        Adverse Reactions of the Second Dose of the BNT162b2 mRNA COVID-19 Vaccine in Healthcare Workers in Korea

        We conducted a prospective, mobile-based survey on the self-reported adverse reactions in healthcare workers (HCWs) who received both doses of the BNT162b2 mRNA vaccine. Of the 342 HCWs who completed the two-dose vaccination, 265 (77.5%) responded to the survey at least once. Overall, the rates of adverse reactions were higher after the second dose compared with the first dose (89.1% vs. 80.1%, P = 0.006). The most common systemic reactions were muscle ache (69.1%), fatigue (65.7%), headache (48.7%), chills (44.2%), and fever (32.1%), and were notably more common after the second dose vaccine as well. We also noted a sex difference in which the frequency of adverse reactions after the second dose of the vaccine was significantly higher in females, which was not observed after the first dose. The rates of adverse reactions were lower in older age groups, and the rates and severities of the adverse reactions decreased during the 3-day period following vaccination.

      • Enhancement of light-matter interaction and photocatalytic efficiency of Au/TiO_2 hybrid nanowires

        <P>Metal/TiO2 hybrid nanostructures offer more efficient charge separation and a broader range of working wavelengths for photocatalytic reactions. The sizes and shapes of such hybrid nanostructures can affect the charge separation performance when the structures interact with light, but assessments of the interaction of light with these metal-TiO2 nanostructures have only been carried out on ensemble averages, hindering both systematic descriptions of such hybrid structures and the design of new ones. Here, we fabricated TiO2 nanotubes (NTs) with and without core Au nanowires (NWs), and used spectroscopy and calculations to assess their scattering and absorption of light at the single NW level. According to the results of spectral imaging and numerical calculations, the Au/TiO2 NWs scattered and absorbed light substantially more strongly than did the plain TiO2 NTs. Measurements of the degradation of the AO7 dye to assess the photocatalytic performance of the Au/TiO2 NWs were consistent with optical measurements demonstrating a two-fold improvement over plain TiO2 NTs under 360-nm-wavelength UV illumination. Our results suggests that nanoscale optical imaging can be used to visualize the performance of the photocatalytic reaction at the single nano-object level. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America</P>

      • Nanometer Scale Confined Growth of Single-Crystalline Gold Nanowires via Photocatalytic Reduction

        <P>Single-crystalline gold nanowires (Au NWs) are directly synthesized by the photocatalytic reduction of an aqueous HAuCl<SUB>4</SUB> solution inside high-aspect-ratio TiO<SUB>2</SUB> nanotubes (NTs). Crystalline TiO<SUB>2</SUB> (anatase) NTs are prepared by the template-assisted atomic layer deposition technique with a subsequent annealing. Under the irradiation of ultraviolet light, photoexcited electrons are formed on the surfaces of TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NTs and could reduce Au ions to create nuclei without using any surfactant, reducing agent, and/or seed. Once nucleation occurred, high-aspect-ratio Au NWs are grown inside the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NTs in a diffusion-controlled manner. As the solution pH increased, the nucleation/growth rate decreased and twin-free (or not observed), single-crystalline Au NWs are formed. At a pH above 6, the nucleation/growth rates increased and Au nanoparticles are observed both inside and outside of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NTs. The confined nanoscale geometries of the interior of the TiO<SUB>2</SUB> NTs are found to play a key role in the controlled diffusion of Au species and in determining the crystal morphology of the resulting Au NWs.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

