A CERTAIN PROPERTY OF POLYNOMIALS AND THE CI-STABILITY OF TANGENT BUNDLE OVER PROJECTIVE SPACES
Tanaka, Ryuichi Korean Mathematical Society 2007 대한수학회보 Vol.44 No.1
We determine the largest integer i such that $0<i{\leq}n$ and the coefficient of $t^{i}$ is odd in the polynomial $(1+t+t^{2}+{\cdots}+t^{n})^{n+1}$. We apply this to prove that the co-index of the tangent bundle over $FP^{n}$ is stable if $2^{r}{\leq}n<2^{r}+\frac{1}{3}(2^{r}-2)$ for some integer r.

A CW complex B is said to be I-trivial if there does not exist a Z2-map from Si-1 to S() for any vector bundle over B and any integer i with i > dim . In this paper, we consider the question of determining whether kRPn is I-trivial or not, and to this question we give complete answers when k ̸= 1, 3, 8 and partial answers when k = 1, 3, 8. A CW complex B is I-trivial if it is "W-trivial", that is, if for every vector bundle over B, all the Stiefel{Whitney classes vanish. We nd, as a result, that kRPn is a counterexample to the converse of this statement when k = 2, 4 or 8 and n ≥ 2k.

A CW complex B is said to be I-trivial if there does not exist a $\mathbb{Z}_2$-map from $S^{i-1}$ to S(${\alpha}$) for any vector bundle ${\alpha}$ over B a any integer i with i > dim ${\alpha}$. In this paper, we consider the question of determining whether $\Sigma^k\mathbb{R}P^n$ is I-trivial or not, and to this question we give complete answers when k $\neq$ 1, 3, 8 and partial answers when k = 1, 3, 8. A CW complex B is I-trivial if it is "W-trivial", that is, if for every vector bundle over B, all the Stiefel-Whitney classes vanish. We find, as a result, that $\Sigma^k\mathbb{R}P^n$ is a counterexample to the converse of th statement when k = 2, 4 or 8 and n $\geq$ 2k.

Background/Aims Upper gastrointestinal symptoms are more frequent and severe in female than in male outpatients in Japan. This study compared the upper gastrointestinal symptoms between healthy male and female young adult volunteers using a questionnaire. Methods In total, 581 third-grade medical students at Saga Medical School aged 22 to 30 years underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and completed a questionnaire (frequency scale for symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease) from 2007 to 2013. Of these 581 students, 298 who were negative for Helicobacter pylori infection and had no particular lesions on endoscopic examination were enrolled in the present evaluation. A symptom was defined as positive when the subject evaluated the frequency of the symptom as sometimes, often, or always. Results The subjects comprised of 163 males (average age, 23.7 years) and 135 females (average age, 23.1 years). Upper gastrointestinal symptoms were more frequent in the females (75 of 135, 55.6%) than males (69 of 163, 42.3%; P < 0.05), with a high score for 4 symptoms (bloated stomach, heavy feeling in the stomach after meals, subconscious rubbing of the chest with the hand, and feeling of fullness while eating meals). Of the 144 subjects (69 males and 75 females) who complained of these symptoms, the females complained of dysmotility symptoms more often than did the males, but this was not true for reflux symptoms. Conclusions This study suggests that females develop upper gastrointestinal symptoms more frequently than do males among the young healthy Japanese population. In this study, we establish a thin-layer chromatography (TLC) immunostaining method for detecting starfish gangliosides. A new monoclonal antibody (MAb) against AG-2, the major gangliosides molecular species of Acanthaster planci, was produced by fusing hybridoma with splenocytes immunized to liposomal AG-2. BALB/c male mice were injected with liposomal AG-2 antigen, and immunized. Their splenocytos were isolated and fused with hypoxanthine-aminopterine-thimidine (HAT)-sensitive mouse myeloma cells. Hybridomas producing MAb reactive to AG-2 were cloned using the limited dilution method. Established hybridomas were cultured in eRDF medium. Crude MAb produced from clone 8D4 was purified with a magnesium pyrophosphate column. Enzyme immunoassay and TLC immunostaining of AG-2 were performed using the purified MAb. Structurally related gangliosides did not cross-react with anti-AG-2 antibodies. The detection limit of TLC immunostaining was 50 ng of AG-2. The newly established immunostaining method was further developed for detecting AG-2 distribution and qualitative analysis in tissues and/or organs. Our results show that the majority of AG-2 is present in the stomach of male A. planci, while AG-2 is distributed not only in the stomach but also in the the pyloric caeca of female A. planci.
