In the family Sciaridae, only 3 species have been recorded in Korea, as the pests on various crops and mushrooms in glasshouse (Bradysia difformis Frey, 1948, Bradysia procera (Winnertz, 1868), Lycoriella ingenua (Dufour, 1839)), even though Sciaridae is one of the species-rich families in the order Diptera. There are plenty of species unknown in Korea which are very hard to identify by morphological characters in the larval, pupal stages and also female adults as well. Therefore, using the sequences of cytochrome oxidase I gene (COI) from adult male, we tested the utilities of DNA barcode to identify the species of sciarid flies.
Camptomyia heterobia (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), a new pest on shiitake mushroom
Seungkwan Shin,Heungsik Lee,Seunghwan Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2008 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
Camptomyia is a genus of gall midges belonging to subfamily Porricondilinae, with 42 species known from the palaearctic region. In November 2007, serious damages of the Shiitake mushroom logs were reported in many shiitake farms from the middle part of South Korea. Rearing the adults in laboratory, a Camptomyia species was recognized as the major species causing damages on shiitake. Colonies of maggots were observed, feeding the mycelium of shiitake mushroom and the phloem of oak timbers, disturbing the mushroom fruit body formation. The morphology of the larvae and adult of this Camptomyia heterobia. is illustrated with the description of the damage symptom.

A total of 12 genera, 37 species in the subfamily Eumeninae was recognized from the insect collection of several universities and institute in Korea (Seoul National University, Kangwon National University, National institute of Agricultural Science & Tech.). In 2007, 13 species in 9 genera were collected throughout the country by sweeping net and bamboo nest traps. Among them, Anterhynchium flavomarginatum koreanum (86 specimens), Discoelius zonalis (29 specimens), and Euodynerus dantici (20 specimens) were most dominant. One species (Stenodynerus sp.) was confirmed as new to science. Using the bamboo nest traps, 7 species of Eumenid wasps were collected and the larvae of Gelechids and Pyralids were confirmed as the prey of Discoelius zonalis and Anterhynchium flavomarginatum koreanum, respectively.
Dark winged fungus gnats (Sciaridae: Diptera) collected from shiitake mushroom in Korea
Seungkwan Shin,Heungsik Lee,Seunghwan Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2009 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2009 No.10
Five genera and 7 species of sciarid flies were collected in shiitake mushroom farm from 2007 to 2009. Among them, Lycoriella ingenua was dominant as a possible pest of the shiitake mushroom cultivated in plastic bottles. Other six species are reported for the first time in Korea.
Taxonomic Review of the Genus Bardysia (Diptera: Sciaridae) in Korea
Seungkwan Shin,Heungsik Lee,Seunghwan Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2010 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.10
As a member of fungus gnats, the genus Bradysia can be the pests on many kind of agricultural crops, including mushroom farming. Feeding on healthy roots of crops, they can also spread root rot diseases. In Korea Bradysia difformis is known as major pest in greenhouse crops (carrot, cucumbers, garlic, melon, potatoes, radish, strawberries, sugarbeet, sweetpepper, sweetpotato, etc). Besides Bradysia difformis, we report six Bradysia species for the first time in Korea.

During the three the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) surges in South Korea, there was a shortage of hospital beds for COVID-19 patients, and as a result, there were cases of death while waiting for hospitalization. To minimize the risk of death and to allow those confirmed with COVID-19 to safely wait for hospitalization at home, the local government of Gyeonggi-do in South Korea developed a novel home management system (HMS). The HMS team, comprised of doctors and nurses, was organized to operate HMS. HMS provided a two-way channel for the taskforce and patients to monitor the severity of patient's condition and to provide healthcare counseling as needed. In addition, the HMS team cooperated with a triage/bed assignment team to expedite the response in case of an emergency, and managed a database of severity for real-time monitoring of patients. The HMS became operational for the first time in August 2020, initially managing only 181 patients; it currently manages a total of 3,707 patients. The HMS supplemented the government's COVID-19 confirmed case management framework by managing patients waiting at home for hospitalization due to lack of hospital and residential treatment center beds. HMS also could contribute a sense of psychological stability in patients and prevented the situation from worsening by efficient management of hospital beds and reduction of workloads on public healthcare centers. To stabilize and improve the management of COVID-19 confirmed cases, governments should organically develop self-treatment and HMS, and implement a decisive division of roles within the local governments.

The ability to prepare solid surfaces with well-controlled superhydrophobic and superoleophilic properties is of paramount importance to water–oil separation technology. Herein, we successfully prepared superhydrophobic-superoleophilic membranes by single-step deposition of polystyrene (PS) nanofibers onto a stainless steel mesh via electrospinning. The contact angles of diesel and water on the prepared PS nanofiber membrane were 0° and 155° ± 3°, respectively. Applications of the PS nanofiber membrane toward separating liquids with low surface tension, such as oil, from water were investigated in detail. Gasoline, diesel, and mineral oil were tested as representative low-viscosity oils. The PS nanofiber membranes efficiently separated several liters of oil from water in a single step, of only a few minutes’ duration. The superhydrophobic PS nanofiber membrane selectively absorbs oil, and is highly efficient at oil–water separation, making it a very promising material for oil spill remediation.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

A new approach to the characterization of reverse osmosis membrane by dynamic hysteresis
Lee, Eunsu,Lee, Sangyoup,Hong, Seungkwan Balaban Publishers 2010 Desalination and Water Treatment Vol.18 No.1

Physical aspects of dynamic hysteresis for characterizing reverse osmosis (RO) membranes have been investigated. Dynamic hysteresis was used as a parameter of showing physical surface characteristics of RO membranes. Automated microbalance was utilized to determine dynamic hysteresis based on the Wilhelmy plate method. Dynamic hysteresis determined with non-polar liquid was related to physical surface characteristics including surface roughness and heterogeneity determined by atomic force microscopy imaging and analysis. A remarkable correlation between dynamic hysteresis and surface heterogeneity was obtained when nonpolar liquid was used during the measurements. Dynamic hysteresis increased as the surface heterogeneity of RO membrane increased.
