Superconducting properties of thin film MgB2 superconductors irradiated with 45 MeV -particle beam were studied. After the irradiation, enhancement of the critical current density and pinning force was observed, scaling close to strong pinning formula. Double logarithmic plots of the maximum pinning force density with irreversible magnetic field show a power law behavior close to carbon-doped MgB2 film or polycrystals. Variation of normalized pinning force density in the reduced magnetic field suggests scaling formulas for strong pinning mechanism like planar defects. We also observed a rapid decay of critical current density as the vortex lattice constant decreases, due to the strong interaction between vortices and increasing magnetic field.
Function and therapeutic development of exosomes for cancer therapy

Exosomes are extracellular vesicles, 50–150 nmin diameter, released by most cells. Exosomes contain severalintracellular components, including DNA, RNA, andproteins, which refl ect the parent cell’s status and contributeto intercellular communication. Cancers are associated withhigh morbidity and mortality rates worldwide. Owing to ahigh survival rate, cancer treatment by immune modulationof the tumor microenvironment has recently received a lot ofattention. Exosomes’ role in immunological control is alsobeing studied extensively. Exosomes play a role in cancerimmunecell communication. Through intracellular communication,exosomes promote tumor growth, metastasis, angiogenesis,and drug resistance. In addition, innate immunecell-derived exosomes and adaptive immune cell exosomeshave an anti-tumorigenic activity. Exosome-related tumormicroenvironment drugs are being developed, includinginhibitors of exosomal release, tumor-derived exosomes, andimmune cell-derived exosome engineering, although thereare still some obstacles to overcome. We describe in thisreview the signifi cance of exosomes in the tumor microenvironment. We also summarize current studies on anticancerimmune drug development and the challenges in developingexosome-related drugs.

Many complications have been reported during or after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, including infection, bleeding, tibial tunnel widening, arthrofibrosis, and graft failure. However, arterial injury has been rarely reported. This paper reports a case of an anterior tibial arterial injury during bicortical tibial drilling in arthroscopic ACL reconstruction, associated with an asymptomatic occlusion of the popliteal artery. The patient had a vague pain which led to delayed diagnosis of compartment syndrome and delayed treatment with fasciotomy. All surgeons should be aware of these rare but critical complications because the results may be disastrous like muscle necrosis as in this case.
Soluble Epithin/PRSS14 Secreted from Cancer Cells Contains Active Angiogenic Potential

Epithin (PRSS14/matriptase/ST14), a type II membrane protein, is involved in progression of epithelial cancers and metastasis as well as in the normal epidermal barrier function. When activated, it translocates into the cell-cell contacts and sheds into media. In order to understand the specific mechanism during tumor progression, we tested the angiogenic potential of secreted form of epithin. Epithin produced from the cancer cells shed more in hy-poxia and induced motility of endothelial cells. Epithin enhanced the migration and invasion of mouse and bovine endothelial cells without cell proliferation. Furthermore, soluble epithin induced endothelial differentiation in the assay of the human endothelial microvessel-like tube for-mation and in that of the chicken chorioallantoic mem-brane. The knock-down of epithin in the 427 thymoma cell line abolished the protease activity of secreted epithin fraction, reduced the invasion of endothelial cells through matrigel, and tube formation activity. Only specific anti-bodies abolished the migration of endothelial cell and the vessel morphogenesis, suggesting that epithin specifically functions in these systems. Therefore, we propose that the secreted epithin in the hypoxic cancer microenvironment plays a role as a proangiogenic factor, and can be modu-lated with specific antibodies.

The phylogenetic relationship of the suborder Anisoptera distributed on Jeju Island, Korea, was analyzed by comparing partial mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences. The length of the partial mitochondrial 16S rRNA genes for the 27 species of the Anisoptera studied ranged from 405 to 421 base pairs (bp). No intra-genus length-variations were identified in the genera Anax and Orthetrum, while the genes of Somatochlora and Sympetrum displayed lengths of 411 to 412 and 406 to 411 bp, respectively. The GC content of the partial mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene ranged from 26.76% to 30.83%. A parsimony analysis of the unambiguously aligned mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene sequences from 28 species, including outgroup species, produced eight equally most parsimonious trees. The strict consensus tree had three large independent groups: group I (family Aeshnidae), group II (family Libellulidae), and group III (family Corduliidae). Interestingly, the eight species of the genus Sympetrum were clearly distinguishable from the other species. The strict consensus tree, based on the mitochondrial 16S rRNA gene sequences, contained monophyletic groups. These results concurred with previous studies published by several researchers that were based on morphological characteristics.
