Bilateral Trade Potential of IP Sensitive Products: A Comparative Study of India and China

Ruchi Sharma,Arushi Jain,Sidheswar Panda 아시아기술혁신학회 2022 Asian Journal of Innovation and Policy Vol.11 No.1

This study examines performances and varieties of export of IP sensitive products across emerging countries, namely, India and China by utilizing 6-digit disaggregated product-level export data. Further, this study constructs trade margins — extensive and intensive margins to understand trade potential and different trade patterns, specifically, exporters’ productivity, product diversification, and volume of trade during 2007-2016. This study finds India’s performance is comparable with China at the extensive margin though the gap between India and China is very wide in terms of the total value of exports and the intensive margin. China majorly exports more expensive electronics and manufacturing-related products as opposed to relatively cheaper medicinal and synthetic products, the total value of exports from China to the rest of the world is much higher than that of India. This study suggests that India is exporting IP-sensitive products to lower-income countries sufficiently, but the IP-sensitive exports to higher-income countries are still lagging.

Pharmacognostic Standardization of Turnera aphrodisiaca Ward

        Anupam Sharma,Suresh Kumar,Ruchi Taneja 한국식품영양과학회 2006 Journal of medicinal food Vol.9 No.2

Turnera aphrodisiacaWard (Turneraceae) has been used traditionally as an aphrodisiac, stimulant, nerve tonic, and laxative and in kidney, menstrual, and pregnancy disorders. Despite a long tradition of use in the treatment of various ail-ments, no systematic phytochemical and pharmacological work has ever been carried out on T. aphrodisiaca. The authorssuggest that the major stumbling block in systematic exploration of the plant is non-availability of authentic plant material. In the present investigation, various pharmacognostic standards for the plant have been generated so that authentic T. aphro-disiacacould be explored for its traditional claims. Microscopically, T. aphrodisiacaleaf showed the presence of abundantunicellular, warty, non-glandular trichomes, anomocytic stomata, and a large number of calcium oxalate crystals along theveins. Powdered stem of the plant showed lignified spiral and pitted tracheidal vessels, and pericyclic fibers were observedin powder microscopy of stem. Total ash of the aerial parts of T. aphrodisiacawas approximately eight and four times morethan acid-insoluble and water-soluble ash, respectively. The water-soluble extractive value of the plant was slightly higherthan its ethanol-soluble extractive value. Volatile oil content of T. aphrodisiacawas found to be 0.44% (wt/vol), the thin-layer chromatography of which exhibited seven spots using toluene:ethyl acetate (93:7 vol/vol) as mobile phase. Thin-layerchromatography of the petroleum ether extract showed nine spots using hexane:dichloromethane (1:1 vol/vol), while the chlo-roform extract showed 11 spots using toluene:ethyl acetate:glacial acetic acid (35:4:1 by volume). Phytochemically, the plantwas found to contain alkaloids, cyanogenic glycosides, steroids, saponins, flavonoids, tannins, carbohydrates, and proteins.

FDI and Innovation: An Investigation into Intraand Inter-industry Effects

Qayoom Khachoo,Ruchi Sharma 연세대학교 동서문제연구원 2016 Global economic review Vol.45 No.4

It is often believed that transfer of technology and know-how resulting from foreign direct investment (FDI) goes beyond the actual projects undertaken by foreign investors and, spills over to domestic firms affecting their knowledge base and productivity. This paper is an endeavour to investigate the existence of spillovers and their impact on the innovative performance of domestic firms active in the manufacturing sector of India. By employing data on FDI by industry and merging it with information on time-variant buyer–supplier linkages obtained from a series of national input–outputs tables, the study develops intra-industry and inter-industry measures to capture the effects of FDI on innovation performance of the incumbent firms’ active in the same sector as the MNC and in upstream and downstream sectors. The econometric analysis after accounting for endogeneity issues reveals that FDI has a moderate impact on innovative performance of firms residing in identical industries. However, impact on the innovative performance of firms in supplying sectors appears to be statistically strong.

Decentralization: An Analysis of Its Impact on Economic Growth and Democratic Governance in India and South Korea

        S. Sivakumar,Ruchi Sharma D 한국법제연구원 2023 KLRI journal of law and legislation Vol.13 No.2

Decentralization has been a significant trend in governance and economic development in many countries over the past few decades. It involves the transfer of decision-making power from central authorities to local governments, allowing for greater participation and involvement of citizens in the democratic process. In response to the demands of ethnic and national diversity, federalism required a unique and robust institutional design. Decentralization became an institutional design that catered for a distinct way of conceptualizing the sharing of powers. However, there is a lack of systematic research on the impact of decentralization on economic growth and democratic governance. The issue of local autonomy wherein the local governments can act independently requires answering multifaceted questions about whether decentralization will yield the desired results. The article explores the two imperative aspects of decentralization. It first explores the meaning and definition of decentralization and its desired objective. Both India and the Republic of Korea (ROK) provide insights into these questions and highlight the stages of democratization at various governance levels. While doing so, the variations in the extent and effectiveness of decentralization reforms in these two countries due to differences in their political, economic, and social contexts are kept in mind, as it seeks to explore the impact of decentralization in India and South Korea, two countries that have undergone significant decentralization reforms.
