        Higher energy consumption in the evening is associated with increased odds of obesity and metabolic syndrome: findings from the 2016-2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (7th KNHANES)

        OBJECTIVES: Chrono-nutrition emphasizes meal timing in preventing obesity and metabolic disorders. This study explores the impact of temporal dietary patterns (TDPs) on obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in Korean adults aged 20 years to 65 years. METHODS: We utilized dynamic time warping method and Kernel k-means clustering to investigate diet quality and the odds ratios (ORs) of obesity and MetS with different TDPs using data from the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. RESULTS: Participants were divided into three groups based on relative energy intake over 24 hours. After adjusting for age and gender, Cluster 3 (with the highest proportion of energy intake in the evening) had the lowest Healthy Eating Index scores compared to other clusters. Following adjustment for key covariates, Cluster 3 showed the highest values for body mass index, waist circumference, blood pressure, total cholesterol, and triglycerides. Compared to Cluster 1 (with a lower proportion of energy intake in the evening), Cluster 2 and Cluster 3 had ORs for obesity of 1.12 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.97 to 1.30) and 1.19 (95% CI, 1.03 to 1.37), respectively. For MetS, the ORs were 1.26 (95% CI, 1.08 to 1.48) and 1.37 (95% CI, 1.17 to 1.61) when comparing Cluster 2 and Cluster 3 to Cluster 1. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals that individuals with higher energy intake in the evening have increased odds of obesity and MetS, even after adjusting for major covariates, including age and total energy intake.

        Transduodenal ampullectomy for ampullary tumors-single center experience of consecutive 26 patients

        Purpose: Transduodenal ampullectomy (TDA) has been reported in a limited number of cases and in a small number of case series. The aim of this study was to analyze perioperative and long-term oncological outcomes of patients with ampullary tumors who underwent TDA in a single large-volume center. Methods: Through a retrospective review of data from 2004 to 2016, we identified 26 patients who underwent TDA at Asan Medical Center. Results: Eleven of 26 patients underwent TDA for T1 and carcinoma in situ (high-grade dysplasia) cancer; these patients are still alive without recurrence. A major in-hospital complication (3.8%) occurred in 1 case, but there was no case of 90-day mortality. In addition, none of the patients was diagnosed as having newly developed diabetes mellitus after TDA. No significant differences were found between open and laparoscopic-TDA in terms of operation time, painkiller use, and hospital stay. Conclusion: TDA is a feasible and effective surgical procedure for the treatment of selected patients with ampullary tumors. It is an alternative treatment option in cases of ampullary tumors not amenable to endoscopic papillectomy or pancreaticoduodenectomy.

        Child Trauma seen through the Lens of the Theology of the Body and Recovery: Focusing on the Healing of Child Trauma

