      • Nucleotide variations and gene expression differences on conserved regulatory sequence motifs between Glycine max and G. soja

        Recent release of whole genome draft sequences in legume species have led comparative genome studies among legume plants including Glycine max, G. soja, Cajanus cajan and Medicago truncatula. The majority of comparative genomic researches have been conducted based on synteny of coding sequences and coding sequence variations may be one of major forces for speciation and evolution. However, non-coding sequences have been also reported to be important phenotypic regulators. Especially, since short sequence motifs in the promoter regions are highly conserved, they are suggested to be another resources of interests in comparative studies. In this study, we predicted the conserved short sequence motifs by BLASTN algorithm using dicot promoter database from Softberry (http://www.softberry.com). A total of 37,396 conserved short sequence motifs were identified onto 2 kb upstreams of 46,367 high confident gene model of G. max (cv. Williams 82). Meanwhile, whole genome of 7 soybean landraces (G. max) and 7 wild soybean genotypes (G. soja) were sequenced at low depth of less than ten using Illumina Hiseq 2000. Among these genotypes, nucleotide variations were identified in predicted conserved regulatory motifs by mapping of short reads to the reference genome sequence using the Samtools program (http://samtools.sourceforge.net/). Fifteen and two genes, which have SNPs in regulatory motifs and no SNP in coding sequence, were identified by comparisons of inter-species and intra-species, respectively. qRT-PCR experiments are in progress for investigating differences of these 17 genes expressions at transcriptional level.

        One-step synthesis of nano-porous monolithic polyimide aerogel

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A facile one-step method for synthesis of a porous monolithic polyimide aerogel was successfully developed. The specific thermal curing, slow desiccating process and swelling method were used in synthesizing monolithic polyimide aerogel without any additional chemical reaction to create a connected structure among the polyimide-based spherical aerogel microparticles. Using this method, the monolithic polyimide aerogel can be easily fabricated whilst using no additional chemicals for crosslinking. This type of polyimide aerogel was produced homogeneously by the polyimidization of pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4′-oxydianiline (ODA). The synthesized porous monolithic polyimide aerogel has many good properties which could be used in various industries, as it maintained a high thermal decomposition temperature (10% weight decomposition temperature: T<SUB>d10%</SUB>) of approximately 577 °C and a glass transition temperature (T<SUB>g</SUB>) of 432 °C, with bulk density of 490.7 kg/m<SUP>3</SUP>, porosity of approximately 45% and average pore size of 4 nm (by nitrogen adsorption test) of polymer and 157 nm (by mercury intrusion method) of space observed in FE-SEM image. Also, the monolithic polyimide aerogel had an excellent oil-adsorbing capacity of 150%, and the adsorbed oil could be separated easily using a simple drying process. The dried monolithic polyimide aerogel showed significant recoverability and reusability of adsorbed oil. In addition, the monolithic polyimide aerogel exhibited high mechanical resistance such that the structure can withstand a high pressure greater than 122.3 kPa, under which the monolithic polyimide aerogel (MPA) was compressed but did not break. This type of MPA shows excellent thermal, mechanical properties and great processability, and could be the new candidate for high performance materials in various industries, especially catalyst field.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Unlike other aerogel synthesis, in this study, the polyimide aerogel monolith is created without adding any other chemicals. </LI> <LI> The polyimide aerogel monolith has excellent thermal, mechanical properties and great processability for application in various industries. </LI> <LI> The polyimide aerogel monolith synthesized with homogeneity fully maintained in very convenient and easy method. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

      • Clinical Implications of Quantitative Electroencephalography and Current Source Density in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease

        <P>This study examined whether quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) and current source density (CSD) can be used to evaluate symptom severity in Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Thirty AD patients (13 mild and 17 moderate severity) and 30 normal control (NC) subjects were recruited. The Korean version of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Packet and the Global Deterioration Scale were measured. qEEG and CSD data were analyzed in five frequency bands: delta (1-3?Hz), theta (4-7?Hz), alpha (8-12?Hz), beta (13-25?Hz), and gamma (30-50?Hz). Compared with the NC subjects, the moderate AD patients had significantly increased theta and decreased beta power. Compared with the mild AD patients, the moderate AD patients had significantly decreased beta power. In the AD patients, the theta power was significantly correlated with a poor performance for global cognition; however, beta power was positively correlated with a good performance for global cognition, attention, memory, visuospatial function, and executive function. The CSD of the theta band in the superior temporal gyrus, transverse temporal gyrus, insula, postcentral gyrus, cuneus, and lingual gyrus was significantly different between NC subjects and moderate AD patients and between mild and moderate AD patients. The theta CSD of these regions was significantly correlated with a poor performance for global cognition, memory, visuospatial function, execution, and language. The results suggest that qEEG and the CSD of the theta and beta bands are useful biological markers in AD patients.</P>

