      • C60 dimers connected through pleiadene bridges: fullerenes talking to each other

        Sastre-Santos, Á,ngela,Parejo, Concepció,n,Martí,n-Gomis, Luis,Ohkubo, Kei,Ferná,ndez-Lá,zaro, Fernando,Fukuzumi, Shunichi Royal Society of Chemistry 2011 Journal of materials chemistry Vol.21 No.5

<P>New C60 dimers 1, 2 and 3 that differ in the distance between the two balls, connected through pleiadene bridges have been synthesized. Different synthetic strategies have been used to prepare C60 dimers 1–3. A diastereoisomeric mixture was obtained for C60 dimer 1, which was separated by column chromatography and characterized by NMR. By CV measurements, no interaction between the two balls was found in the ground state in any type of C60 dimer. By reduction with dimeric benzylnicotinamide [(BNA)2], a two electron reductant, the interaction between both C60 units has been analyzed using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). For C60 dimer 3, upon addition of 1 equivalent (BNA)2 no electronic interaction in the C60˙−–C60˙− was observed due to the long distance between the C60 balls (20 Å). However, for C60 dimer 1, where the distance between radicals is shorter, 10 Å, the electronic interaction in the di(radical anion), C60˙−–C60˙− in the presence of 1 equivalent of (BNA)2 was observed by EPR, corresponding to a triplet biradical.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Addition of 1 equivalent of (BNA)2 to dimer 1 yields the C60˙−–C60˙− triplet biradical where electronic interaction is observed. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c0jm02635b'> </P>

      • Collaborative Creation with Soundcool for Socially Distanced Education

        Jorge Sastre(호르헤 사스트레),Nuria Lloret(누리아 로렛),Stefano Scrani(스테파노 스크라니),Roger B. Dannenberg(로저 비 다넨베르그),Jesus Jara(헤수스 하라) 한국전자음악협회 2020 에밀레 Vol.18 No.-

Soundcool is a flexible, modular computer music software system created for music education. Moreover, Soundcool is an educational approach that embraces collaboration and discovery in which the teacher serves as a mentor for project‐based learning. To enable collaboration, Soundcool was designed from the beginning to allow individual modules to be controlled over Wi‐Fi using smartphone and tablet apps. This collaborative feature has enabled network‐based performance over long distances. In particular, the recent demand for social distancing motivated further explorations to use Soundcool for distance education and to enable young musicians to perform together in a creative way. We describe the educational approach of Soundcool, experience with network performances with children, and future plans for a web‐based social‐network‐inspired collaborative music creation system.

Gut Microbiota and Nutrition: Strategies for the Prevention and Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes

        Maria Sastre,Alessandra Cimbalo,Jordi Man˜es,Lara Manyes 한국식품영양과학회 2024 Journal of medicinal food Vol.27 No.2

The prevalence of diabetes has increased in last decades worldwide and is expected to continue to do so in thecoming years, reaching alarming figures. Evidence have shown that patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) have intestinalmicrobial dysbiosis. Moreover, several mechanisms link the microbiota with the appearance of insulin resistance and diabetes. Diet is a crucial factor related to changes in the composition, diversity, and activity of gut microbiota (GM). In this review, thecurrent and future possibilities of nutrient–GM interactions as a strategy to alleviate T2D are discussed, as well as themechanisms related to decreased low-grade inflammation and insulin resistance. A bibliographic search of clinical trials inPubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus was carried out, using the terms ‘‘gut microbiota, diet and diabetes.’’ The data analyzedin this review support the idea that dietary interventions targeting changes in the microbiota, including the use of prebioticsand probiotics, can improve glycemic parameters. However, these strategies should be individualized taking into accountother internal and external factors. Advances in the understanding of the role of the microbiota in the development ofmetabolic diseases such as T2D, and its translation into a therapeutic approach for the management of diabetes, are necessaryto allow a comprehensive approach.

Cr(VI) removal from synthetic and real wastewaters: The use of the invasive biomass Sargassum muticum in batch and column experiments

Marta Lopez-Garcıa,Roberto Herrero,Manuel E. Sastre de Vicente,Pablo Lodeiro 한국공업화학회 2012 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.18 No.4

The macroalgae Sargassum muticum was selected for the treatment of solutions containing Cr(VI). Very acidic pH values were established as optimal for Cr(VI) reduction. Algae chemical modification reduced equilibrium time to 4 h. First order kinetic model was used to describe the reduction kinetic of Cr(VI). A column experiment allowed to distinguish the processes occurring during Cr(VI) elimination: its reduction to Cr(III) and the subsequent adsorption of this species formed. Under the selected conditions the biomass was capable of reducing all the incoming Cr(VI) during 77 h. Industrial wastewaters from chrome plating industry were also tested for chromium removal.

Microstructure–Hardness–Corrosion Performance of 17–4 Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steels Processed by Selective Laser Melting in Comparison with Commercial Alloy

        C. Garcia‑Cabezon,M. A. Castro‑Sastre,A. I. Fernandez‑Abia,M. L. Rodriguez‑Mendez,F. Martin‑Pedrosa 대한금속·재료학회 2022 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.28 No.11

The 17–4 Precipitation Hardening Stainless Steel (PH SS) manufactured by Selective Laser Melting (SLM) has wide applicationperspectives, but they are limited due to defects and anisotropy. The selection of the appropriate process variablesplays a fundamental part in the microstructure and in the determination of the final mechanical and corrosion properties. The main purpose of this study is to analyze the corrosion behavior, hardness and microstructure of 17–4 PH SS manufacturedby SLM in comparison to the commercial counterparts. The anisotropic behavior was investigated by analyzing themicrostructure–hardness and corrosion interrelationship, both in the surface of the construction platform and in the growthdirection of the element. The corrosion behavior of the SLM 17–4PH SS in its natural state was investigated in relation tothat of the 17–4 PH SS heat treated in a 0.1 M NaCl + 0.5 M H2SO4solution, using three electrochemical techniques. Theresults confirmed that the corrosion resistance of SLM 17–4 PH SS was considerably better than that of the forging, evenafter 60 days of immersion in the test solution. This was attributed to the absence of important manufacturing defects, tothe fine microstructure with an important amount of austenite produced by SLM, and to a small amount of non-metallicinclusions precipitated as a result of the fast cooling and the high speed of solidification associated with the SLM process.

