The presence of pathogens in wild fish is a potential threat to the fish being raised nearby fish farm. Surveillance of these pathogens in the wild is, thus, highly important to keep fish in the farm safe from serious communicable diseases. Fish and crustacean were sampled 4 times at Soyang Lake in 2016. Pathogens for five reportable communicable diseases including KHVD (koi herpesvirus disease), SVC (spring viraemia of carp), EUS (epizootic ulcerative syndrome) and WSD (white spot disease), and parasites were investigated. In Soyang Lake, pale chub Zacco platypus was the most abundant. Forty seven pale chub, 8 Korea piscivorous chub Opsarichthys uncirostris, 3 oily shiner Sarcocheilichthys variegatus wakiyae and 2 crucian carp Cyprinus carassius were investigated for detection of target diseases of fish. Seventeen Caridina denticulata denticulata, 12 Oriental river prawn Macrobrachium nipponense and 1 Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis were used for detection of WSD. As the result, reportable communicable diseases were not detected in all the freshwater animals. Dactylogyrus was detected in Korea piscivorous chub. Copepoda was also detected in pale chub and Korea piscivorous chub. Metacercaria was detected in the pale chub sampled in September and October. Those were not metacercaria of liver fluke Clonorchis sinensis.

<P>Coinhibitory pathways in the B7-CD28 family provide critical inhibitory signals that regulate immune homeostasis, defense and protect tissue integrity. CD276 (B7-H3) is an important immune checkpoint member of this family, which is induced on antigen-presenting cells (APCs), and plays an important role in the inhibition of T cell function. We have characterized the CD276 gene of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. OfCD276 has an ORF of 912 bp that codes for 303 amino acids with a predicted molecular mass of 33 kDa. It is a type I trans membrane protein with a single extracellular V- and C-like Ig domains, a transmembrane region, and a highly diverse cytoplasmic tail. This gene was distinctly expressed in gill, spleen, and skin, and sparsely expressed in other tissues. Pathogen stimulation by VHSV revealed that transcription of OfCD276 was induced on early hours in liver and expressed late in head kidney, spleen, intestine and gill tissues. Flow cytometry analysis of leukocytes revealed the percentage of granulocytes and lymphocytes that expressed OfCD276 molecules on their cell surface was 85.1% and 3.1%, respectively. Our study shows a significant role played by this coinhibitory molecule that participate in the regulation of the cell mediated immune response.</P>

Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the conical solar concentrator (CSC) system, whose design is focused on increasing its collecting efficiency by determining the optimal conical angle through a theoretical study. Methods: The design and thermal performance analysis of a solar concentrator system based on a 45° conical concentrator were conducted utilizing different mass flow rates. For an accurate comparison of these flow rates, three equivalent systems were tested under the same operating conditions, such as the incident direct solar radiation, and ambient and inlet temperatures. In order to minimize heat loss, the optimal double tube absorber length was selected by considering the law of reflection. A series of experiments utilizing water as operating fluid and two-axis solar tracking systems were performed under a clear or cloudless sky. Results: The analysis results of the CSC system according to varying mass flow rates showed that the collecting efficiency tended to increase as the flow rate increased. However, the collecting efficiency decreased as the flow rate increased beyond the optimal value. In order to optimize the collecting efficiency, the conical angle, which is a design factor of CSC, was selected to be 45° because its use theoretically yielded a low heat loss. The collecting efficiency was observed to be lowest at 0.03 kg/s and highest at 0.06 kg/s. All efficiencies were reduced over time because of variations in ambient and inlet temperatures throughout the day. The maximum efficiency calculated at an optimum flow rate of 0.06 kg/s was 85%, which is higher than those of the other flow rates. Conclusions: It was reasonable to set the conical angle and mass flow rate to achieve the maximum CSC system efficiency in this study at 45° and 0.06 kg/s, respectively.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Olive flounder (<I>Paralichthys olivaceus</I>) is one of the most valuable marine aquatic species in South Korea and faces tremendous exposure to the viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV). Given the growing importance of flounder, it is therefore essential to understand the host defense of <I>P. olivaceus</I> against VHSV infection, but studies on its immune mechanism are hindered by the lack of genomic resources. In this study, the <I>P. olivaceus</I> was infected with disease-causing VHSV isolates, ADC-VHS2012-11 and ADC-VHS2014-5 which showed moderate virulent (20% mortality) and high virulent (65% mortality), in order to investigate the effect of difference in pathogenicity in head kidney during 1, 3, 7 days of post-infection using Illumina sequencing. After removing low-quality sequences, we obtained 144,933,160 high quality reads from thirty-six libraries which were further assembled into 53,384 unigenes with an average length of 563 bp with a range of 200 to 9605 bp. Transcriptome annotation revealed that 30,475 unigenes with a cut-off e-value of 10−5 were functionally annotated. In total, 10,046 unigenes were clustered into 26 functional categories by searching against the eggNOG database, and 22,233 unigenes to 52 GO terms. In addition, 12,985 unigenes were grouped into 387 KEGG pathways. Among the 13,270 differently expressed genes, 6578 and 6692 were differentially expressed only in moderate and high virulent, respectively. Based on our sequence analysis, many candidate genes with fundamental roles in innate immune system including, pattern recognition receptors (TLRs & RLRs), Mx, complement proteins, lectins, and cytokines (chemokines, IFN, IRF, IL, TRF) were differentially expressed. Furthermore, GO enrichment analysis for these genes revealed gene response to defense response to virus, apoptotic process and transcription factor activity. In summary, this study identifies several putative immune pathways and candidate genes deserving further investigation in the context of novel gene discovery, gene expression and regulation studies and lays the foundation for fish immunology especially in <I>P. olivaceus</I> against VHSV.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> First RNA-seq based transcriptome of moderate and high virulent VHSV-infected <I>P. olivaceus</I> head kidney. </LI> <LI> The assembly contig length is more compared to the other olive flounder transcriptome published so far. </LI> <LI> Genes involved in innate immune response were showed significantly differentially upregulated during day 1 of high virulent and day 3 of moderate virulent. </LI> <LI> This <I>de novo</I> transcriptome provides useful information for evaluating the molecular mechanisms underlying host-virus interaction. </LI> </UL> </P>
Transient Hypoglycemia-induced Hemiparesis Mimicking Stroke -A Case Report-
Seong Hwa Lee,Ji Ho Ryu,Yong In Kim,Maeng Real Park,Mun Ki Min,Sun Min Hwang 대한중환자의학회 2011 Acute and Critical Care Vol.26 No.3
Hypoglycemia is caused by poor oral intake, excessive exercise, alcohol abuse and inaccurate use of a hypoglycemic agent or insulin in patients that have history of diabetes mellitus (DM), especially in the elderly. Severe hypoglycemia has a variety of different symptoms or signs from focal neurologic deficits to severe coma, or death. It can be difficult to differentiate hypoglycemia-induced symptoms or signs, and stroke or cardiovascular disease in acute setting. Transient hypoglycemic hemiparesis is an infrequent case in the emergency department (ED), which is frequently misdiagnosed for stroke. When patients with decreased mental status or hemiparesis are admitted to the ED, a routine blood sugar test is essential. Hypoglycemic hemiparesis if unrecognized can result in permanent neurological damage. Therefore, it is important to detect hypoglycemia early and treat it appropriately.
