      • Human Papillomavirus Genotypes among Females in Mexico: a Study from the Mexican Institute for Social Security

        Salcedo, Mauricio,Pina-Sanchez, Patricia,Vallejo-Ruiz, Veronica,Monroy-Garcia, Alberto,Aguilar-Lemarroy, Adriana,Cortes-Gutierrez, Elva I.,Santos-Lopez, Gerardo,Montoya-Fuentes, Hector,Grijalva, Renan Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.23

Background: The aetiological relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical cancer (CC) is widely accepted. Our goal was to determine the prevalence of HPV types in Mexican women attending at the Mexican Institute for Social Security from different areas of Mexico. Materials and Methods: DNAs from 2,956 cervical samples were subjected to HPV genotyping: 1,020 samples with normal cytology, 931 with low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LGSIL), 481 with high grade HGSIL and 524 CC. Results: Overall HPV prevalence was 67.1%. A total of 40 HPV types were found; HPV16 was detected in 39.4% of the HPV-positive samples followed by HPV18 at 7.5%, HPV31 at 7.1%, HPV59 at 4.9%, and HPV58 at 3.2%. HPV16 presented the highest prevalence both in women with altered or normal cytology and HPV 18 presented a minor prevalence as reported worldwide. The prevalence ratio (PR) was calculated for the HPV types. The analysis of PR showed that HPV16 presents the highest association with CC, HPV 31, -33, -45, -52 and -58 also demonstrating a high association. Conclusions: The most prevalent HPV types in cervical cancer samples were -16, -18, -31, but it is important to note that we obtained a minor prevalence of HPV18 as reported worldwide, and that HPV58 and -52 also were genotypes with an important prevalence in CC samples. Determination of HPV genotypes is very important in order to evaluate the impact of vaccine introduction and future cervical cancer prevention strategies.

      • Veterinary Education and the Requirements for Veterinary Practice in the Philippines: An Overview

Salcedo L. Eduardo 대한수의학회 2001 대한수의학회 학술대회발표집 Vol.2001 No.-

An overview of veterinary education and veterinary practice in the Philippines is herein presented. Veterinary Education is tenable at university level. Admission to university requires completion of six-year primary education and four-year secondary education and passing the university entrance examination. The veterinary curriculum consists of a two-year pre-veterinary curriculum and a four-year veterinary professional curriculum. Students in the pre-veterinary curriculum are required to complete 78 units of general education including fundamental science courses and 160 units of veterinary courses in the four year rofessional curriculum. Each unit is equivalent to one hour lecture or three hours laboratory. The first two years of the veterinary proper curriculum are concerned with basic and paraclinical courses while the last two years concentrate on medicine, surgery and clinical courses. The degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) is conferred by the university after passing all the courses specified in the curriculum including presentation and acceptance of an undergraduate thesis. An organizational set up of the College of Veterinary Medicine is given as an example. Admission policies| entrance, course, and graduation requirements| faculty and support staff are detailed. In order to ensure the quality of veterinary education, the Technical Panel for Agricultural Education (TPAE),Committee on Veterinary Education created in 1977 has set minimum standards for compliance of veterinary schools that offer the DVM program. The Committee is now under the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), the government agency that oversees tertiary education in the country. The University of the Philippines System has a trilogy of functions, instruction, research and extension. Thus, veterinary research is undertaken by the staff in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Multidisciplinary and collaborative research with other units/institutions within and outside the University is encouraged. The college has collaborative research tie ups with other institutions abroad. Research on the various areas of veterinary sciences is also undertaken in institutions other than academic. These include specialized government agencies (Bureau of Animal Industry, Department of Agriculture) and private research establishments. Funding for research is sourced from government funding institutions (Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Science and Technology (DOST), National Research Council of the Philippines (NRCP), Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) and other international funding agencies through the submission of research proposal. The veterinary profession, like other professions, is regulated in the Philippines by Republic Act No. 382,an act to regulate the practice of veterinary medicine and surgery in the Philippines and establishing at the same time the Board of Veterinary Medicine. License to practice is required and is obtained after passing a licensure examination and payment of the required fees. The provisions of the act spell out the requirements to practice in the Philippines. The examination is prepared and administered by the Board of Veterinary Medicine of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), the government agency that is concerned with the regulated professions in the country. The license is subject to renewal every three years. Proofs of having acquired continuing professional veterinary education (CPVE) credits are usually required in renewing the license. Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) and its sub-organizations are CPE providers.

ARE GALACTIC WARPS INDUCED BY INTERGALACTIC FLOWS?

SANCHEZ-SALCEDO F. J. The Korean Astronomical Society 2004 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.37 No.4

The interaction of disk galaxies with intergalactic winds has been invoked as a possible mechanism of the generation of galactic warps. Here we discuss conditions under which intergalactic flows can be relevant for warping field galaxies. Constraints include the heating of the outer disk, the level of asymmetry in the vertical distribution of the volume gas density, the angular frequency of the warp, the symmetry of galactic warps amplitude between the approaching and receding sides of the galaxy, and the speed of the intergalactic flow whether subsonic or supersonic. These constraints are discussed in this paper in reference to the proposal of Lopez-Corredoira et al. that warps can be a natural consequence of accretion flows onto the disk.

