Synthesis of some novel adsorbents for antimicrobial activity and removal of arsenic from drinking water

        Hafiz Badaruddin Ahmad,Gul E Yasmin,Shafique Ahmad Arain,Ijaz Ahmad Bhatti,Mazhar Hussain 한국화학공학회 2015 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.32 No.4

Arsenic contamination in drinking water is alarming for human beings; especially for those people whouse ground water directly for drinking purposes. Attempts were made to design adsorbents for the removal of arsenic. Silica gel has been tested as adsorbent for such removal. After optimizing concentration, time and amount of adsorbent,Langmuir, Freundlich and D-R isotherms are drawn to determine different parameters for the evaluation of arsenicadsorption. Kinetics of adsorption is also calculated by using pseudo first order and pseudo second order rate equations. Zerovalent iron and manganese nanoparticles have been coated on silica gel and efficiency of removal of arsenichave been determined. Iron and manganese particles have been stabilized with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). Similarly mixturesof iron-silver and manganese-silver nanoparticles have been synthesized by stabilizing with PVA, which show betterefficiency than individual nanoparticles of iron and manganese coated silica gel. The newly synthesized adsorbentsare very much effective for not only arsenic but also for antimicrobial activity. Concentration of arsenic in water hasbeen determined spectrophotometrically using variamine blue as indicator.

Behavioral and Histologic Neuroprotection of Aqueous Garlic Extract After Reversible Focal Cerebral Ischemia

        Fakhrul Islam,Sofiyan Saleem,Muzamil Ahmad,Abdullah Shafique Ahmad,Seema?ousuf,Mubeen Ahmad Ansari,M. Badruzzaman Khan,Tauheed Ishrat 한국식품영양과학회 2006 Journal of medicinal food Vol.9 No.4

The objective of the present study was to investigate the effects of aqueous garlic extract (AGE) on neurobe-havioral activities, malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels, glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathionereductase (GR), glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and sodium-potassium ATPase (Na. ,K. -ATPase) activities, and glutamate and aspartate content in a middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion(MCAO) model of acute cerebral ischemia in rats. The right MCA of male Wistar rats was occluded for 2 hours using intra-luminal 4-0 monofilament, and reperfusion was allowed for 22 hours. MCAO caused significant depletion in GSH and its dependent enzymes (GPx, GR, and GST) and significant elevation of MDA, glutamate, and aspartate. The activities of Na. ,K. -ATPase, SOD, and CAT were decreased significantly by MCAO. The neurobehavioral activities (grip strength, spontaneousmotor activity, and motor coordination) were also decreased significantly in the MCAO group. All of the alterations inducedby ischemia were significantly attenuated by pretreatment with AGE (500 mg/mL/kg of body weight, i.p.) 30 minutes beforethe induction of MCAO and correlated well with histopathology by decreasing the neuronal cell death following MCAO andreperfusion. These findings suggest that AGE effectively modulates neurobehavioral and neurochemical changes in focal is-chemia, most probably by virtue of its antioxidant properties.

Effect of Saffron (Crocus sativus) on Neurobehavioral and Neurochemical Changes in Cerebral Ischemia in Rats

        Fakhrul Islam,Sofiyan Saleem,Muzamil Ahmad,Abdullah Shafique Ahmad,Seema Yousuf,Mubeen Ahmad Ansari,M. Badaruzzaman Khan,Tauheed Ishrat 한국식품영양과학회 2006 Journal of medicinal food Vol.9 No.2

The modifying effects of Crocus sativus(CS) stigma extract on neurobehavioral activities, malondialdehyde(MDA), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione S-transferase, superoxide dis-mutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and Na. ,K. -ATPase activities, and glutamate (Glu) and aspartate (Asp) content were exam-ined in the middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion (MCAO) model of acute cerebral ischemia in rats. The right MCA ofmale Wistar rats was occluded for 2 hours using intraluminal 4-0 monofilament, and reperfusion was allowed for 22 hours.MCAO caused significant depletion in the contents of GSH and its dependent enzymes while significant elevation of MDA,Glu, and Asp. The activities of Na. ,K. -ATPase, SOD, and CAT were decreased significantly by MCAO. The neurobehav-ioral activities (grip strength, spontaneous motor activity, and motor coordination) were also decreased significantly in theMCAO group. All the alterations induced by ischemia were significantly attenuated by pretreatment of CS (100 mg/kg ofbody weight, p.o.) 7 days before the induction of MCAO and correlated well with histopathology by decreasing the neuronalcell death following MCAO and reperfusion. The present results may suggest the effectiveness of CS in focal ischemia mostprobably by virtue of its antioxidant property.