      • Light harvesting zinc naphthalocyanine–perylenediimide supramolecular dyads: long-lived charge-separated states in nonpolar media

El-Khouly, Mohamed E.,Gutié,rrez, Ana M.,Sastre-Santos, Á,ngela,Ferná,ndez-Lá,zaro, Fernando,Fukuzumi, Shunichi The Royal Society of Chemistry 2012 Physical chemistry chemical physics Vol.14 No.10

<P>Photoinduced electron-transfer dynamics of self-assembled donor–acceptor dyads formed by axial coordination of zinc naphthalocyanine, ZnNc, and perylenediimide (PDI) bearing either pyridine (py) or imidazole (im) coordinating ligands were investigated. The PDIim unit was functionalized with <I>tert</I>-octylphenoxy groups at the bay positions, which avoid aggregation providing solubility, to examine the effect of the bulky substituents at the bay positions on the rates of electron-transfer reactions. The combination between zinc naphthalocyanine and perylenediimide entities absorbs light over a wide region of the visible and near infrared (NIR) spectrum. The binding constants of the self-assembled ZnNc:PDIpy (<B>1</B>) and ZnNc:PDIim (<B>2</B>) in toluene were found to be 2.40 × 104 and 1.10 × 105 M−1, respectively, from the steady-state absorption and emission measurements, indicating formation of moderately stable complexes. The geometric and electronic calculations by using an <I>ab initio</I> B3LYP/6-311G method showed the majority of the highest occupied frontier molecular orbital (HOMO) on the zinc naphthalocyanine entity, while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) was on the perylenediimide entities, suggesting that the charge-separated states of the supramolecular dyads are ZnNc&z.rad;+:PDI&z.rad;−. The electrochemical results suggest the exothermic charge-separation process <I>via</I> the singlet states of both ZnNc and PDI entities in nonpolar toluene. Upon coordination of perylenediimide to ZnNc, the main quenching pathway involved charge separation <I>via</I> the singlet-excited states of ZnNc and PDIs. Clear evidence of the intramolecular electron transfer from the singlet-excited state of ZnNc to PDI within the supramolecular dyads in toluene was monitored by the femtosecond laser photolysis by observing the characteristic absorption band of the PDI radical anion (PDI&z.rad;−) and the ZnNc radical cation (ZnNc&z.rad;+) in the visible and NIR regions. The rate constants of charge-separation (<I>k</I>CS) processes of the self-assembled dyads <B>1</B> and <B>2</B> were determined to be 4.05 × 1010 and 1.20 × 109 s−1, respectively. The rate constant of charge recombination (<I>k</I>CR) and the lifetime of charge-separated states (<I>τ</I>CS) of dyad <B>1</B> were determined to be 2.34 × 108 s−1 and 4.30 ns, respectively. Interestingly, a slower charge recombination (2.20 × 107 s−1) and a longer lifetime of the charge separated state (45 ns) were observed in dyad <B>2</B> in nonpolar toluene by utilizing the nanosecond transient measurements. The absorption in a wide section of the solar spectrum and the high charge-separation/charge-recombination ratio suggest the usefulness of the self-assembled zinc naphthalocyanine–perylenediimide dyads as good photosynthetic models.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Good combination! Postoperative biological and clinical outcomes following uncomplicated pancreaticoduodenectomy

        Emilie Lermite,Tao Wu,Alain Sauvanet,Christophe Mariette,Francois paye,Fabrice Muscari,Antonio Sa Cunha,Bernard Sastre,Jean-Pierre Arnaud,Patrick Pessaux 한국간담췌외과학회 2016 한국간담췌외과학회지 Vol.20 No.1

Backgrounds/Aims: The aim of this study was to describe clinical and biological changes in a group of patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) without any complication during the postoperative period. These changes reflect the “natural history” of PD, and a deviation should be considered as a warning sign. Methods: Between January 2000 and December 2009, 131 patients underwent PD. We prospectively collected and retrospectively analyzed demographic data, pathological variables, associated pathological conditions, and preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative variables. Postoperative variables were validated using an external prospective database of 158 patients. Results: The mean postoperative length of hospital stay was 20.3±4 days. The mean number of days until removal of nasogastric tube was 6.3±1.6 days. The maximal fall in hemoglobin level occurred on day 3 and began to increase after postoperative day (POD) 5, in patients with or without transfusions. The white blood cell count increased on POD 1 and persisted until POD 7. There was a marked rise in aminotransferase levels at POD 3. The peak was significantly higher in patients with hepatic pedicle occlusion (866±236 IU/L versus 146±48 IU/L; p<0.001). For both γ-glutamyl transpeptidase and alkaline phosphatase, there was a fall on POD1, which persisted until POD 5, followed with a stabilization. Bilirubin decreased progressively from POD 1 onwards. Conclusions: This study facilitates a standardized biological and clinical pathway of follow-up. Patients who do not follow this recovery indicator could be at risk of complications and additional exams should be made to prevent consequences of such complications.
