The present study aimed to identify the roles of the storage mite Tyrophagus putrescentiae (Tp) in relation to human skin diseases, such as atopic dermatitis. We examined the effects of T. putrescentiae extracts (TpE) on the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and their mRNA expression in human immune cells. Human monocytic THP-1 and eosinophilic EoL-1 cells were challenged with TpE and the inflammatory cytokines, interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) secreted in culture supernatant were analyzed using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The mRNA levels in the cell cultures were also measured via reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In the THP-1 cells, the TpE significantly induced the secretion of IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 in a time- and dose-dependent manner. It also stimulated increases in the expression levels of the IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1 mRNA. However, while the TpE induced IL-8 and MCP-1 mRNA levels in the EoL-1 cells, it did not induce IL-6 expression. Using Western blot analysis, we confirmed the activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), in response to TpE challenge of the THP-1 cells. Collectively, our results show that TpE challenge elicits inflammatory response in the human monocytic THP-1 and eosinophilic EoL-1 cells, and it induces increased production of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6, IL-8, and MCP-1.
소음인(少陰人) 승양익기부자탕(升陽益氣附子湯)과 관계부자리중탕(官桂附子理中湯)이 양허증(陽虛證)에 미치는 영향(影響)에 관(關)한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究)

In order to investigate experimentally the effects of Sung-yangikgibujat'ang (SIT) and Kwangyebujalijungt'ang (KBT) on Yang-insufficient syndrome (陽虛證) induced by Hydrocortisone acetate (H.A.) in experimental animals (Mice and Rat), the author experimented various activities. Delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH), Rosette forming cells (RFC), hemagglutinin (HA) titers, Hemolysin (HL) titers, Body weight, Whole blood viscosity, Plasma Viscosity, Hematocrit, RBC, Albumin, Total protein, Triglyceride, cholesterol and Glucose were measured. The results summerized as follows; 1. In DTH and RFC all the experimental groups were increased significantly in comparison to the H.A.-treated group. 2. In HA titers SIT_treated group were increased significantly and KBT-treated group showed increasing tendancy, but showed no significance. 3. In HL titers all the experimental groups showed increasing tendancy, but showed no significance. 4. In body weight all the experimental groups showed increasing tendancy, but showed no significance. 5. In whole blood viscosity all the experimental groups were decreased significantly in comparison to the H.A.-treated group. 5. In plasma viscosity KBT-treated group were decreased significantly and SIT-treated group showed decreasing tendancy, but showed no significance. 7. In Hematocrit SIT-treated group were decreased significantly and KBT-treated group showed decreasing tendancy, but showed no significance. 8. In RBC, albumin and cholesterol all the experimental groups were decreased significantly in comparison to the H.A.-treated group. 9. In total protein and triglyceride KBT-treated group were decreased significantly and SIT-treated group showed decreasing tendancy, but showed no significance. 10. In Glucose SIT-treated group were decreased significantly and KBT-treated group showed decreasing tendancy, but showed no significance. From above findings, it has been demonstrated that Sungyangikgibujat'ang and Kwangyebujalijungt'ang seem to produce the effectiveness on the recovery from depression of the cell-mediated immune response, blood circulation and energy metabolic rate, induced by Hydrocortisone acetate, and in the humoral immune response Sungyangikgibujat'ang have the effectiveness on the recovery, and in cellular component of blood Sungyangikgibujat'ang was more effective than Kwangyebujalijungt' ang, and in plasma of blood Kwangyebujalijungt'ang was more effective than Sungyangikgibujat'ang. Therefore it is suggested that Sungyangikgibujat'ang and Kwangyebujalijungt'ang have the effectiveness on the recovery from Yang-insufficient syndrome more or less.

The objective of this study was to propose the best methodology for estimating soil organic carbon stocks during environmental assessment for development projects. We compared three methodologies which were developed by Korea Environment Corporation(2010), Korea Forest Research Institute (2006), and Jin-Hyun Jung (1998). We found that the methodology developed by Jin-Hyun Jung (1998) shows the worst performance and the methodology of Korea Forest Research Institute (2006) does not reflect a variety of soil types and land use characteristics shown in development project plans. Therefore, we propose that the methodology developed by Korea Environment Corporation (2010) is the most reasonable one because it is internationally accepted and used for local governments to make the inventory of greenhouse gases as well as to set up its reduction strategy.