      • Phishing Attacks and Defenses

Junaid Ahsenali Chaudhry,Shafique Ahmad Chaudhry,Robert G. Rittenhouse 보안공학연구지원센터 2016 International Journal of Security and Its Applicat Vol.10 No.1

A phishing attack is a method of tricking users into unknowingly providing personal and financial information or sending funds to attackers. The most common phishing attacks use some form of electronic messaging such as email to provide a link to what appears to be a legitimate site but is actually a malicious site controlled by the attacker. Phishing is a hybrid attack combining both social engineering and technological aspects and combatting phishing attacks requires dealing with both aspects

Structural and magnetic studies on Zr doped ZnO diluted magnetic semiconductor

        G. Murtaza,R. Ahmad,M.S. Rashid,M. Hassan,A. Hussnain,Muhammad Azhar Khan,M. Ehsan ul Haq,M.A. Shafique,S. Riaz 한국물리학회 2014 Current Applied Physics Vol.14 No.2

In this study, Zirconium doped Zn1xZrxO (with x ¼ 0.00e0.10) samples have been prepared by formal solid-state reaction technique. The Zr doped ZnO samples annealed at 1100 C and characterized by different characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The Xray diffraction (XRD) used to study the structural properties. XRD pattern showed that lattice parameters, “a”, “c”, unit cell volume and ZneO bond length increase with doping content (x 0.04) where as these decrease with x > 0.04. On the other hand, reverse trend observed with lattice distortion. The crystallite size decreases with increasing doping content of Zr. FTIR employed to investigate functional chemical bonding properties of different elements and compounds present in materials. The low, medium and high frequency absorption bands observed at 630, 1500 and 3435 cm1, which were the common features of ZneO, HeOeH and OeH bond respectively. SEM used to study surface morphology and measured grain size of specimen. The surface becomes dense and grain size decreases with increasing degree of Zr contents. The SEM micrograph also shows the presence of spherical micro size particles and formation of pores in samples. Magnetic properties were obtained using VSM. The samples exhibit room temperature ferromagnetism. The magnetic hysteresis loops show variation in the value of magnetic parameter. The saturation magnetization (Ms) and coercivity (Hc) decrease, while remanence magnetization (Mr) shows gradually increasing trend with Zr content. VSM measurement reveals that sample Zn0.96Zr0.4O show better result as compared to x ¼ 0.06e0.10.

      • Call for a Computer-Aided Cancer Detection and Classification Research Initiative in Oman

Mirzal, Andri,Chaudhry, Shafique Ahmad Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.5

Cancer is a major health problem in Oman. It is reported that cancer incidence in Oman is the second highest after Saudi Arabia among Gulf Cooperation Council countries. Based on GLOBOCAN estimates, Oman is predicted to face an almost two-fold increase in cancer incidence in the period 2008-2020. However, cancer research in Oman is still in its infancy. This is due to the fact that medical institutions and infrastructure that play central roles in data collection and analysis are relatively new developments in Oman. We believe the country requires an organized plan and efforts to promote local cancer research. In this paper, we discuss current research progress in cancer diagnosis using machine learning techniques to optimize computer aided cancer detection and classification (CAD). We specifically discuss CAD using two major medical data, i.e., medical imaging and microarray gene expression profiling, because medical imaging like mammography, MRI, and PET have been widely used in Oman for assisting radiologists in early cancer diagnosis and microarray data have been proven to be a reliable source for differential diagnosis. We also discuss future cancer research directions and benefits to Oman economy for entering the cancer research and treatment business as it is a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide.

RPSMDSM: Residential Power Scheduling and Modelling for Demand Side Management

( Sheeraz Ahmed ),( Ali Raza ),( Shahryar Shafique ),( Mukhtar Ahmad ),( M. Yousaf Ali Khan ),( Asif Nawaz ),( Rohi Tariq ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2020 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.14 No.6

In third world countries like Pakistan, the production of electricity has been quickly reduced in past years due to rely on the fossil fuel. According to a survey conducted in 2017, the overall electrical energy capacity was 22,797MW, since the electrical grids have gone too old, therefore the efficiency of grids, goes down to nearly 17000MW. Significant addition of fossil fuel, hydro and nuclear is 64.2%, 29% and 5.8% respectively in the total electricity production in Pakistan. In 2018, the demand crossed 20,223MW, compared to peak generation of 15,400 to 15,700MW as by the Ministry of Water and Power. Country faces a deficit of almost 4000MW to 5000MW for the duration of 2019 hot summer term. Focus on one aspect considering Demand Side Management (DSM) cannot oversea the reduction of gap between power demand and customer supply, which eventually leads to the issue of load shedding. Hence, a scheduling scheme is proposed in this paper called RPSMDSM that is based on selection of those appliances that need to be only Turned-On, on priority during peak hours consuming minimum energy. The Home Energy Management (HEM) system is integrated between consumer and utility and bidirectional flow is presented in the scheme. During peak hours of electricity, the RPSMDSM is capable to persuade less power consumption and accomplish productivity in load management. Simulations show that RPSMDSM scheme helps in scheduling the electricity loads from peak price to off-peak price hours. As a result, minimization in electricity cost as well as (Peak-to-Average Ratio) PAR are accomplished with sensible waiting time.