TURBULENCE IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE MILKY WAY

Sanchez-Salcedo, F.J.,Santillan, A.,Franco, Jose The Korean Astronomical Society 2007 Journal of The Korean Astronomical Society Vol.40 No.4

In external galaxies, the velocity dispersion of the atomic hydrogen gas shows a remarkably flat distribution with the galactocentric radius. This has been a long-standing puzzle because if the gas velocity dispersion is due to turbulence caused by supernova explosions, it should decline with radius. After a discussion on the role of spiral arms and ram pressure in driving interstellar turbulence in the outer parts of galactic disks, we argue that the constant bombardment by tiny high-velocity halo clouds can be a significant source of random motions in the outer disk gas. Recent observations of the flaring of H I in the Galaxy are difficult to explain if the dark halo is nearly spherical as the survival of the streams of tidal debris of Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy suggests. The radial enhancement of the gas velocity dispersion (at R > 25 kpc) due to accretion of cloudy gas might naturally explain the observed flaring in the Milky Way. Other motivations and implications of this scenario have been highlighted.

      • The photocatalytic disinfection capability of a solar simulator with self-rotating nanotubular TiO2 and reactor system on roof-harvested storage rainwater

        Dennis Espineli Salcedo,Gijung Pak,Jaekyung Yoon,Sungpyo Kim 한국방재학회 2015 한국방재학회 학술발표대회논문집 Vol.14 No.-

One of the best solutions for the deficiency of clean water, especially for developing countries, is rainwater disinfection. In the past decades a lot of studies have been made to develop photocatalytic processes using TiO2 determining the performance on their surface oriented photocatalysis. However, most of these researches failed to consider the economical aspect as well as the effectiveness on the disinfection to antibiotic resistance genes. On the other hand, due to the issues of climate change and increased impermeable layer in urban area, flooding prevention is the best solution in water management systems. To remedy these two problems, a roof-harvested rainwater storage system was designed. In addition, a breakthrough technique using a solar simulator with self-rotating TiO2 nanotubes, to apply a photocatalytic system in disinfecting storage rainwater harvested from roof, was established. Roof-harvested storage rainwater was analysed for TN, TP, SS and COD. Aside from these parameters, Escherichia coli (with multidrug resistant pB10 plasmid) was added to the sample. Samples were injected to the self-rotating TiO2 nanotube reactor system with exposure time of 0 to 360 min and 7 different setups. Results show that the developed system has increased disinfection properties compared to negative samples, though the presence of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

      • The dose response of biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance gene transfer to the different concentrations of antibiotics

Dennis Espineli Salcedo,Jung Hoon Lee(이정훈),Un Hwan Ha(하운환),Sungpyo Kim(김성표) 한국산학기술학회 2014 한국산학기술학회 학술대회 Vol.- No.-

The environment is endangered by the micro-contaminants that are left untreated found in the aquatic system due to human activities and inadequacy and inefficiency of waste water treatment facilities. This study investigated the effects of low levels of antibiotics to the biofilm formation resulting in enhanced Antibiotic Resistance Gene (ARG) transfer. The biofilm formations of Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, their combination, and their mixture with ppb levels of antibiotics were investigated. The effects on the conjugation of E. coli with P. aeruginosa in the biofilm structure were evaluated using biofilm assay in 96-well plates and ELISA. At 100 ppb to 1000 ppb of antibiotics, the mixed culture has the highest biofilm biomass and transconjugants, values greater than controls. This experiment shows that ppb levels of tetracycline can alter the transfer rate of pB10 plasmid at rates 2 to 5 times faster than without antibiotics in the biofilm, indicating the facilitated ARG spread by the presence of some microcontaminant residues in the environment.

Artemisia dracunculus Extracts Obtained by Organic Solvents and Supercritical CO2 Produce Cytotoxic and Antitumor Effects in Mice with L5178Y Lymphoma

        Martha Hilda Navarro-Salcedo,Jorge Ivan Delgado-Saucedo,Victor Hugo Siordia-Sanchez,Luis J. Gonzalez-Ortiz,Gustavo Adolfo Castillo-Herrera,Ana M. Puebla-Perez 한국식품영양과학회 2017 Journal of medicinal food Vol.20 No.11

We investigated the cytotoxic and antitumor effects of nine leaf extracts from Artemisia dracunculus (Tarragon). Five extracts were obtained using different organic solvents and four by supercritical CO2. The cytotoxic effects were expressed as IC50 in 100, 80, 80, 100, and 80 μg/mL by respective solvents: hexane, ethyl acetate, acetone, ethanol, and acetonitrile in L5178Y lymphoma cells. For supercritical CO2 extract A, IC50 was 100 μg/mL; for extracts C and D, IC50 was 150 μg/mL. The antitumor activity was assessed through a tumor growth inhibition test that measured ascites fluid volume and tumor cell counts of BALB/c mice (2 × 104 cells L5178Y i.p.). Twenty-four hours after inoculation, mice were treated with 100 mg/kg of acetonitrile extract or extract SF-A daily for 15 days in independent groups of five mice, using two administration routes. We observed tumor evolution with and without treatment. Without treatment, tumor evolution was 17,969 × 106 ± 5485 L5178Y cells in 2.6 mL ascites volume, whereas the orally treated acetonitrile extract group showed 0.1 × 106 ± 0.07 L5178Y cells (P < .05). The oral SF-A group showed 12.9 × 106 ± 243 L5178Y cells, and intraperitoneal (i.p.)-treated SF-A group showed 0.1 × 106 ± 0.05 L5178Y cells (P < .05) without any ascites volume development. The acetonitrile extract contains abundant polyphenols and possibly a flavone with antioxidant activity. The SF-A contains abundant alkamides. Both extracts are complexes and the identity of the compounds responsible for observed antitumor activity remains unknown.