        The effects of hydroxyl groups on the thermal and optical properties of poly(amide-imide)s with high adhesion for transparent films

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, transparent thin films for coating material are synthesized by adding bulky CF<SUB>3</SUB> and hydroxyl groups intro into poly(amide-imide)s. As expected, these poly(amide-imide)s show higher shear adhesion and higher glass transition temperatures than the neat poly(amide-imide) due to hydrogen bonding of the hydroxyl groups. In addition, the modification to the poly(amide-imide) structure leads to only slight decreases in transmittance and yellow index.</P> <P>Consequently, the successful synthesis of poly(amide-imide)s with wide applications as transparent coating materials due to their optical properties and high adhesion is demonstrated. Transparent flexible display and coating products can be manufactured with poly(amide-imide)s having high reliability and a low chance of cracking due to their favorable thermal properties.</P>

        New continuous process developed for synthesizing sponge-type polyimide membrane and its pore size control method via non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS)

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, the improvement of synthesizing method of sponge-type polyimide (PI) membrane and its newly developed pore size control techniques are mainly described. The sponge-type polyimide membrane with large pore size (0.1–10 µm) and high permeability was successfully synthesized by using non-solvent phase separation method (NIPS) in continuous process and its full polyimidization is confirmed via Fourier-transform infrared technique. The theoretical approach in this research induced by Jurin's law which describes the height of a liquid within a thin capillary tube. In this theory, the pore size of membrane is highly influenced by the interactive tension between the polymer and solvents during synthesizing process of polymer membrane. There are two ways of controlling pore size established from Jurin's law. The validity of the application of Jurin's law was proven via comparison with theoretical and experimental data.         This paper is the academic result of basic study for setting up teaching method cultivating the education for human nature through favorite motto with related to the 2015 curriculum. The aim of this study is to establish a useful teaching method in from the elementary to the secondary school. In order to obtain a meaningful effect in aspect of the academic theory this research should be required to educational verification in a variety of school based for the reality and practical materials. But as we noted in the introduction, the researchers carried out the academic approach for the foundation or basis on the subject of research, in the future for the application and practice continue to of research will be deal with by the scenario. Therefore, in this paper, the concept of human nature set up, and as educational methodology for using the motto and the learning materials is provided by the research suggested to the elementary and secondary school teachers as the result. We hope that teachers will establish the methodology to ensure in human nature education which outlined eight different core values suggested by the education Government. The researchers keep on proceed this study on the motto education for the educational methodology for getting the meaningful effects.

        과밀 효과와 양안 경합의 이심률별 상관관계

        과밀 효과란, 목표 자극의 주위에 다른 방해 자극들을 제시함으로써 목표 자극의 지각 경험을 방해하는 것이다. 양안 경합은 양 눈에 다른 형태의 자극을 제시했을 때, 겹쳐져서 보이거나 하지 않고, 의식 내에서 교대로 보이게 되는 현상이다. 이 두 현상의 상관관계를 측정하기 위해 실험을 수행하였다. 이심률을 독립변수로 하여 이심률마다 여덟 개의 위치에서 두 가지의 효과를 측정하였고, 이심률 2˚에서 정적 상관관계가 있다는 것을 관찰하였다. 본 연구는 그간 소홀히 하였던 과밀 효과와 양안 경합의 관계에 대해 체계적으로 본격적으로 분석한 연구이며, 의식의 측정치로서의 과밀 효과와 양안 경합에 대해 규명할 수 있는 발판을 제공하였다. Crowding effect is the impairment of peripheral object identification due to nearby objects. Binocular rivalry is a phenomenon in which perception alternates between two different objects presented separately to each eye. The purpose of this study was to investigate the correlation between these two phenomena. We measured the magnitudes of visibility index of these two effects at 8 different locations of 3 different eccentricities (2, 5, and 10°). Significant positive correlation between the two measurements was found only near the fovea (2°). Our study is the demonstration to show relationship between crowding and binocular rivalry.

