Environmental education is usually taught across the curriculum in most of the countries. This teaching approach has been a challenge for teachers to implement it especially in the Malaysian curriculum context. Thus, science teachers require effectual Pedagogical Content Knowledge of Environmental Education (PCK-EE). The purpose of this study was to explore the influence of teaching option and teaching experience on science teachers` PCK-EE. Five components of PCK-EE were investigated in this study, which were: a) knowledge of curriculum, b) knowledge of content, c) knowledge of student, d) knowledge of teaching strategies, and e) knowledge of evaluation. 347 secondary science teachers from the state of Selangor have participated in this survey study. The questionnaire used had 60 items. The findings revealed teaching option has a significant influence on science teachers`` knowledge of content (p=0.000); knowledge of student (p=0.000) and knowledge of teaching strategies (p=0.016). In the case of teaching experience, it was found that there is a low correlation on knowledge of content (r=0.174) and knowledge of evaluation (r=0.170) only. Implication of this study leads to the suggestion in enhancing teachers`` service training to improve their PCK-EE and subsequently their ability in teaching environmental education across curriculum.
Assessing the children’s views on foods and consumption of selected food groups
Sharifah Intan Zainun Sharif I,Shamarina Shohaimi,Mirnalini Kandiah 한국영양학회 2013 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.7 No.2
The food choices in childhood have high a probability of being carried through into their adulthood life, which then contributes to the risk of many non-communicable diseases. Therefore, there is a need to gather some information about children’s views on foods which may influence their food choices for planning a related dietary intervention or programme. This paper aimed to explore the views of children on foods and the types of foods which are usually consumed by children under four food groups (snacks, fast foods, cereals and cereal products; and milk and dairy products) by using focus group discussions. A total of 33 school children aged 7-9 years old from Selangor and Kuala Lumpur participated in the focus groups. Focus groups were audio-taped, transcribed and analyzed according to the listed themes. The outcomes show that the children usually consumed snacks such as white bread with spread or as a sandwich, local cakes, fruits such as papaya, mango and watermelon, biscuits or cookies, tea, chocolate drink and instant noodles. Their choices of fast foods included pizza, burgers, French fries and fried chicken. For cereal products, they usually consumed rice, bread and ready-to-eat cereals. Finally, their choices of dairy products included milk, cheese and yogurt. The reasons for the food liking were taste, nutritional value and the characteristics of food. The outcome of this study may provide additional information on the food choices among Malaysian children, especially in urban areas with regard to the food groups which have shown to have a relationship with the risk of childhood obesity.
Halal Certification: A Viewpoint From Malaysian Restaurant Managers
Marzuki, Sharifah Zannierah Syed Kyung Hee University Management Research Institute 2016 Asia pacific journal of business review Vol.1 No.1
This study focuses on halal certification from the viewpoint of Malaysian restaurant managers. The increasing demand of halal food from the Muslim and non-Muslim consumers has given a good indicator to the hospitality industry to have the eating establishments halal certified. A sample of 643 restaurant managers has been selected throughout Malaysia using systematic sampling. Questionnaires were distributed using mail survey and data was then entered to SPSS version 21 for further analysis. It is gathered from the descriptive statistics that cleanliness during food preparation, meaning of halal and halal certification is important when dealing with food in a Malaysian restaurant setting. The results indicated that restaurant managers have high expectations toward halal certification. Furthermore, halal certification does generate some benefits beyond religion that contribute to Malaysia's positioning as a tourism destination and global halal hub.
A systematic review of emotion recognition using cardio-based signals
Sayed Ismail Sharifah Noor Masidayu,Ab. Aziz Nor Azlina,Ibrahim Siti Zainab,Mohamad Mohd Saberi 한국통신학회 2024 ICT Express Vol.10 No.1
There is a growing demand for emotion recognition systems (ERS) to be adopted in everyday life from various fields, particularly automotive, education, and social security. Recently, the use of cardio-based physiological signals, electrocardiogram (ECG), and photoplethysmogram (PPG) in ERS has yielded promising results. Furthermore, the development of wearable devices equipped with cardio-based physiological sensors has significantly aided towards the adoption of ERS in daily life. This paper systematically reviews emotion recognition using cardio-based physiological signals, encompassing emotion models, emotion elicitation methods, and ERS development methods, emphasizing feature extraction, feature selection methods, feature dimension reduction methods, and classifiers. A summary and comparison of recent studies are presented to highlight existing studies’ gaps and suggest future research for better ERS especially using cardio-based signals.
