foldable bar structure (FBS) mechanism. A radial retractable roof structure whose moveable section consisted of 6 segments and 6 rigid linkages was designed with appropriate parameters. An experimental study of a radial retractable roof was carried out. A scale model with a 3 metre diameter was constructed to study the roof deflection and vibration during the deployment process under four different load cases. Furthermore, based on the multi-flexible body dynamics theory, an ADAMS-ANSYS co-simulation was applied to simulate the motion process of the radial retractable roof structure. The experimental results were consistent with the numerical simulations. This indicates that the dynamic and fluctuation phenomena of structural behaviour are universal. The structural vibration was increased with the increase of external loads, and the vibration amplitude increased significantly when the roof was starting and braking. With the closing of the movable roof, the deflection of the fixed roof increased significantly. In the motion process, the bending moment of the fixed roof gradually increases, while that of the moving roof varies little. Vertical vibration is significant in the motion process by reason of the complex wheel-rail contact.

Synthesis and Curing of AUT-PNIMMO with Three Functional Groups

        Xiaochuan Wang,Ping Li,Xianming Lu,Hongchang Mo,Minghui Xu,Ning Liu,Yuanjie Shu 한국고분자학회 2019 폴리머 Vol.43 No.4

T-PNIMMO with three functional groups was synthesized by cationic ring opening polymerization of NIMMO (3-nitratomethyl-3-methyloxetane) in the presence of TMP (trimethylolpropane) catalyzed by BF3·OEt2. Then AUTPNIMMO was synthesized by T-PNIMMO and allyl isocyanate. The polymers were characterized by FTIR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and their thermal stability was estimated by DSC. Moreover, tensile testing was used to evaluate the mechanical properties of polyurethane elastomer based on T-PNIMMO and toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI), and isoxazoline elastomer based on AUT-PNIMMO and tetramethyl-terephthalobisnitrile oxide (TTNO). This showed an increase of tensile strength from 2.0 to 4.0 MPa and elongation at break from 150% to 500%, respectively. These results indicated that AUTPNIMMO exhibited a good thermal stability, had satisfactory mechanical properties and was expected to be used in the composite solid propellant and polymer bonded explosives.

Strength of Double Skin Steel-Concrete Composite Walls

        Ying Qin,Gan-Ping Shu,Shenggang Fan,JinYu Lu,Shi Cao,Jian-Hong Han 한국강구조학회 2017 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.17 No.2

Double skin steel-concrete composite walls have been increasingly used in civil engineering applications. However, the advantages of these walls have not been fully recognized due to the lack of appropriate technical guidelines for capacity design. In this paper, the local buckling strength of steel plate were firstly reviewed in terms of specifications incorporated in several modern codes. A methodology to predict the strength of steel plate with restraint of both concrete and shear studs was proposed based on the explicit solution for local buckling of steel plate in composite shear walls subjected to uniform axial compression and with elastically rotational restraint at loaded and unloaded edges. The results were compared with various previous experimental data and good agreement was observed. Furthermore, the load carrying capacity of composite walls was derived from the superposition of the contribution of steel plate and concrete. The predicted values from the proposed equations, together with the resulted determined from modern codes, were compared with the experimental results. It was found that both the proposed method and JEAG 4618 offer reasonable predictions while AISC 360 and KEPIC-SNG always underestimate the actual values.