      • <i>Flavihumibacter solisilvae</i> sp. nov., isolated from forest soil

        <P>A Gram-stain-positive, strictly aerobic, yellow colony-forming bacterium, designated strain 3-3<SUP>T</SUP>, was isolated from forest soil of Bac Kan Province in Vietnam. Cells were non-motile rods without gliding motility, showing oxidase- and catalase-positive reactions. Growth was observed at 20–37 °C (optimum, 28 °C) and pH 5.5–9.5 (optimum, pH 7.5). The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C<SUB>15 : 0</SUB>, iso-C<SUB>15 : 1</SUB> G and summed feature 3 (comprising C<SUB>16 : 1</SUB>ω6<I>c</I> and/or C<SUB>16 : 1</SUB>ω7<I>c</I>). Strain 3-3<SUP>T</SUP> contained phosphatidylethanoamine, three unidentified aminolipids and three unidentified lipids. The G+C content of the genomic DNA was 49.5 mol% and the only isoprenoid quinone detected was menaquinone 7 (MK-7). Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences indicated that strain 3-3<SUP>T</SUP> formed a tight phylogenetic lineage with <I>Flavihumibacter petaseus</I> T41<SUP>T</SUP> with a bootstrap value of 100 %. Strain 3-3<SUP>T</SUP> was related most closely to <I>F. petaseus</I> T41<SUP>T</SUP> with 97.3 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity and the level of DNA–DNA relatedness between the two was 9.4±1.2 %. Based on phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and molecular features, strain 3-3<SUP>T</SUP> represents a novel species of the genus <I>Flavihumibacter</I>, for which the name <I>Flavihumibacter solisilvae</I> sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is 3-3<SUP>T</SUP> ( = KACC 17917<SUP>T</SUP> = JCM 19891<SUP>T</SUP>).</P>

      • Foldable paper-based analytical device for the detection of an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor using an angle-based readout

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The rapid on-site detection of organophosphate compounds such as nerve agents and pesticides is essential due to their lethal effect, which irreversibly inhibits the activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE). In this study, we demonstrate a foldable paper-based analytical device (PAD) that is capable of detecting an AChE inhibitor in a semiquantitative manner. An angle-based readout of the yellow area in the ring-type paper channel was used for the semiquantitative analysis with the naked eye. The color of the paper channel was changed to yellow as a result of oxidized cerium oxide nanoparticles by hydrogen peroxide produced from the enzymatic reactions. All reagents required for enzyme reactions were preadsorbed on the pop-up card shaped PAD to minimize the manual steps for dealing with multiple reagents for sequential enzyme reactions. As a proof of concept, we were able to semiquantitatively analyze a nerve agent simulant called dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), one of the AChE inhibitors, by simply reading the angle of the yellow area in the paper channel. The foldable PAD proposed here would serve as a valuable tool that allows unskilled people to semiquantitatively detect AChE inhibitors in the field, including nerve agents and organophosphate pesticides.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A foldable 3D paper device was designed for sequential enzyme reactions. </LI> <LI> Semiquantitative analysis with the naked eye was achieved by an angle-based readout. </LI> <LI> All reagents required for enzyme reactions were preadsorbed on the paper device. </LI> <LI> Dimethyl methylphosphonate as one of the AChE inhibitors was analyzed. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

        Pneumoconiosis in a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) spray worker

        Background: Using analysis of air samples from the workplace, we report on one case of pneumoconiosis in an individual who has been working in a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) spraying process for 28 years. Case presentation: The patient was diagnosed with granulomatous lung disease caused by PTFE using computed tomography (CT), lung biopsy and electron microscopy. To assess the qualitative and quantitative exposure to PTFE in workplace, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) were performed on air samples from the workplace. The presence of PTFE particles was confirmed, and the airborne concentration of PTFE was estimated to be 0.75 mg/㎥. Conclusions: This case demonstrates that long-term exposure to PTFE spraying can cause granulomatous lung lesions such as pneumoconiosis; such lesions appear to be caused not by the degradation products of PTFE from high temperatures but by spraying the particles of PTFE. Along with air-sampling analysis, we suggest monitoring the concentration of airborne PTFE particles related to chronic lung disease.

