        Study on the Alternating Flow Hydraulics and Its New Potential Application in the Geotechnical Testing Field

        The alternating flow hydraulics (AFH) had demonstrated the unique features in the past. One of the most well-known inventions was the hydraulic machine-gun synchronizer, which had become the standard equipment of airplane during World War I. The studies on the AFH between 1960 and 1980 had trigged many researchers' interests and reached the summit. The disadvantages of the AFH like low efficiency and cooling difficulty had prevented the further development. Few people are engaged in studying the AFH at present. However, the unique characteristics of the AFH inspire the researchers to continuously explore the new special suitable applications. The overviews of the AFH and the new potential application in the geotechnical testing field have been discussed in this paper. First, the research results of the AFH in the past have been summarized. Then, the classifications of the AFH have been introduced in detail according to the working principle, the number of hydraulic transmission pipelines and the mode of input energy. The advantages and the disadvantages of the AFH have been discussed. A novel potential suitable application in the soil test field has been presented at last. The detailed designing ideas of a new dynamic trixial instrument have been given, which will be a more innovational and energy-saving plan according to the current studies. A series of simulation experiments have been done. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme for the new dynamic trixial instrument is feasible. The paper work will also give some inspirations in the reciprocating motion control system.

        O’Neill의 극에 등장하는 Everywoman의 전형들

        The Great God Brown is one of the most interesting but one of the most confusing of O’Neill’s plays. In this play all the characters use masks to dramatize the contrast between their external, or public selves, and their inner, or private selves. Cybel is a mixture of the goddess Cybele. the earth mother, and the eternal prostitute. A Moon for the Misbegotten combines the farcical with the tragic, the illusory with the real. Obviously a creature of myth. Josie combines all the contradictory elements of the eternal feminine, which each of O’Neill’s earlier heroines had embodied separately. Strange Interlude is best described, not as tragedy, nor even as realistic drama, but rather as a modern myth or morality play Engel has suggested the title: Everywoman. As she struggles toward self-realization, her problems become those of Everywoman Nina Leeds seems to embody the essence of the eternal feminine. In Desire Under the Elms we witness the dramatic clash of two opposite philosophies: Old Cabot’s Puritanism and Abbie’s worship of Dionysus, that is, a conflict between the stones and the elms. In the play, Abbie takes the place of Eben’s mother and mistress. Cybel, Josie, Nina and Abbie are the personification of Everywoman depicted in O’Neill’s plays.

        A Study on the Mask Symbolism in O’Neill’s The Great God Brown

        본 연구는 O’Neill 이 원초적인 곳에 바탕을 둔 인간의 사고와 행위를, mask 를 사용하여 무대에 표출한 가면극 The Great God Brown에 나타난 mask symbolism 을 고찰하여 이 극의 극적 상황에 따라 미묘하게 변하는 등장인물들의 심상변화를 연구해 봄으로써 O’Neill 의 비극, 그 중에서도 가면극에 대한 보다 깊은 이해를 얻는 데 그 목적을 두었다. 이 작품에서는 등장인물들의 내적 자아와 외적 자아가 mask 를 중심으로 상이하게 나타나며, 특히 mask 뒤에 숨겨진 고뇌와 번민에 찬 인간 본연의 모습을 살펴보기 위해서는 mask symbolism에 대한 분석 검토가 필연적이라 할 수 있다. 따라서, 본고에서는 mask symbolism을 The Dio-nysian Image 와 The Demi-God Image, 그리고 The Earth Mother Image 등 세 측면에서 분석 · 검토하고자 한다. 첫째로, The Dionysian Image 에서는 주인공 Dion Anthony 의 이중 성격 중에서 Christianity 가 부정하는 Dionysus 때문에 괴로워하고 번민하는 Dion의 성격을 Dionysian Image 에 촛점을 맞추어 분석하였으며, 둘째로, The Demi-God Image 에서는 Dion 의 antagonist 인 Brown의 성격을 Mephistopheles 의 측면에서 고찰하여, 그를 “the visionless demi-god of our new materialistic myth”의 symbol 로 조명해 보았으며, 세째로, The Earth Mother Image에서는, 가면을 썼을 때는 일개 창녀이나, 그 가면 밑의 본연의 모습은 영원한 Earth Mother 인 Cybel 의 성격을 분석 고찰해 보았다. The Great God Brown에서 O’Neill 은 mask 를 사용하여 인간 본성의 심연 속에 깊숙히 감추어진 갈등을 적나라하게 표출하였으며, 이 작품 속의 주인공 Dion 과 Brown이 다 같이 최후의 순간에는 Mother Earth 를 찾는 데 이 점에서도 잘 나타나 있듯이 작가 O’Neill 자신이 관심을 갖고 추구한 것은 인간과 인간의 관계가 아닌 인간과 신과의 관계인 것이다.

        Determination of reference enthalpies and thermal expansivity using molecular dynamic simulations in the distortion model of gas hydrates

        This work presents the determination of both reference chemical potential and temperature-dependent enthalpy changes of gas hydrates using molecular dynamics simulations. We introduced a method incorporating molecular dynamic (MD) simulations to the Lee-Holder distortion model for calculating the reference properties of single component structure II gas hydrates. The guest molecules affect the interaction between adjacent water molecules distorting the hydrate lattice, which requires diverse values of reference properties for different gas hydrates. We performed the simulation to validate the experimental data determining the reference chemical potential as well as the thermal expansivity of unit cell structure for structure II type gas hydrates. All simulations were performed using TIP4P water molecules at the reference temperature and pressure conditions. As an attempt to apply MD simulation to calculate the reference state of gas hydrate, we demonstrate lattice distortion of structure I and II gas hydrates. The reference chemical potential was generally found to increase with the size of the guest molecule. The temperature effect on the unit cell size, which will be used to calculate the enthalpy change of gas hydrate due to temperature, has been observed.

