영어 광고에 대한 언어학적 연구 및 교육적 활용

        김수정,장세은,김은일,남정미 새한영어영문학회 2007 새한영어영문학 Vol.49 No.4

There have been great interests in 'what to teach', i.e., teaching materials, followed by 'how to teach', i.e., teaching methodology in English teaching fields. Along this trend, much attention has been put on authentic materials to compensate for traditional textbooks. The authentic materials should not only develop learners' communicative skills, but also help understand the culture of target language and foster learners' critical thinking (Erkaya 2005). In this respect, advertising English is considered a useful material for authenticity and up-to-date lexicon in English teaching. The purpose of this study is two-folds. First, it examines linguistic aspects of advertising English. About 300 advertisements, listed in four major English magazines in the 2000s, were examined. Various linguistic tactics or strategies were employed in advertising English. Phonological aspects are characterized with alliteration, rhyme, pun, humor, repetition of certain sounds. Morpho-syntactically, simple and colloquial vocabularies are preferred. Neologisms, adjectives and proverbs are commonly used. Imperatives and ellipsis are used to draw people's attention. Semantic ambiguity and paradox are frequently adopted. Advertising English, at the same time, displays a paralinguistic aspect of target language's culture. Secondly, this study seeks how advertising English can be employed in English teaching. Through the real classroom teaching using advertising English as an authentic material, students felt it increased their motivation and interests in class and helped understand English culture. Finally, this study proposes a lesson plan where English learners are encouraged to present or design English abvertisement.

코퍼스에 기반한 한국 중학생의 영어 유의어 연어능력에 관한 연구

        정연창,염지민,장세은 새한영어영문학회 2006 새한영어영문학 Vol.48 No.4

This study investigates Korean middle school students' collocation ability of English synonymous verbs and adjectives. The focus is on how well Korean middle school students understand the difference in collocation between these synonymous words. The subjects are a total of 73 middle school students. They are divided into two groups according to their grade on midterm exams, a high level group and a low level group. Five pairs of verbs and adjectives, such as look/see, tell/say, large/big, little/small, tall/high were tested. The results are as follows. First, students are better in adjectives than verbs. Second, there are some questions which are pretty easy and familiar, but students do not answer correctly. This indicates that simple exposure to sentences with these words is not enough for foreign learners to acquire the appropriate use of these five pairs of synonymous words. Third, it is found that learners' general English ability correlates with their collocation ability. Fourth, no regularity can be found in their errors. This means that English grammar is not fully internalized, so that they answer the questions according to fragmentary knowledge of English and their familiarity with some particular English expressions.

      • Sentiment Analysis and Networks of Shakespeare’s Tragedies through Dialogue Corpus

        Se-Eun Jhang(장세은),Kyung-Eun Lee(이경은),Jae-Hoon Kim(김재훈),Homin Park(박호민) 한국사전학회 2018 한국사전학회 학술대회 발표논문집 Vol.2018 No.8

        ○ The purpose of this study is to discuss sentiment analysis of major characters in Shakespeare`s tragedy plays using dialogue corpora, comparing two types of word-lists for sentiment analysis: AFINN(Nielsen 2011) and VADER (Hutto and Gilbert 2014). ○ First, (i) we try to investigate important tone patterns, using line graphs as time visualization, which both polarity(positive/negative) and intensity (strength) of all characters` sentiment valence sum in each of his 10 tragedy plays may show in order to uncover different types of Shakespeare`s tragedy. ○ In order to do, this, this study focuses on the comparison of sentiment analysis of Shakespeare`s love tragedies (Othello, Anthony and Cleopatra, and Romeo and Juliet) and love comedies(A Midsummer Night`s Dream, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and As You Like it), which Archer, Culpeper and Rayson (2005) classified. ○ Second, (ii) we will discuss some features of sentiment changes between characters within an act and across acts in the four tragedies through the development dispersion of emotional relationship. We also use bar graphs as time visualization, which means that knowing who is speaking to whom allows the flow of positive and negative sentiment valence sum to be tracked. ○ Finally, (iii) this study also attempts to visualize network structures connecting major characters in Shakespeare`s connecting major characters in Shakespeare`s tragedy plays to easily figure out their detailed emotion relationship, representing relation visualization.

Clusters and Key Clusters in the Maritime English Corpus

        Se-Eun Jhang,Sung-Min Lee 한국언어과학회 2013 언어과학 Vol.20 No.4

The purpose of this study is twofold. The first is to investigate how many 4-gram clusters should be considered in Maritime English and what portion of these clusters is associated with general English. Using WordSmith tools, we extracted and identified both clusters and key clusters in terms of frequency, dispersion text thresholds, and a log-likelihood test, respectively, comparing the Maritime English Corpus(MECO) II with the British National Corpus(BNC) Baby. Our second aim is to investigate the statistical relationship between syntactic categories and semantic functions of 4-gram key clusters using a chi-square test, and to explore their semantic functions, such as stance bundles, discourse organisers, referential expressions, and special bundles, by comparing their collocates with those of the BNC Baby. Furthermore, we attempt to graphically display dispersion plots where 4-gram clusters possessing each of their semantic functions have occurred in the whole text in order to discover whether the use of their semantic functions is different from general English in comparison to the dispersion plots of the MECO II and the BNC Baby.

        Visualization of Collocational Networks

        Se-Eun Jhang,Sung-Min Lee 서울대학교 언어교육원 2013 語學硏究 Vol.49 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to explore and then visualize collocational networks of the most frequent maritime English synonyms through network analysis. To achieve this goal, we used WordSmith Tools to extract keywords from the Maritime English Corpus (MECO) Ⅱ and then we compared them with a general English corpus, the British National Corpus Baby. We discuss two pairs of near-synonyms: maritime-marine and ship-vessel from among very highly frequent keywords in the MECO Ⅱ. We used Mutual Information 3 to discover significant collocations in order to find collocational patterns. The meanings of collocates of near-synonyms were grouped in several semantic fields. In order to explore language networks of maritime vocabularies, we used the social network analysis tools, NetMiner and UCINET. We found that collocates of near-synonyms were quite different. After we extended our work to all collocations, we found that the entire network of all collocations also shows distributions and characteristics similar to those of our target networks.

A Corpus-based Analysis of English Abstracts of Korean Scholarly Articles

        Jhang, Se-Eun(장세은),Hong, Shin-Chul(홍신철) 새한영어영문학회 2012 새한영어영문학 Vol.54 No.4

This paper reports on a corpus-based study of English for Academic Purposes (EAP). It investigates linguistic characteristics of English abstracts written by Korean scholars in the fields of English Literature and of English Linguistics in order to find lexico-grammatical patterns used by native and non-native English scholars specializing in English Literature and English Linguistics. The paper hopes to offer suggestions on suitable academic English pedagogical techniques, especially for English writing. In our study we compiled two English abstracts corpora from journals of English language and literature and journals of English linguistics from English-speaking countries and from Korea for the years 2000 to 2011: Anglophonic Corpus and Korean Corpus. Each corpus further yielded two subcorpora: native and non-native English literature corpora and native and non-native English linguistics corpora. Unlike previous studies focusing more or less on abstracts of native scholars, in this study abstracts of non-native scholars are compared to those of native scholars in the areas of English literature and English linguistics. This study contrastively analyzes abstracts in academic research articles in terms of two aspects: (i) native/non-native speakers’ distinctive use of language and (ii) linguistic features of abstracts as a genre. In particular, four types of methodologies (statistics, wordlists, keywordlists, and key clusters) often adopted in corpus-based analyses are used to explore characteristics of abstracts written by Koreans and by native speakers.
