This study is the fifth part of a series on Gerromorpha from Egypt. It includes a taxonomic review of family Veliidae that was recorded from Egypt with references to their habitats and distribution. Two genera: Microvelia Westwood & Rhagovelia Mayr and 6 species: M. gracillima Reuter; M. popovi Brown; M. macani Brown; M. pygmaea (Dufour); M. waelbroecki Kirkaldy & R. nigricans (Burmeister) are confirmed from Egypt. Microvelia macani Brown was recorded from Africa and Egypt for the first time. Keys for the identification of the subfamilies, genera and all species are given. Illustrations, and scanning electron microphotographs are provided.

Microwave-assisted synthesis of novel porous organic polymers for effective selective capture of CO2

Performing carbon dioxide (CO2) capture in an environmentally benign and cost-effective way is challengingowing to several factors including selectivity. Thus, the development of polymers that providehigh capacity and selectivity for the removal of CO2 gas is important. N-based porous polymers arepromising for CO2 capture due to their abundant porosity, variable surface characteristics, and great stability. Herein, porous organic polymers were synthesized by microwave-assisted Freidel-Crafts alkylationof 2,20-bipyridine and pyrrole with dimethoxymethane as a cross-linker. The synthesized polymers werecharacterized by Fourier transform infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, thermogravimetric analyzers,and surface analyzers based on Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory (BET). The porous polymers exhibitedhigh surface areas of 580 – 930 m2/g. The polymers showed high ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST)selectivity of 53 – 63 toward CO2 over N2 at 1 bar and 298 K under flue gas composition. Whereas theselectivity toward CO2 over CH4 at 1 bar and 298 K under natural gas composition was 12 – 18. The synthesizedpolymers achieved exceptional H2O adsorption capacity at P/P0 = 0.9 and 293 K of 35 – 45 mmol/g. The results reveal the polymers provide promising candidates for the CO2 capture from various mixtures,such as flue gas and natural gas.

This study is the conclusion of a planned series on Gerromorpha from Egypt. A list of Gerromorpha is given with notes on their habitats and distribution. A total of 5 families, 9 genera and 20 species are recorded from Egypt, of which Gerris costae Herrich-Schaeffer (Gerridae) is described as new to Egypt.

The main target of this paper is to allow renewable energy resources (RES) to participate eff ectively within hybrid micro grids via an optimal proportional integral- derivative (PID) controller. This paper proposes two techniques of optimal PID controllers in a hybrid renewable generation energy system. These techniques are particle swarm optimization (PSO) and lightning attachment procedure optimization (LAPO). The hybrid renewable generation energy system in this study includes a photovoltaic source, wind turbine, and battery storage, which are connected to a point of common coupling via DC/DC boost converters. The controller at the inverter consists of a current controller and voltage source controller, which results in three PID gains at each controller. In order to obtain the PID gains, a time domain objective function is formulated in terms of the voltage, and current errors. The obtained results with the individual advanced optimization LAPO and PSO algorithm are compared. The results display that the developed LAPO algorithms give better results compared to the conventional PSO at the input and output current, voltage, and power. All the results have been taken under several operating conditions of wind turbine (wind speed) and solar sun (changing irradiance and temperature).

A survey was conducted to determine the status ofLucerne transient streak virus (LTSV) in three highyieldingalfalfa regions in central Saudi Arabia (Riyadh,Qassim, and Hail) during 2014. Three hundredand eight symptomatic alfalfa, and seven Sonchus oleraceussamples were collected. DAS-ELISA indicatedthat 59 of these samples were positive to LTSV. Twoisolates of LTSV from each region were selected formolecular studies. RT-PCR confirmed the presence ofLTSV in the selected samples using a specific primerpair. Percentage identity and homology tree comparisonsrevealed that all Saudi isolates were more closelyrelated to each other but also closely related to the Canadianisolate-JQ782213 (97.1–97.6%) and the NewZealand isolate-U31286 (95.8–97.1%). ComparingSaudi isolates of LTSV with ten other sobemovirusesbased on the coat protein gene sequences confirmedthe distant relationship between them. Eleven out offourteen plant species used in host range study werepositive to LTSV. This is the first time to documentthat Trifolium alexandrinum, Nicotiana occidentalis,Chenopodium glaucum, and Lathyrus sativus are newhost plant species for LTSV and that N. occidentalisbeing a good propagative host for it.