        A Study on Dielectric Constants of <tex> ${\rm Epoxy/SrTiO}_{3}$</tex> Composite for Embedded Capacitor Films (ECFs)

        <P>Epoxy/BaTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composites have been of great interest as embedded capacitor materials, mainly due to high dielectric constant of ceramic powders, and good process compatibility of epoxy with printed circuit boards (PCBs). However, one of the potential problems of epoxy/BaTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite is the dielectric relaxation at gigahertz range. In this paper, epoxy/SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite embedded capacitor films (ECFs) were fabricated for high-frequency applications. Dielectric constants of epoxy/SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite embedded capacitor films with various SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> particles loading for three different commercial SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> powders were measured, and experimental data were fitted to the Lichtenecker equation for the prediction of the effective dielectric constant of SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> powders in epoxy/ SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite ECFs. Using a rectangular cavity resonator method, dielectric constants of epoxy/SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite ECFs were measured at gigahertz range (1-10 GHz). At gigahertz frequencies, dielectric constants of epoxy/SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite ECFs were nearly constant. In contrast, epoxy/BaTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite ECFs showed decrease of dielectric constants above 5 GHz. Therefore, it is concluded that epoxy/SrTiO<SUB>3</SUB> composite ECFs can be more effectively to be applied for high-frequency applications.</P>

      • CEO Overconfidence or Private Information: Evidence from U.S. Property-Liability Insurance Companies

        This paper uses conventional measures of CEO overconfidence: option holdings-based and net stock purchase-based measures to examine the impact of CEOs who hold firm-specific risk on insurer’s risk-taking and firm performance in U.S. publicly traded property-liability insurance companies. We find that two CEO overconfidence measures are negatively associated with insurer’s risk-taking and positively related to firm performance. We also provide evidence that CEOs who maintain high exposure to firm-specific risk exploit their private information to time stock-option exercises in an effort to increase the cash payout from these exercises. Our overall results indicate that CEOs who have private information on their firms’ future earnings maximize their personal profits by postponing option exercises or buying additional stocks, and that they tend to take a lower risk to protect their personal wealth in property-liability insurance firms. Therefore, our findings suggest that it may not be CEO overconfidence, but rather the private information and the intention to control the company’s risk that drive our results.

      • Sigma-Delta (Σ-Δ) ADC for Complex Sensor Applications

        In this paper, a sigma-delta (Σ-Δ) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is presented with 14.97-bit accuracy. The ADC is composed of fourth-order single-loop single-bit sigma-delta (Σ-Δ) modulator and digital decimation filter. The modulator with an oversampling ratio of 128 and a signal bandwidth of 4㎑ has been designed in a 0.35㎛ CMOS technology. The designed decimation filter has been verified using an FPGA. The Σ-Δ modulator consumes 3㎽ from a single 3.3V supply voltage.

        William Butler Yeats’s Four Early Ballads

        예이츠는 초기에 발라드라는 제목의 시를 세 편을 1889년에 시집 십자 로 에 실었다. 일반적으로 예이츠의 발라드는 아일랜드의 역사, 문화, 전승민속에 근원 을 두고 있으며, 춤(무희)를 수반하지만 즐거움, 기쁨보다는 오 하트 신부, 가난한 여 인 몰 메기의 딸, 또 늙은 여우 사냥꾼의 죽음, 그리고 수많은 사람들의 임종 순간에 그들을 위하여 기도를 해 주던, 피로에 지친 길리건 신부의 인간적인 면 등을 주제로 한 슬픈 이야기를 소재로 한 것이 특징이다. In this essay, I read W. B. Yeats’s four ballads, “The Ballad of Father O’Hart,” “The Ballad of Moll Magee,” and “The Ballad of Fox Hunter” written in his early age and published in Crossways in 1889 and “The Ballad of Father Gilligan” in The Rose in 1893. Yeats’s ballads originated from Ireland’s history, culture, folklore, and so on. They were originally written to accompany dances, so they were composed in couplets with refrains in alternate lines. These refrains are sung by the dancers. But ironically these ballads give us grief, lamentation, and mourning rather than delights, since the material for the ballads is ‘death,’ such as, the death of Father O’Hart, Moll Magee’s just-born daughter, and a fox hunter or the people around Father Gilligan.

      • Safety diagnosis process for deteriorated buildings using a 3D scan-based reverse engineering model

        As the number of deteriorated buildings increases, the importance of safety diagnosis, maintenance, and the repair of buildings also increases. Traditionally, building condition assessments are performed by one person or one company and various inspections are needed. This entails a subjective judgment by the inspector, resulting in different assessment results, poor objectivity and a lack of reliability. Therefore, this study proposed a method to bring about accurate grading results of building conditions. The limitations of visual inspection and condition assessment processes previously conducted were identified by reviewing existing studies. Building defect data was collected using the reverse-engineered three-dimensional (3D) model. The accuracy of the results was verified by comparing them with the actual evaluation results. The results show a 50% time-saving to the same area with an accuracy of approximately 90%. Consequently, defect data with high objectivity and reliability were acquired by measuring the length, area, and width. In addition, the proposed method can improve the efficiency of the building diagnosis process.