        마리 드 구르네의 『에세』 수용에 관하여

        Marie de Gournay est poète et auteur de plusieurs discours mais elle est surtout connue pour ê̂tre la fille d alliance de Montaigne et l éditrice de ses Essais entre 1595 et 1635. Dans l histoire de l évolution du texte, Gournay montre qu elle est une éditrice remarquable, donnant une forme définitive du travail de correction interrompu par la mort de l auteur. Mais notre étude consiste surtout à examiner la préface passionnée qu elle a écrite à cette occasion, longue de dix-huit pages in-folio et suffisamment polémique pour avoir été remplacée dans quatre des éditions par un avertissement de quelques lignes. Gournay s investit dans le projet pour donner une forme complète aux Essais et contrer les éditions posthumes illégales qui ne respectaient pas l esprit de l auteur. La première édition paraî̂t en 1595 et comporte la fameuse préface. Argumentant d un ton ferme, Gournay y répond point par point aux calomnies et aux reproches faits à Montaigne et à ses Essais. Ces critiques portaient essentiellement sur l abus du latin et des néologismes, l usage du gascon, l obscurité du texte, le mépris des convenances, certaines affirmations pouvant faire douter de l orthodoxie religieuse de Montaigne et son propre projet de se peindre. La manière qu a Gournay de présenter et éditer les Essais résume les demandes à la fois idéologiques et commerciales des imprimeurs du XVIIe siècle. Et cette apologie élogieuse pose la question de la réception des Essais et ouvre un débat critique sur l auteur et son oeuvre.

        연구기관 내 커뮤니티 활성화를 위한 메타버스 플랫폼 활용사례 분석

        최근 메타버스는 현실세계와 유기적 결합이 가능한 방식으로 진화하고 있다. 본 연구는 메타버스가 공간적 제약과 팬데믹 상황 등 현실적 제약에 놓여있는 전문가 집단 커뮤니케이션의 활성화에 도움이 될 수 있는지를 탐색하였다. KISTI 여성연구원들의 커뮤니티인 여직원협의회는 기존에 오프라인에서 행해지던 활동을 메타버스 플랫폼에서 개최하였다. 메타버스에 대한 구성원들의 의견을 수렴하고자 양적 연구인 설문조사와 질적 연구인 포커스그룹 인터뷰(FGI)를 실시하였고, 이를 통해 메타버스 플랫폼 활용의 장단점을 분석하고 보완점을 도출하였다. 설문조사 결과에서 메타버스에 대한 만족도가 높았고 특히 지역 간의 교류효과가 증가한 것으로 나타나, 공간적 제약을 극복하는데 도움을 준 것으로 확인되었다. FGI를 실시하여 커뮤니티 전문가들이 생각하는 메타버스 활용의 장단점 그리고 미래 방향성을 도출하였다. FGI 결과는 메타버스 활용에 대한 3개 범주(가능성, 한계, 미래의 방향성)와 범주의 하위 요소 15개로 분석되었다. 요소는 편의성, 유희성, 상호작용 효과 (소속감, 친밀감), 사용법의 진입장벽, 기술의 한계, 목적에 따라 메타버스 플랫폼 및 아바타 적용, 킬러 콘텐츠 구축 등이 있다. 향후 메타버스의 선택적 적용이 전문가 커뮤니티 활성화를 위해 필요할 것으로 기대된다. The metaverse has recently evolved in a way that can be organically combined with the real world. This study explored whether the metaverse can help revitalize professional group communication, which is under realistic constraints such as spatial constraints and pandemic situations. The Female Employee Council, a community of female researchers at KISTI, held activities that were previously conducted offline on the metaverse platform. We surveyed as quantitative research and conducted a focus group interview (FGI) as qualitative research to collect opinions from members about the metaverse. As a result of the survey, satisfaction with the metaverse was high, and in particular, the exchange effect between regions increased, confirming that it helped overcome the spatial constraints. FGI was conducted to derive the advantages and disadvantages of using metaverse and future directions that community experts think. The FGI results were analyzed into 3 categories (possibilities, limitations, and future directions) of metaverse utilization and 15 sub-elements under categories. Elements include convenience, playfulness, interaction effectiveness(feeling of belonging, intimacy), entry barriers for use, limitations of technology, application of metaverse platforms and avatars depending on the purpose, and construction of killer content. It is expected that selective application of the metaverse will be necessary to revitalize the expert community in the future.
