        미국수화언어와 한국수화언어에서의 WH-의문문

        장세은 대한언어학회 1999 언어학 Vol.7 No.3

Jhang, Sea-Bun. 1999. WH-questions in American Sign Language and Korean Sign Language. Linguistics 7-3, 297-319. The purpose of this paper is to compare some aspects of wh-questions in American Sign Language and Korean Sign Language, and to show that the data from KSL share some arguments provided by the two current disputing analyses of the rightward and leftward wh-movement. In both ASL and KSL, a nonmanual wh-marking functions as a grammatical marker, and wh-words are in situ, or they optionally appear in sentence-final position. In addition, the two languages have the distribution of nonmanual syntactic wh-marking in common. When manual wh-material is available in sentence-final position, the spread of wh-marking over the rest of the sentence is optional; otherwise, spread is obligatory. Two pieces of evidence from KSL in favor of rightward analysis are (i) extraction of wh-words from within an embedded clause and (ii) left-dislocation of wh-words in sentences containing spatial verbs. In contrast, there are three pieces of evidence from KSL in favor of leftward wfi-mmovement: (i) variants of extraction of wh-words from within an embedded clause, (ii) sentence-initial wh-object, (iii) focus function of right-peripheral Wh-material in wh-doubles sentences. • Corpus-based & Corpus-driven Language Network analysis of English Literature: Focusing on Shakespeare’s Tragedies and Melville’s Moby Dick

장세은 미래영어영문학회 2019 미래영어영문학회 학술대회 자료집 Vol.2019 No.6

This research aims to explore English literature corpora based on a quantitative approach and provide a corpus-based language network analysis of Shakespeare’s tragedy plays and a corpus-driven language network analysis of Melville’s Moby Dick novel’s 135 chapters to reveal their structural features. In Shakespeare’s tragedies, we talk about some issues of keyword linkage between the Shakespeare tragedy plays such as Romeo & Juliet, Othello, and King Lear, which were firstly assumed by Scott and Tribble (2006) and realize visualization of their keyword linkage network. We also show that some important keywords such as love, death jealousy, madness, etc. are connected between texts such as Romeo & Juliet, Othello, and King Lear by using a keyword linkage network. For example, we display a character linkage network linked with whole keywords between six important characters in Rome & Juliet. Furthermore, we talk about the necessity of proving which formal patterns of keyword linkage are related to literary analyses and interpretations in future research. Furthermore, we need to visualize sentiment network structures connecting major characters in Shakespeare’s tragedy plays, using dialogue corpora, to easily figure out their detailed emotion relationship, representing relation visualization. In Moby Dick, we consider standardized type and token ration (STTR) of 135 chapters and then we show the structural features of chapters after extracting keywords of every chapter and creating a proper chapter network by using similarity measures and several different thresholds. In textural analysis, the STTR shows three distinguished high points where new plots may be introduced. This results should be checked out with the literature experts in order to find the author’s intention. Each chapter can be connected through keywords. The network structures reveal that there are more cohesive chapter groups than others. In addition, we observe that different thresholds of similarity algorithm weight produce different network structures. Network structural analysis can show which chapters are more central than others by using degree centrality. To conclude, this quantitative analysis may reveal some patterns or styles of what wrighters and authors intended.

기름유출 관련 해양법영어코퍼스에서의 Wmatrix를 사용한 주요 의미영역 비교 분석

        장세은,이성민,김신호 한국중앙영어영문학회 2015 영어영문학연구 Vol.57 No.3

The study aims to build a Maritime Law English Corpus related with oil spill, to comparatively analyze key semantic domains, and to explore similarities and differences among three subcorpora by using a network analysis. Key semantic domains are extracted from three different maritime law texts such as international public maritime law, international private maritime law, and agreements of maritime accidents through Wmatrix keyness analysis to compare each of three corpora with BNC Sampler Informative. We focus on key semantic domains shared with three subcorpora by using a Netminer 4.0 program. Compensation agreements for maritime accidents related with oil spill will be made with regard to international public maritime law and international private maritime law. Comparative analysis of maritime law texts will make a great contribution to corpus linguistics and will also provide fodder for identifying the differences and similarities between the similar laws through quantitative analysis.

      • 한·미 수화언어의 연구동향과 언어학적 접근

장세은 新羅大學校 人文科學硏究所 2000 白楊人文論集 Vol.5 No.-

The deaf people of Korea have formed a bi-cultural society as a minor group in Korea because they are all bilingual, Korean as a spoken language and Korean Sign Language(KSL) as their own language. This paper tries to help Korean hearing people to recognize this point and to understand KSL. The purpose of this paper is to examine a recent research trend on KSL and ASL(American Sign Language) and to study its linguistic approach to the two languages, comparing KSL with ASL and Korean as a spoken language. In order to examine this trend, section 1 discusses some problems with basic terms related to sign language and presents five questions to be discussed. Section 2 gives a brief review of history of ASL and KSL. Section 3 examines how to undergo social understanding and language education policies about ASL and KSL. Section 4 considers where sign language is located in linguistics. Here we examine properties of sign language consisting of manual signs and nonmanual signals, finding out the differences and similarities between spoken and signed languages. Section 5 introduces two different methods of the sign language research and deals with linguistic analyses of some significant issues in phenology, morphology, and syntax, which I have studied. Section 6 summarizes findings discussed in the previous sections and provides some suggestions for the further research on KSL.

Visualization of Collocational Networks:Maritime English Keywords

        장세은,이성민 서울대학교 언어교육원 2013 語學硏究 Vol.49 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to explore and then visualize collocational networks of the most frequent maritime English synonyms through network analysis. To achieve this goal, we used WordSmith Tools to extract keywords from the Maritime English Corpus (MECO) Ⅱ and then we compared them with a general English corpus, the British National Corpus Baby. We discuss two pairs of near-synonyms: maritime-marine and ship-vessel from among very highly frequent keywords in the MECO Ⅱ. We used Mutual Information 3 to discover significant collocations in order to find collocational patterns. The meanings of collocates of near-synonyms were grouped in several semantic fields. In order to explore language networks of maritime vocabularies, we used the social network analysis tools, NetMiner and UCINET. We found that collocates of near-synonyms were quite different. After we extended our work to all collocations, we found that the entire network of all collocations also shows distributions and characteristics similar to those of our target networks.

A Web Site Model for Improving Korean and English Reading Abilities for Korean Deaf Children

        장세은 대한언어학회 2005 언어학 Vol.13 No.4

The purpose of this paper is to propose a web site model to improve reading skills of Korean and English for Korean deaf children, in line with the bottom-up model of reading process. The proposed model involves four text factors of reading processes: letter recognition, word identification, syntactic analysis, and figurative expressions. For the purpose of this paper, the paper reviews the previous research on this topic and the current online sites for Korean deaf people, and discusses why the proposed model needs a bilingual approach as the theoretical background.
