Room-temperature 2 μm luminescence from Tm doped silicon light emitting diodes and SOI substrates

Room temperature electroluminescence in the eye safe region of the spectrum over the range 1.7–2.1 μm is demonstrated from a thulium doped silicon diode. The same room temperature photoluminescence can be attained on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. The emission lines are from the first excited to ground state of the Tm3+ ion, 3F4→3H6. A detailed study has been made to establish the optimum implant and processing conditions for efficient room temperature luminescence. The importance of the correct placement of the thulium ions with respect to the depletion region edge and dislocation loops formed upon boron implantation has been established. Tm3+ has been demonstrated to lase in other systems and is the basis of widely applied, commercial, optically pumped 2 μm lasers. The demonstration of electroluminescence in silicon and luminescence on an SOI platform are necessary prerequisites for the potential development of Tm injection lasers and optical amplifiers.

The effects on cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, of supplementing the benchmark larval feeding formula with branched‐chain amino acids (BCAAs) were analyzed. The results show that supplementary BCAAs can increase adult longevity, and are conducive to improving development and reproductive capacity. In particular, by supplementing the ration with the three proteinogenic BCAAs at concentrations ten times that of the benchmark formula, all the selected physiological indices of cotton bollworm health were improved. The larval duration, pupae weight, pupation rate, fecundity and adult longevity for specimens fed the supplemented formula were 15.8 days, 0.348 g, 100%, 1340.7 eggs and 27.3 days, respectively. The same indicators for larvae fed the benchmark formula were 16.6 days, 0.306 g, 97.9%, 1167.0 eggs and 12.0 days, respectively. This study provides a reference for future research on amino acid supplementation and increasing lifespans

This paper proposes a defl ectable switched reluctance motor/generator, which can be used in wave energy conversion and underwater propulsion systems. When an underwater vehicle stops working, the ocean current drives the turbine blades connected to the motor to rotate, and the rotating turbine blades drive the defl ectable generator shaft to generate electricity. The defl ectable motor can complete multi-degree-of-freedom motion, so it can receive ocean current energy in multiple directions, thereby improving energy extraction effi ciency. When the underwater vehicle starts to work, the defl ectable motor can freely adjust the course of the vehicle, so that the vehicle can yaw freely under water. The fi nite element method is used to analyze the air gap fl ux density during rotation and defl ection. The relationship between the fl ux, torque and current of a single coil under diff erent rotor positions is obtained, and then the output current and voltage of the defl ectable generator are obtained. Finally, a prototype was made for experimental verifi cation.

This work aims at developing an approach to poly(acrylic acid)/cerium ions (PAA/cerium ions) double network hydrogels and exploring the self-healing properties of the hydrogels, with expectation to provide some clues for constructing new healable gel actuators and enrich the family of self-healable hydrogels. The hydrogel is covalently crosslinked by a traditional crosslinking agent N,N'-methylene bis-acrylamide to form the first network and further physically crosslinked by the ionic interaction between cerium ions and the carboxyl groups in the hydrogel network. The preparation method and self-healing behaviors of the hydrogels are investigated.
A New Calculation Method for Tunneling-Caused Stratum Settlement

To improve the prediction accuracy for the stratum settlement induced by tunnels and obtain a theoretical method for determining the influence radius of settlement, a new empirical formula for the surface settlement curve is proposed in this study, and the slice method is introduced into the calculation of the influence radius of settlement. It is assumed that the disturbance boundary of the tunnel is a circular arc surface, the disturbed soil is divided into multiple slices, and the sliding force and resistance on the circular arc are obtained through a stress analysis of the slices. An arc with the same values of the sliding force and resistance can be determined as the actual disturbance boundary of the overlying strata as formed by the subsurface tunneling. On this basis, the influence radius of settlement and maximum settlement at different depths can be determined, and the settlement curve can be depicted by substituting the influence radius and maximum settlement into the expression of the settlement curve. The rationality of the proposed method is verified based on four sets of measured data. The surface settlement curves and the settlements at different depths on the center line of the tunnel obtained by the new method are generally consistent with the measured data.