        서양철학의 전통적 이원론에서 인간의 몸은 평가절하되어 왔다. 몸 신학은 이러한 이분법적 사고를 반대하고, 전인적 인간, 곧 몸으로서의 인간을 강조한다. 인간의 육체를 입은 예수 그리스도의 몸의 죽음과 몸의 부활은, 영혼과 몸의 하나됨을 가진 몸적 주체로서의 전인적 인간을 친히 체험하시고, 그 아픔을 감당하신 구속 사건이다. 이러한 몸 신학의 관점에서 볼 때, 트라우마는 전인적 인간의 몸에 상처가 난 것으로, 죄된 세상에서 인간이 당한 고난의 현실이다. 예수님은 끝까지 자신을 버리지 않는 아버지 하나님을 신뢰하였고, 그 아버지의 뜻을 따라 인간의 고난과 함께 하기 위해 성육신하시고, 또 인간을 죄와 고난과 죽음에서 구원하기 위해 그 몸을 십자가에 내어주고, 부활하심으로 인간에 대한 그 사랑을 확증하셨다. 이와 같이 그 몸으로 하나님의 사랑을 표현하신 그리스도처럼, 끝까지 자신을 버리지 않고 자신을 사랑하는 안전한 부모와의 관계를 통해, 상처난 몸을 가진 아동들은 결국 몸으로 오신 예수 그리스도의 사랑을 날마다 체험함으로 트라우마를 회복하는 궁극적인 길이 될 것이다. 특별히 자신의 몸에 각인된 트라우마를 정교하게 표현하기 어려워하는 아동들에게, 이들의 몸에 입은 상처의 회복은 몸의 놀이를 통해 이루어질 수 있다. 예수님은 십자가에 자신을 버리셨으나, 결국 끝까지 자신을 버리지 않으시는 아버지 하나님을 신뢰하였고, 그 신뢰를 바탕으로 아버지 하나님의 뜻에 순종하여 십자가에 죽으시고, 부활하심으로, 인간에 대한 그 사랑을 확증하셨다. 아동의 트라우마 회복은 이처럼 끝까지 자신을 버리지 않는다는 부모에 대한 신뢰, 곧 안전한 애착에 달려있다. Drawing on the logic of binary oppositions, Western philosophy has a long-standing tradition to look down on the human body. In stark contrast to this dichotomous thinking, the theology of the body puts its emphasis on the whole human. The death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in the human body signify the redemptive events in which he himself experienced the whole human and suffered pain as the body subject, especially in unity of body and soul. When seen from the theology of the body, trauma can also be seen as a wound on the whole human and it is the reality of human suffering in a sinful world. Jesus trusted God the Father, who did not forsake him to the end. According to his Father"s will, Jesus became incarnate in such a way as to share in human suffering. Moreover, Jesus sacrificed his body on the cross and was resurrected to save humans from sin, suffering, and death, confirming his love for them in doing so. With the relationship of Jesus the Son with God the Father in mind, one can understand children traumatized with broken bodies anew. Remember that Children can sense the love of Jesus everyday in a secure relationship with the parents in their unfailing love. This hints at the ultimate path to recovery. Especially for children who find it difficult to express in detail the trauma imprinted on their bodies, the healing of their wounds can be achieved through the play of the body. As can be seen from Jesus’ trust in God the Father, Children"s recovery from trauma depends on their trust in the parents and their secure attachments in which they have an unwavering conviction that they will not be abandoned until the end.

      • Immunostimulating activity of a water soluble polysaccharide from a defatted Korean edible nut

        In this study, we extracted water soluble polysaccharides from the defatted Korean edible nut cake by boiling for 3 h in water and purified by ethanol precipitation and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography. The monosaccharide composition analysis showed that the purified polysaccharide (NP) is a galacturonoxyloarabinan type polysaccharide consisting of xylose (7.2, molar ratio), arabinose (8.8), and galacturonic acid (4.4) as major sugars and other minor sugars like glucose, galactose, rhamnose, and glucuronic acid. It's molecular mass was shown to be 1,274 kDa by size-exclusion HPLC. Then, we investigated the immunostimulating activity of NP in murine macrophage RAW 264.7 cells. The purified water soluble polysaccharide (NP) did not show any detectable level of cytotoxicity to RAW 264.7 cells in the concentration range tested (10-200 μg/ml) and rather, it promoted the cell proliferation. The NP stimulated the RAW 264.7 cells to produce the nitric oxide (NO) and increase the mRNA expression level of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). In addition, it induced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and Interleukin-6) and chemokines (RANTES and MIP-1α), which are largely known to play an important role in immune system. Taken together, these results suggest that NP can be considered a potential immunopotentiator and thus can be a potent ingredient of health beneficial functional foods or therapeutic agents.