Sulaiman, Suhaina,Shahril, Mohd Razif,Wafa, Sharifah Wajihah,Shaharudin, Soraya Hanie,Hussin, Sharifah Noor Akmal Syed Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.14
Background: Dietary carbohydrate, fiber and sugar intake has been shown to play a role in the etiology of breast cancer, but the findings have been inconsistent and limited to developed countries with higher cancer incidence. Objective: To examine the association of premenopausal and postmenopausal breast cancer risk with dietary carbohydrate, fiber and sugar intake. Materials and Methods: This population based case-control study was conducted in Malaysia with 382 breast cancer patients and 382 controls. Food intake pattern was assessed via an interviewer-administered food frequency questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to compute odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) and a broad range of potential confounders were included in analysis. Results: A significant two fold increased risk of breast cancer among premenopausal (OR $Q_4$ to $Q_1$=1.93, 95%CI: 1.53-2.61, p-trend=0.001) and postmenopausal (OR $Q_4$ to $Q_1$=1.87, 95%CI: 1.03-2.61, p-trend=0.045) women was observed in the highest quartile of sugar. A higher intake of dietary fiber was associated with a significantly lower breast cancer risk among both premenopausal ($ORQ_4$ to $Q_1$=0.31, 95%CI: 0.12-0.79, p-trend=0.009) and postmenopausal ($ORQ_4$ to $Q_1$=0.23, 95%CI: 0.07-0.76, p-trend=0.031) women. Conclusions: Sugar and dietary fiber intake were independently related to pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer risk. However, no association was observed for dietary carbohydrate intake.
Multicasting Multiple Description Coding Using p-cycle Network Coding
( Ali Farzamnia ),( Sharifah K. Syed-yusof ),( Norsheila Fisal ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2013 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.7 No.12
This paper deliberates for a multimedia transmission scheme combining multiple description coding (MDC) and network coding (NC). Our goal is to take advantage from the property of MDC to provide quantized and compressed independent and identically distributed (iid) descriptions and also from the benefit of network coding, which uses network resources efficiently to recover lost data in the network. Recently, p-cycle NC has been introduced to recover and protect any lost or distorted descriptions at the receiver part exactly without need of retransmission. So far, MDC have not been explored using this type of NC. Compressed and coded descriptions are transmitted through the network where p-cycle NC is applied. P-cycle based algorithm is proposed for single and multiple descriptions lost. Results show that in the fixed bit rate, the PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) of our reconstructed image and also subjective evaluation is improved significantly compared to previous work which is averaging method joint with MDC in order to conceal lost descriptions.
The Impact of Agile Methodology on Software Team’s Work-Related Well-Being
Mazni Omar,Sharifah Lailee Syed Abdullah 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.9 No.3
Agile methodology is people-oriented. However, little evidence demonstrates the methodology effectiveness on humanistic aspects. Work-related well-being is measured to what extent the agile methodology can give impact on anxiety, contentment, depression, and enthusiasm level among software engineering (SE) teams. This paper aims to investigate empirically the effect of agile methodology on software development team’s work-related well-being. To achieve this goal, a comparison study was carried out in an academic setting. A quantitative approach using statistical analysis was used to investigate the effect. Results showed that agile does not significantly affect work-related well-being. Nonetheless, the team that is able to apply the agile practices as closely as possible experienced higher level of enthusiasm during software project. This study provides additional empirical data in software engineering research and practices specifically on human aspects. Further investigation needs to be carried out on the software projects with higher task complexity.
Enhanced FCME Thresholding for Wavelet-Based Cognitive UWB over Fading Channels
Haleh Hosseini,Norsheila Fisal,Sharifah Kamilah Syed-Yusof 한국전자통신연구원 2011 ETRI Journal Vol.33 No.6
The cognitive ultra-wideband (UWB) network detects interfering narrowband systems and adapts its configuration accordingly. An inherently adaptive and flexible candidate for cognitive UWB transmission is the wavelet packet multicarrier modulation (WPMCM). In this letter, we use an enhanced forward consecutive mean excision thresholding algorithm to tackle the noise uncertainty in the wavelet-based sensing of WPMCM systems, and mathematical analysis is performed for primary user channel fading. As a benchmark, we compare the proposed system with a conventional fast Fourier transformation-based system, and performance investigation proves significant improvements when primary and secondary links are subjected to multipath fading and noise.