        일반논문 : 맹자(孟子) 성선설(性善說)의 근거-량심(良心)

        공맹이후 유학사상에서 인간은 배우는 존재이며, 도덕적인 존재로 정의된다. 공자의 사상이 집약된 <「논어(論語)」>가 학습의 문제에 대한 언급으로 시작되며, 인간의 윤리적 행위의 올바름에 대한 내용들이 주로 포함되고 있다는 사실을 인정한다면, 인간을 배움의 존재와 윤리도덕의 실천자로 규정하는 것은 공자 이래 유학사상의 주요한 학문적 전통이라고 할 수 있다. 공자는 인간의 어떤 행위가 최고의 도덕적 규범인 <인(仁)>에 해당하며, 인간의 이상적 윤리적 목표를 현실사회에서 실현하기 위해서는 어떻게 행동할 것인가에 관한 다양한 담론들을 우리들에게 제공하였다. <맹자(孟子)>는 윤리 도덕적 행위의 심리학적이고 철학적 근거를 제시함으로써 공자 이래의 유가사상의 학문적 깊이를 보완한 사상가이다. 그는 성품(性)과 마음(心)의 문제에 대한 해명으로부터 인간의 도덕적 문제를 해결하고 윤리적인 사회를 형성하는 방법에 관한 깊이 있는 논의 를 전개하였다. <성선설(性善說)>의 확립과 마음에 대한 깊이 있는 해명들이 이에 속한다. 맹자가 인간의 윤리도덕적 문제들을 설명하기 위해 사용한 인성론의 구조에는 마음과 성품의 관계에 대한 문제가 중심을 이루고 있다고 볼 수 있다. 이 논문은 유학의 인간 이해에 대한 정통적 이론으로 평가되는 맹자성선설의 근거에는 마음에 대한 다양한 분석, 특히 ‘<양심(良心)>’이라는 개념을 창출하여 인간의 윤리 도덕적 행위를 설명하는 방식이 엄존해 있음을 고찰하였으며, 이를 위한 방법론으로 맹자의 인간이해와 윤리이론의 중심을 이루고 있는 인성론과 심성론의 주요 문제들을 ‘양심’과의 연계라는 관점에서 해명하였다. 논자는 이미 이 주제와 관련있는 선행연구(「맹자 윤리사상의 특징」- 良心을 중심으로(「동양고전연구」(제52집), 2013)를 발표하였다. 이 논문은 이 연구성과를 원용하면서 성선설로 대표되는 맹자 윤리학설을 이해하는 핵심적 개념으로 ‘양심’을 제시하고, ‘양심’이 맹자 윤리사상의 핵심인 성선설의 철학적 근거임을 밝히고자 하였다. 구체적인 연구방법 및 주요내용은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중국전국시대의 사상가인 맹자(372∼ 289B.C.)가 ‘양심’이라는 개념을 최초로 유학사상에 등록시켰으며, 이후 ‘양심’이라는 용어는 동서양을 막론하고, 철학과 심리학, 그리고 윤리학의 주요 학술용어로 사용되고 있으며, 둘째, 맹자의 사상체계 속에서 ‘양심’은 유가사상의 대표적인 도덕적 덕목인 <인의예지(仁義禮智)>와 깊은 연계를 이루고 있음을 해명하고자 한다. 셋째, 성선설을 주창하는 맹자의 사유구조에서 도덕적 마음의 의미를 <사단(四端)>과 <사덕(四德)>으로 분배하여 설명하고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 마지막으로, 성선설의 이론적 해명을 위해 ‘양심’과 ‘성선’의 윤리적 의미를 고찰하였다. This paper is focused on reading the conscience of the system in Mencius`` moral theory. In confucian tradition Mencius had shown to us the innate emotional good mind for developing moral act of human at first. That proper and good mind(良心) by Legge``s translation is connected with the human good nature. Mencius had thought that human nature is intrinsically good, the moral doing is the ability to do get the four moral value like the inherent morality of human being which driven by the moral mind. In this paper, I have presented Mencius`` moral theory which based on the proper and good mind(良心). Mencius had firstly originated the concept, the proper and good mind(良心) in his writing. This concept is mainly used to elaborate the basis of human moral act in nowadays. Mencius said that Nature (性) is rendered moral by humans’ moralistic interpretation. Mencius insisted that morality is merely determined by human mind and that there are no moral truths which is independent of human judgments and beliefs. In this point, in the Mencius`` moral theory the moral mind had the essential status for understanding the moral issues of human acts.

        Gender Difference in Event Related Potentials to Masked Emotional Stimuli in the Oddball Task

        Objective-We investigated gender differences in event-related potential (ERP) responses to subliminally presented threat-related stimuli. Methods-Twenty-four participants were presented with threat-related and neutral pictures for a very brief period of time (17 ms). To explore gender differences in ERP responses to subliminally presented stimuli, we examined six ERP components [P1, N170, N250, P300, Early Posterior Negativity (EPN) and Late Positive Potential (LPP)]. Results-The result revealed that only female participants showed significant increases in the N170 and the EPN in response to subliminally presented threat-related stimuli compared to neutral stimuli. Conclusion-Our results suggest that female participants exhibit greater cortical processing of subliminally presented threat-related stimuli than male participants.