        Service Identification of Internet-Connected Devices Based on Common Platform Enumeration

        There are a great number of Internet-connected devices and their information can be acquired through an Internet-wide scanning tool. By associating device information with publicly known security vulnerabilities, security experts are able to determine whether a particular device is vulnerable. Currently, the identification of the device information and its related vulnerabilities is manually carried out. It is necessary to automate the process to identify a huge number of Internet-connected devices in order to analyze more than one hundred thousand security vulnerabilities. In this paper, we propose a method of automatically generating device information in the Common Platform Enumeration (CPE) format from banner text to discover potentially weak devices having the Common Vulnerabilities Exposures (CVE) vulnerability. We demonstrated that our proposed method can distinguish as much adequate CPE information as possible in the service banner.

      • Structural Analysis and Immunostimulating Activity of Water-Soluble Polysaccharides Isolated from the Defatted Korean Pine (Pinus koraiensis) Nut in RAW264.7 Cells

        Polysaccharides of Korean pine nut were isolated, identified and their bioactivity was evaluated. The water-soluble polysaccharides were extracted from the defatted Korean pine nut by boiling for 3 h in water and purified by ethanol precipitation and DEAE-Cellulose column chromatography. The monosaccharide composition analysis showed that purified polysaccharide(s) (PNE-P1) consisted of xylose (7.2, molar ratio), arabinose (8.8), and galacturonic acid (4.4) as major sugars and other minor sugars including glucose, galactose, rhamnose, and glucuronic acid. Their molecular weights were determined to be 1,213 kDa, 634 kDa and 331 kDa by size-exclusion HPLC. FT-IR and proton NMR analyses showed that PNE-P1 is a mixture of pectin-type polysaccharides containing arabinan, homogalacturonan (HG), rhamnogalacturonan type 1 (RG-1) and heteroxylan. The immunostimulating activity of PNE-P1 was investigated in murine macrophage RAW264.7 cells. PNE-P1 did not show any detectable level of cytotoxicity to RAW264.7 cells in the concentration range tested (10-200 μg/ml) and rather, it promoted the cell proliferation. PNE-P1 induced the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, Interleukin-6 and Interleukin-10) and chemokines (RANTES and MIP-1α). These results indicate that PNE-P1 stimulated the RAW264.7 cells to increase cytokine secretions. Taken together, these results suggest that PNE-P1 can be considered as a potential immunopotentiator.

      • Structural features and immune modulating activity of plant seed polysaccharides (PSP-F1) via stimulation of RAW 264.7 macrophage cells

        Many plant polysaccharide have immunomodulatory and anti-tumour activities. In the present study, water-soluble polysaccharides were isolated from an edible plant seed mainly by hot water extraction, 75% ethanol precipitation, and DEAE-cellulose column chromatography and tentatively named as PSP-F1. The PSP-F1 was shown to be a mixture of three major polysaccharides with molecular mass of approximately 1,200, 640, and 300 kDa, respectively, as estimated by size-exclusion HPLC analysis. The HPAEC-PAD analysis for neutral sugar composition and showed that PSP-F1 consists of arabinose (Ara) and xylose (Xyl), as the major neutral sugars, and other minor neutral sugars such as rhamnose (Rha), galactose (Gal), and glucose (Glc). HPLC analysis for uronic acids showed that galacturonic acid (GalA) presents as the major uronic acid and glucuronic acid (GlcA) was the minor one. Together with the neutral monosaccharides and uronic acids composition, the FT-IR and NMR analysis suggested that PSP-F1 appears to be a mixture of pectin type and heteroxylan polysaccharides. The results showed that the PSP-F1 (0-100 μg/ml) significantly induced the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α and IL-6 and upregulation of MAPKs (ERK, JNK and p38) phosphorylation. The secretion of various pro-inflammatory cytokines from macrophages is mainly caused by MAPK cascade activation. These results demonstrated that the PSP-F1 isolated from a plant seed is a mixture of pectin type and heteroxylan polysaccharides, which are typical for plant cell wall polysaccharides, and that it effectively stimulates macrophages to secrete pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6, by upregulation of MAPKs phosphorylation. The results of this study suggests that PSP-F1 may be potential immunostimulator for health benefits and as a pharmaceutical component.
