        This paper compared the properties of cosmetics depending on the shopping tendency of female consumers in Korea and China. The data on Chinese women living in Korea and Korean women in their 20s was collected using an offline survey. The data on Chinese women living in China in their 20s was collected using an online survey. Three hundred twenty-seven questionnaires out of a total of 330 questionnaires were used for statistical analysis. The survey was conducted from January to February 2014. Eighteen questions on shopping tendency and eight questions on the properties of cosmetics were analyzed using a 5-point Likert scale. Data was analyzed by Descriptives, Factor Analysis, Reliability Analysis, ANOVA and Cluster Analysis, and SPSS 21 statistical program. In accordance with the analyses, the shopping tendency comprised a showing-off tendency, pleasure-seeking tendency, and practicality tendency; the properties of cosmetics were classified into conformity and functionality. On the basis of the elements in the shopping tendency, the female consumers were categorized into a low involvement consumer group, high involvement consumer group, and hedonic consumer group. The Chinese women emphasized conformity or functionality of cosmetics more than the Korean women regardless of the countries where they lived. Regardless of shopping types or countries where they lived, the Korean and Chinese women in their 20s emphasized functionality over conformity of cosmetics. Furthermore, Chinese women living in Korea showed a similar shopping tendency to Chinese living in China.

        Frequency in Sound Change: Data from Mandarin

        The relationship between frequency and sound change has been a source for debate in the literature. This study focuses on two kinds of opposing sound changes, strengthening and weakening sound changes, so as to better understand the role of frequency in sound change. Strengthening and weakening sound changes are respectively exemplified by diphthongization and palatalization in Mandarin here. The statistical analysis results for this study show that frequency is positively associated with both sound change processes, while the frequency change factor is positively related with diphthongization and negatively associated with palatalization. The claim in previous studies that it is either high frequency or low frequency words that lead sound change has been rejected by this study. The frequency change factor, which almost no work has investigated, shows different mechanisms in different kinds of sound change.

        Study on the response surface optimization of online upgrading of bio-oil with MCM-41 and catalyst durability analysis

        Direct catalysis of vapors from vacuum pyrolysis of biomass was performed on MCM-41 to investigate the effects of operating parameters including catalyzing temperature, catalyzing bed height and system pressure on the organic yields. Optimization of organic phase yield was further conducted by employing response surface methodology. The statistical analysis showed that operating parameters have significant effects on the organic phase yield. The organic phase yield first increases and then decreases as catalyzing temperature and catalyzing bed height increase, and decreases as system pressure increases. The optimal conditions for the maximum organic phase yield were obtained at catalyzing temperature of 502.7℃, catalyzing bed height of 2.74 cm and system pressure of 6.83 kPa, the organic phase yield amounts to 15.84% which is quite close to the predicted value 16.19%. The H/C, O/C molar ratios (dry basis), density, pH value, kinematic viscosity and high heat value of the organic phase obtained at optimal conditions were 1.287, 0.174, 0.98 g/cm3, 5.12, 5.87 mm2/s and 33.08 MJ/kg, respectively. Organic product compositions were examined using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry and the analysis showed that the content of oxygenated aromatics in organic phase had decreased and hydrocarbons had increased, and the hydrocarbons in organic phase were mainly aliphatic hydrocarbons. Besides, thermo-gravimetric analysis of the MCM-41 zeolite was conducted within air atmosphere and the results showed that when the catalyst continuously works over 100 min, the index of physicochemical properties of bio-oil decreases gradually from 1.15 to 0.45, suggesting that the refined bio-oil significantly deteriorates. Meanwhile, the coke deposition of catalyst increases from 4.97% to 14.81%, which suggests that the catalytic activity significantly decreases till the catalyst completely looses its activity.

      • Chinese Domestic Housing Policies

        The increasing integration of the globalized financial market and real estate has resulted in growing levels of international investment in property markets. Particularly, in recent years, it has been observed that investors from China have become increasingly active in global real estate markets, which has been widely criticized to exacerbate existing affordability pressures in recipient nations. Though general explanations for the phenomenon have been posited (asset protection, education, immigration, retirement housing, accommodation for multi-national firms), little is known about the underlying drivers of Chinese foreign investment in real estate. This paper, focusing on the impacts of China’s recent domestic housing policies, examines why individual Chinese investors and development firms have changed their investment strategies and decided to develop/purchase properties overseas. Through conducting 15 in-depth interviews with four groups of participants, it has been found that China’s domestic interventional housing policies- in particular, the ‘purchase restriction’ policy, have not only created great impacts on its domestic housing market, but also encouraged Chinese outward investment in real estate. Therefore, it implies, as housing market becomes global, the adjustment of one country’s domestic housing policies has inevitably produced direct and indirect impacts on international real estate arenas.