Over recent years, enormous amounts of research in wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been conducted, due to its multifarious applications such as in environmental monitoring, object tracking, disaster management, manufacturing, monitoring and control. In some of WSN applications dependent the energy-efficient and link reliability are demanded. Hence, this paper presents a routing protocol that considers these two criteria. We propose a new mechanism called Reliable Routing Scheme for Energy-Balanced (RRSEB) to reduce the packets dropped during the data communications. It is based on Swarm Intelligence (SI) using the Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) method. The RRSEB is a self-adaptive method to ensure the high routing reliability in WSNs, if the failures occur due to the movement of the sensor nodes or sensor node`s energy depletion. This is done by introducing a new method to create alternative paths together with the data routing obtained during the path discovery stage. The goal of this operation is to update and offer new routing information in order to construct the multiple paths resulting in an increased reliability of the sensor network. From the simulation, we have seen that the proposed method shows better results in terms of packet delivery ratio and energy efficiency.

This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to examine the effect of the antioxidant alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) on various cardiometabolic risk factors and hormonal parameters in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). We searched PubMed, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science databases without language restrictions until May 2023 to find randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the impact of ALA supplementation on anthropometric, glycemic, lipid, oxidative stress, and hormonal parameters in women with PCOS. Outcomes were summarized using the standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) in a random-effects model. An I2 statistic of >60% established significant between-study heterogeneity. The overall certainty of the evidence for each outcome was determined using the grading of recommendations, assessment, development, and evaluations system. Seven RCTs met the inclusion criteria. The ALA group had significant reductions in fasting blood sugar (fasting blood sugar (FBS), n=7 RCTs, SMD, -0.60; 95% CI, -1.10 to -0.10; I2=63.54%, moderate certainty of evidence) and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), n=4 RCTs, SMD, -2.03; 95% CI, -3.85 to -0.20; I2=96.32%, low certainty of evidence) compared with the control group. However, significant differences were observed between the groups in body mass index, insulin, estrogen, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, testosterone, low-density lipoprotein, highdensity lipoprotein, triglyceride, total cholesterol, malondialdehyde, or total antioxidant capacity profiles. ALA supplementation improves FBS and HOMA-IR levels in women with PCOS. ALA consumption is an effective complementary therapy for the management of women with PCOS.

Female mosquitoes feed on human blood, which can be collected to analyze human short tandem repeat (STR) sequences; these are specific to each human individual. Analysis of STRs might help in identification of a person found near a crime scene. Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens mosquitoes fed on human blood were cultured at 18°C or 40°C (median temperature for summer and winter time in Riyadh governorate, Saudi Arabia) for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h. In A. aegypti, human DNA concentration was reduced with time at both temperatures. At 18°C, we obtained full STR profiles up to 48 h post feeding on human blood while none of the 16 loci were obtained at 72 h. At 40°C, we missed six sites at 12 h after blood sucking, 12 at 24 h, and 15 at 48 h and 72 h. In C. pipiens cultured at 18°C, full profiles were developed up to 48 h following blood feeding while we could not amplify five sites at 72 h. At 40°C, mortality among females was 50% at 24 h and 100% at both 48 h and 72 h; however, we had full profiles in all samples including dead insects. This research addressed the possibility of using mosquitoes in forensic research by DNA genotyping by changing the mosquito culturing temperature and mosquito genus. Our findings proved that different types of mosquito change the temporal pattern of STR analysis and showed that the mosquito culturing temperature affects the integrity of DNA for STR analysis.

Tetracera scandens is a medicinal shrub that belongs to Dilleniaceae. The leaves of the plant have been traditionally used in the treatment of diabetes mellitus in Malaysia. The conventional quality control analysis of medicinal plants that relies on the quantification of few major metabolites is considered time-consuming since it requires extensive sample preparation and neglects the possible impacts that the minor metabolites could have on the activity. This study was aimed to investigate the α-glucosidase inhibitory (AGI) potential of different hydromethanolic extracts of T. scandens leaves and to establish a predictive multivariate model that could be used for the quality evaluation of T. scandens leaf based on the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra of its extracts. Different solvent ratios (0%, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and 100% methanol in water) were used to prepare a total of 36 extracts. The AGI potential and the FT-IR fingerprint spectrum were acquired for each extract. A four components orthogonal partial least squares (OPLS) model (1 + 3 + 0) with R2Y of 0.951 and Q2Y of 0.916 was established to describe the correlation between the fingerprint FT-IR spectra of different T. scandens extracts and their corresponding AGI activities. The carbon-halide, carbon–oxygen single bonds, as well as the hydroxyl and carbonyl groups were identified to be positively correlated with the AGI activity. To sum up, an OPLS model was successfully developed as a rapid quality evaluation method to predict the AGI activity of T. scandens.
