No effective antiviral therapy is proven yet, but clinical use of ribavirin (RBV) has been tried. We investigated the antiviral effect of RBV against SFTSV in vitro. Methods: To test for cytotoxicity of RBV, Vero cells were treated with different concentrations of RBV (3.90 to 500 μg/mL, two-fold dilution) and analyzed by cell viability MTS assay 48h post-infection. To determine antiviral activity of RBV against SFTSV, Vero cells were infected with SFTSV strain Gangwon/Korea/2012 at 100 TCID50 (50% tissue culture infective dose) per well in a 96-well plate, and RBV was added at the concentrations showing no or minimal cytotoxicity. Viral RNAs were extracted from the culture supernatants and quantifi ed using one-step real-time reverse transcription- PCR to amplify the partial large segment of SFTSV. Statistical analysis was done by one-way ANOVA with Tukey`s post hoc test. Results: Cytotoxicity due to RBV was not observed at RBV concentration =31.3 μg/ mL. Viral RNAs at 24h post-RBV treatment were reduced with increasing RBV concentrations (1-32 μg/mL), compared with those of mock-treated cells (P <0.01, Figure). Half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of RBV was 3.69 μg/mL at 24h post-RBV treatment. Conclusions: Our study shows that RBV has antiviral effect against SFTSV in a dose-dependent manner. Further studies are required to evaluate the effi cacy of RBV in SFTS.
Entropic Image Thresholding Segmentation Based on Gabor Histogram

Image thresholding techniques introducing spatial information are widely used image segmentation. Some methods are used to calculate the optimal threshold by building a specific histogram with different parameters, such as gray value of pixel, average gray value and gradient-magnitude, etc. However, these methods still have some limitations. In this paper, an entropic thresholding method based on Gabor histogram (a new 2D histogram constructed by using Gabor filter) is applied to image segmentation, which can distinguish foreground/background, edge and noise of image effectively. Comparing with some methods, including 2D-KSW, GLSC-KSW, 2D-D-KSW and GLGM-KSW, the proposed method, tested on 10 realistic images for segmentation, presents a higher effectiveness and robustness.
Transcriptional repression of Type Ⅰ procollagen genes during adipocyte differentiation

Adipocyte differentiation is a very complex process in which whole-cell changes are accompanied.Among them, type I procollagen gene has been shown to specifically decrease during adipocyte differentiation; however, little is known about the molecular mechanism. To examine how type I procollagen gene expression is regulated at the level of transcription during adipocyte differentiation,3T3-L1 preadipocyte cell line was used as an in vitro model.Northern blot analysis demostrated that mRNA expression of type I procollagen gene was dramatically reduced during adipocyte differentiation. Time-course analysis indicated that decrease in mRNA expression occurred at early stage of differentiation. Studies on several stable cell lines showed that transcriptional activities of both α1 and α2 promoters decreased significantly during adipocyte differentiation.Despite extensive deletion-promoter analyses, however, we could not identify the cis-element responsible for the switch-off of type I procollagen bene during adipocyte differentiation, suggesting that the transcriptional repression of this gene occur through general transcriotion machinery rather than a specific cis-element. In conclusion, down-regulation of type I procollagen mRNA expression during adipocyte differentiation is due to repression of its promoter activity through general transcription machinery.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the progression risk of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) with different clinical managements. METHODS: Women with their first diagnosis of ASCUS cytology were retrieved from the national cervical cancer screening database and linked to the national health insurance research database to identify the management of these women. The incidences of developing cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 and invasive cervical cancer (CIN3+) were calculated, and the hazard ratios (HRs) were estimated using a Cox proportional hazards model. This study was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the National Taiwan University Hospital and is registered at ClinicalTrials.gov (Identifier: NCT02063152). RESULTS: There were total 69,741 women included. Various management strategies including colposcopy, cervical biopsies and/or endocervical curettage, and cryotherapy, failed to reduce the risk of subsequent CIN3+ compared with repeat cervical smears. Loop electrosurgical excision procedure/conization significantly decreased risk of subsequent CIN3+ lesions (HR=0.22; 95% confidence interval [CI]=0.07–0.68; p=0.010). Women in their 40s–50s had an approximately 30% risk reduction compared to other age groups. Women with a previous screening history >5 years from the present ASCUS diagnosis were at increased risk for CIN3+ (HR=1.24; 95% CI=1.03–1.49; p=0.020). CONCLUSION: In women of first-time ASCUS cytology, a program of repeat cytology can be an acceptable clinical option in low-resource settings. Caution should be taken especially in women with remote cervical screening history more than 5 years.
SAFE TECHNOLOGY WITH A NOVEL REAR COLLISION AVOIDANCE SYSTEM OF VEHICLES

This study aims to reduce the severity of injuries caused by and the frequency of rear-end vehicle collisions. A better collision prediction method is proposed by means of millimeter-wave radar sensors able to rapidly detect potential collisions and alert drivers. Implementation of the system would bring about a reduction in accidents and potentially reduce the severity of the accidents that cannot be avoided. The proposed collision avoidance system adopted millimeter-wave radar sensors to collect information on vehicle’s rear surroundings. The designed experimental device has several unique features. The device has a wide monitoring range, incorporates a continuous detection process, and contains a rapid warning system. A series of real-world experiments were performed on cars (Model: Tercel 1.5, Toyota) to demonstrate the monitoring efficiency and warning frequency of this device under several operating conditions. This study furthered the development of a safe technology for avoidance of rear-end collisions, and this offers a novel system which can be used in a variety of vehicles to reduce the frequency of rear-end vehicle collisions.
Studies on Layered Modulation for SVC Signals in DVB-S2 System

The paper describes a Layered Modulation using the SVC signals and studies the properties of the modulation with respect to several parameters by the computer simulation. The SVC signals will include a base layer signal and an enhancement signal, and the base layer signal is the more important one in its channel robustness. The parameters will include a carrier frequency, a bandwidth, power level, modulation type and code rate. We analyze the demodulating and decoding process of the Layered Modulation system through several scatter plots. And then we discuss the affect of the layer signal power difference to the BER performance, which also proves the base layer signal is more important than the enhancement layer signal.