        In vitro evaluation of 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine ester analogues, a series of anti-HBV structures with improved plasma stability and liver release

        Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection maylead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, butfew drugs are available for its treatment. Acyclic nucleosidephosphonates (ANPs) have remarkable antivirusactivities but are not easily absorbed from the gastrointestinaltract and accumulate in the kidneys, resulting innephrotoxicity. Therefore, there is a need to find effectiveliver site-specific prodrugs. The dipivaloyloxymethyl esterof 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine (PMEA)—adefovirdipivoxil (ADV)—is a first-line therapy drug forchronic hepatitis B with a low therapeutic index because ofrenal toxicity and low hepatic uptake. In this study, a seriesof PMEA derivatives were synthesized to enhance plasmastability and liver release. The metabolic stability of ADV(Chemical I) and its two analogues (Chemicals II and III)was evaluated in rat plasma and liver homogenate in vitro. An ion-pair reverse-phase HPLC–UV method and a hybridion trap and high-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry(LC-IT-TOF-MS) were used to evaluate the degradationrate of the analogues and to identify their intermediatemetabolites, respectively. Chemicals I and II were hydrolyzedby cleavage of the C–O bond to give monoesters. Sufficient enzymatic activation in the liver homogenatethrough a relatively simple metabolic pathway, in additionto a favorable stability profile in rat plasma, made ChemicalII an optimal candidate. Next, six analogues based onthe structure of Chemical II were synthesized and evaluatedin plasma and liver homogenate. Compared toChemical II, these compounds generated less active PMEAlevels in rat liver homogenate. Therefore, chemical modificationof Chemical II may lead to new promising PMEAderivatives with enhanced plasma stability and liveractivation.

        Predicting Due Dates under Various Combinations of Scheduling Rules in a Wafer Fabrication Factory

        In a wafer fabrication factory, the completion time of an order is affected by many factors related to the specifics of the order and the status of the system, so is difficult to predict precisely. The level of influence of each factor on the order completion time may also depend on the production system characteristics, such as the rules for releasing and dispatching. This paper presents a method to identify those factors that significantly impact upon the order completion time under various combinations of scheduling rules. Computer simulations and statistical analyses were used to develop effective due date assignment models for improving the due date related performances. The first step of this research was to select the releasing and dispatching rules from those that were cited so frequently in related wafer fabrication factory researches. Simulation and statistical analyses were combined to identify the critical factors for predicting order completion time under various combinations of scheduling rules. In each combination of scheduling rules, two efficient due date assignment models were established by using the regression method for accurately predicting the order due date. Two due date assignment models, called the significant factor prediction model (SFM) and the key factor prediction model (KFM), are proposed to empirically compare the due date assignment rules widely used in practice. The simulation results indicate that SFM and KFM are superior to the other due date assignment rules. The releasing rule, dispatching rule and due date assignment rule have significant impacts on the due date related performances, with larger improvements coming from due date assignment and dispatching rules than from releasing rules.

        Design a Laboratory Rotating Test Bench for the Multi-Channel Dryer Experiment

        The dryer of paper machine has problem in discharging condensate water. When the dryer rotates at a high speed, the condensate water that is not discharged in time will form a water ring, resulting in low drying efficiency and high energy consumption. Thus, based on the multi-channel dryer proposed by others, a series of experiments was carried out on multi-channel dryer under static condition. However, due to the fact that the research condition of condensation and heat transfer of multi-channel dryer is not exactly the same as the actual working condition, the multi-channel dryer has not been introduced to the market. To address the above problems, this paper presented a rotating test bench which can better simulate the actual working condition of dryer and expounded the working principle of the test bench, as well as the design and calculation of rotary device of the test bench. Finite element analysis software was used to analyze the stress on the dryer channel. In order to avoid resonance problems, modal numerical analysis was conducted on the test bench, which provided experimental conditions for the further study of multi-channel dryer.

        Evaluation of the genetic diversity of six Chinese indigenous chickens

        Objective: The extensive breeding of commercial chickens has led to a sharp decrease in the resources of many indigenous chickens, especially the indigenous chickens in the southeastern coastal region, which are on the verge of extinction, and the indigenous chickens in the northwestern region of China, which are also at risk. However, there are few reports on the evaluation of genetic diversity and conservation of genetic resources of indigenous chickens in remote areas in the Northwest of China. Methods: In the present study, the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationship of six indigenous chickens from different regions were studied based on variation in mitochondrial DNA control region (D-loop), and the degree of introgression from commercial breeds into these chickens was determined by the amount of haplotype sharing between indigenous and commercial breeds. Results: Twenty-five polymorphic sites and 25 haplotypes were detected in 206 individuals. Principal component analysis showed that the Jingning chicken had the highest genetic diversity among the six indigenous chickens. According to the degree of introgression, the six indigenous breeds may be involved in haplotype sharing with commercial breeds, and the introgression from commercial chickens into the Haidong chicken is the most serious. Conclusion: The genetic uniqueness of indigenous chickens has been eroded, so it is necessary to consider the protection of their genetic resources. Phylogenetic analysis suggests that the six indigenous chickens have two major matrilineal origins: one from Yunnan or its surrounding areas in China and the other from the Indian subcontinent.

        A case study of large phytoplankton blooms off the New Jersey coast with multi-sensor observations

        Taking the 2011 summer bloom as a study case, we investigated the transport and nutrient delivery mechanisms for large phytoplankton blooms of the New Jersey coast. The horizontal advection of the chlorophyll is approximately one order larger than the horizontal diffusion averaging the whole study area. And the sea surface currents are found to correlate with the wind stress but only for part of the middle shelf. Based on the horizontal advection simulation driven by HF radar current, the bloom is divided into three sub-regions. The northern coastal section of the bloom shows high-low-high pattern in chlorophyll time series, which is related to coastal upwelling and a clockwise eddy. Coastal currents play an important role in the eddy formation and the southward transport of the bloom. The southern coastal section of the bloom is supported by the nutrients from coastal upwelling and driven offshore by wind. The northeast section of the bloom is fueled by nutrient source upwelled through Ekman pumping. The magnitude of Ekman pumping is of the same order as the magnitude of the upwelling along the coast. These identified mechanisms could also applied to more than half of bloom events during 2002 to 2013. In the summer of 2011 off the coast of New Jersey, processes in different sub-regions worked together, leading to this large phytoplankton bloom.