<P>Obesity has become a major health threat in developed countries. However, current medications for obesity are limited because of their adverse effects. Interest in natural products for the treatment of obesity is thus rapidly growing. Korean Medicine (KM) is characterized by the wide use of herbal formulas. However, the combination rule of herbal formulas in KM lacks experimental evidence. According to <I>Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica</I>, the earliest book of herbal medicine, <I>Veratrum nigrum</I> (VN) has antagonistic features against <I>Panax ginseng</I> (PG), and the PG-VN pair is strictly forbidden. In this study, we have shown the effects of PG, VN, and their combination on obesity in high-fat (HF) diet-induced obese mice and in 3T3-L1 cells. PG, VN, and PG-VN combination significantly reduced weight gain and the fat pad weight in HF diet-induced obese mice. They also significantly decreased lipid accumulation and the expressions of two major adipogenesis factors, PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I>, in 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, the PG-VN combination had synergistic effects compared with the mixture of extracts of PG and VN on inhibition of PPAR<I><I>γ</I></I> and C/EBP<I><I>α</I></I> expressions at lower doses. These results indicate a new potential anti-obese pharmacotherapy and also provide scientific evidence supporting the usage of herbal combinations instead of mixtures in KM.</P>

The purpose of this research aims to reveal how radish kimchi (Jong-ga) differs in Jong-ga recipes and old cookbooks. To accomplish this, old cookbooks ("Soowoonjabbang", "Jusiksiui", "Eumsikbangmunnira", "Siuejunsuh", "Banchandeungsok", and "Buinpilji") were reviewed and 8 Jong-ga recipes (Seogye Park Se-dang from the Bannam Park clan Jong-ga, Myungsukgong from the Changnyeong Jo clan Jong-ga, Nampa Park Jae-gyu from the Milyang Park clan Jong-ga, Geunggudang Kim Joong-jeung from the Gwangsan Kim clan Jong-ga, Dongchundang Song Jun-gil from the Eunjin Song clan Jong-ga, Myeongjae Yun Jung from the Papyung Yun clan Jong-ga, Daeseunggong Ryu Cha-dal from the Munhwa Ryu clan Jong-ga, Inmukjae Son Sung-jeung from the Milseong Son clan Jong-ga) from five areas were reviewed. We classified the radish kimchi into five categories, radish kimchi, Dongchimi, kkakdugi, Seokbakji and Nabak kimchi and other kimchi. According to old cookbooks, most kimchi was made with radish, cabbage, cucumber, pear, yuju, fish meat, and salt. Modern Jong-ga is made of seasoned radish, sticky rice paste, seafood, sugar, powdered pepper, fish sauce and salt. This study helps to understand notable clans' cultures via their recipes for kimchi.
Positive feedback regulation of Akt‐FMRP pathway protects neurons from cell death

Neurochem.</I> (2012) <B>123</B>, 226–238.</P><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Fragile X syndrome (FXS), the most common single genetic cause of mental retardation and autistic spectrum disease, occurs when <I>FMR1</I> gene is mutated. <I>FMR1</I> encodes fragile X mental retardation protein (FMRP) which regulates translation of mRNAs playing important roles in the development of neurons as well as formation and maintenance of synapses. To examine whether FMRP regulates cell viability, we induced apoptosis in rat primary cortical neurons with glutamate <I>in vitro</I> and with middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) in striatal neurons <I>in vivo</I>. Both conditions elicited a rapid, but transient FMRP expression in neurons. This up‐regulated FMRP expression was abolished by pre‐treatment with PI3K and Protein Kinase B (Akt) inhibitors: LY294002, Akt inhibitor IV, and VIII. Reduced FMRP expression <I>in vitro</I> or <I>in vivo</I> using small hairpin <I>Fmr1</I> virus exacerbated cell death by glutamate or MCAO, presumably <I>via</I> hypophosphorylation of Akt and reduced expression of B‐cell lymphoma‐extra large (Bcl‐xL). However, over‐expression of FMRP using enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP)‐FMRP constructs alleviated cell death, increased Akt activity, and enhanced Bcl‐xL production. The pro‐survival role of Akt‐dependent up‐regulation of FMRP in glutamate‐stimulated cultured neuron as well as in ischemic brain may have a clinical importance in FXS as well as in neurodegenerative disorders and traumatic brain injury.</P>

AIM: Fimasartan is a selective angiotensin II receptor blocker. Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), which is used to treat hypertension and edematous conditions, is coadministered with many antihypertensive agents. METHODS: An open-label, randomized, multiple-dosing, 2-arm, 1-sequence, 2-period study was conducted to assess the effects of fimasartan (240 mg) on HCTZ (25 mg) or vice versa in 18 and 14 healthy male volunteers, respectively. During each drug administration period, drugs were given once daily for 7 days, with a 7-day washout period between the 2 administration periods. RESULTS: The respective geometric mean ratios of fimasartan for AUC&tgr;,ss and Cmax,ss with HCTZ were 1.30 [90% confidence interval (CI), 0.84–2.01] and 1.17 (90% CI, 0.93–1.47) compared with fimasartan alone. The respective geometric mean ratios of HCTZ for AUC&tgr;,ss and Cmax,ss with fimasartan were 0.94 (90% CI, 0.84–1.04) and 0.88 (90% CI, 0.80–0.97) compared with HCTZ alone. Plasma renin activity indicated no significant differences between fimasartan monotherapy and coadministered treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Fimasartan administered alone or in combination with HCTZ was well tolerated at the described dosages. Coadministration of fimasartan increased the urinary excretion of HCTZ and urine volume, but these observations are unlikely to have any clinical relevance.
